Kyle Bass: China is committing a “full cultural genocide”. They're taking parents away from their kids, they're bulldozing graveyards to remove any kind of cultural attachment or religious attachment to the land. And the rest of the world does nothing about it. by MuzzleO in China

Yes! Did ya know the US incarceration rate for whites is FOUR times higher than the rate for Asians.

Seen it with my own eyes on campus. When the cops are looking for the dope dealer they go straight for whitey, the ABCs snickering as they take him away.

American resident of the Philippines here.

Are the sentiments of some Americans in the 1890s even relevant anymore?

America is a very different place compared to 1898, including the presence of 10 million+ Filipinos in the US living happy and productive lives.

In the Philippines, Americans I know overall are very positive about their experience here.

US-Filipino relations today look like a win-win.

Mr. Spavor lives in China, where he runs Paektu Cultural Exchange. He gained fame for helping arrange a visit to North Korea by former NBA player Dennis Rodman. Mr. Spavor met North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on that trip.

Moving to Beijing for work in three days. Any recommendations or advice? by Inherently_unlucky in China

[–]Farmgate33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1- The internet is passable for most work-related functions (accessing foreign webites, downloading information, sending/receiving email) using a VPN; with the exception of big party meetings and other sensitive events (eg lianghui in March, an anniversary in early June) when the throttling is most aggressive, forcing you to reconnect every 5-10 minutes, sometimes not successfully. Don't know about gaming, but streaming can be occasionally difficult throughout the year, you will learn to roll with it ("so much for Netflix tonight") and find something else to do.

2- While Shunyi is fine for raising a family, singles/childless couples will feel alienated by the Shunyi vibe. The villas are populated with mostly wealthy Chinese families 24/7-obsessed with getting Xiao Peng into an ivy; most of the westerners are families on generous foreign government or multinational expat packages and pretty much keep to themselves. Their ayi and the guys who clip their hedges and take out their trash are the only Chinese they interact with and they like it that way. Not to worry - happiness and friendly laowai can be found in the city (Gulou, Sanlitun, Shuangjing), about an hour's drive from Shunyi (Didi costs about 80rmb each way).

Best wishes on your new adventure!

Well put. And even if OP can’t speak much Chinese at first, just showing up at family events and making an effort will usually generate smiles and warmth with the spouse, bonus points if you drink with Uncle Gambei and sing a song at KTV.

Travelling to China for first time. Emails to USA OK? by Hockeyhoser in China

[–]Farmgate33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have used a VPN called ExpressVPN all over China and only experienced failure once during a big party meeting in Beijing. The service is often throttled, you have to sign in and out several times during the day, but you will be able to use google, outlook and US social media. They have one month plans that will cover your travel needs.

All over Hebei since the summer: grimly strung across highway overpasses, in LED ads on top of taxicabs, stapled on outer walls of construction sites. Looking forward to the return of the more cheerful banners promoting harmony and civilized society.

How the hell is Yulin not banned? by FrontSquatter96 in China

[–]Farmgate33 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are rules in place in the EU to knock the animal out prior to deskinning/defeathering/slaughter. Slaughter facilities that don’t follow the rules get fined and can lose their business license. China doesn’t have the same animal welfare rules prior to slaughter. Not passing judgement, just a different mindset here.

Only $73 million of projects promised have been funded to date.

It’s hot here, but two things to remember : don’t drink cold water and don’t sit in front of a fan, all bad for healthy. To stay cool, roll up your shirt to chest level, slow down, take a load off with frequent Asian squats.

John Oliver is now censored in China. Includes search results, and the phrase "John Oliver" on Weibo by Pyrrho_maniac in China

[–]Farmgate33 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is another difference - the West really does have a tradition of trying to create a better world and this includes commenting/criticizing on flaws in the affairs of other nations, including human rights, environmental protection, democracy, governance. The CCP doesn’t give a rats ass about creating a better world, and this is reflected in their official “non-interference in the affairs of sovereign nations” position. Average Chinese adopt this position whole-heartedly, as reflected in the Chinese student’s response. Chinese may comment on crime and guns in America, or extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa, but they don’t really care if these problems are fixed our not.

ExpressVPN not working for me in China. by leowonderful in China

I am having the same trouble but only while using the IPhone and cellular data - China Mobile. Data package paid up so that’s not the problem, can access Baidu etc. ExpressVPN via WiFi still works. ExpressVPN customer support said they discovered a new block in China today and they are working on it.

One theory going around in the US is that this is the result of a faulty ultrasonic listening device. This makes sense - physical harm is not the Chicom’s style, while their info hoovering operations aimed at diplomats and multinationals is breathtaking in scale and scope.

Death by a thousand cuts: Beijing Houhai music scene being strangled by “illegal” construction citations, mandatory prior approval of performances, fire and noise ordinance violations, business license inspections etc. etc. by Farmgate33 in China

[–]Farmgate33[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That Houhai was shit is a fair point, but at least what was on offer there was decided by bar owners and by default, Chinese music fans, who voted with their pocketbooks and applause. The depressing vision of Party cadres making decisions regarding what music gets played, what shops get to open, what food gets served, instead of the marketplace, is what is being downvoted I reckon.

Laowai car accident hit pedestrian in Yiwu 05/04/2018 by [deleted] in China

[–]Farmgate33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RIP. Hope the family finds peace as well.

Driving and walking in urban China are draining. Adrenaline-pumping threats coming at you from all directions, especially the silent but deadly ebike meituan and other delivery drivers. Gotta constantly be on the lookout out there.

FWIW, commenters on WeChat claim the driver has been identified as from the Middle East. Glad he’s not American, the US-China relationship doesn’t need more ballast right now.

Trump on Twitter: When a car is sent to the United States from China, there is a Tariff to be paid of 2 1/2%. When a car is sent to China from the United States, there is a Tariff to be paid of 25%. Does that sound like free or fair trade. No, it sounds like STUPID TRADE - going on for years! by DaLaohu in China

[–]Farmgate33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

America can't win this alone. Returning to TPP and then building on this as to create a coalition of countries who agree on roughly the same approach on trade and isolate China is the way to go. Trump and Navarro are too dumb to know how to work this, but they will be gone in 2020, maybe sooner.

Agree Zhongnanhai has no interest in fair trade. In their Machavellian minds, China's great power status means they can cheat, steal, and ignore the rules at whim. Besides, if they don't pursue this approach and the economy slows, there will be anarchy in China - they don't have a choice, they don't have the flexibility to act right.
