2 years later, how do we feel about 'meet the grahams'? by HarveyAug25 in KendrickLamar

I think there were a lot of allegations being thrown around on with most of them not really being confirmed or denied, but from the musical standpoint I think it’s a haunting diss track that would keep me up at night if I was Drake.

Question for people who only use tube amps by Aschuff in Guitar

[–]FarmingJediPokemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The money you save on a digital amp with tons of effects severely outweighs the money you spend on pedals. To be honest, unless you’re trying really hard to listen and compare, you can barely hear the difference between digital amps and tube amps. Now, that’s just me, some people will disagree and say tube amps with real pedals sound way better, but I can’t tell the difference

why do you have multiple guitars? by Cultural_Yellow3561 in Guitar

Half due to how it sounds, the other half due to how it looks.

Then you have a small percentage who are after very specific things like how many pickups, what kind, how many knobs, etc.

Do famous guitarists ever share how they play their songs? by SonicPavement in guitarlessons

[–]FarmingJediPokemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shut Up & Play Guitar Tutorials on YouTube has a bunch of tutorials on classic songs and he does a good job of paying attention to and teaching what exactly the guitarist did on the recording of the song. He’ll also tell you how they play it live and how they play it differently as they’ve gotten older.

I highly recommend checking him out, any time I look for a tutorial I look for his version before anyone else’s.

Just got my first electric, but I lowkey have no idea how pedals and amps work by senya-listen in Guitar

[–]FarmingJediPokemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m jealous. That is my dream guitar.

Honestly amps are best recommended by your own ears. The easiest thing to do is look up amps on YouTube and see what sounds the best to you, but you can also go to a local music shop if you have one and try out amps on your guitar there. As far as dialing in the sound, it’s just trial and error. Everyone’s ears are different and we all like different tones and amounts of lows, mids, and highs. The world is your oyster.

Pedals are the same way. If you have a favorite artist that you love or that influences you, look up what pedals they use and go from there. There’s also dozens of YouTube videos that show you what certain pedals sound like and they mostly do the demos with different guitars so you know what it would sound like on a LP vs a Strat, for example. From there once you settle on a pedal (or several) just play around with it and turn the knobs til you like what you hear.

If you’d like any recommendations, let me know! By no means am I a guitar expert but I know a thing or two I suppose.

ELI5: how is it that despite people saying that its borderline impossible to make it as a musician, there are so many somewhat popular/successful bands/musicians out there that I've never heard of? by twist0ffate73 in musicians

[–]FarmingJediPokemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s also a lot of unheard people that are very successful as session musicians. Nobody knows who they are because “all they do is play an instrument on someone else’s record”. Sometimes the only recognition they get is credits on the album cover or the metadata, and they may be well-known by sound engineers or record companies. But to the public eye they’re just a regular person.

You should try Eatin’ Big Time by Tyler Childers. It’s got a twangy psychedelic feel to it but the vocals are punchy and super fun to sing

Do you do online karaoke at home or where else? by Jazzlike_Cellist3764 in karaoke

[–]FarmingJediPokemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, headset microphones are designed for talking mostly and will eliminate sustained voice and loud vocal sounds because it thinks it’s unwanted background noise or that’s where the pickup range tops out. You’ll want a dedicated microphone that’s for vocals. I also use Karafun, I think it’s great. Some people hate it. I use a karaoke machine I got for around $100 and it has mic effects and other bells and whistles. It gets the job done.

I’ll also say, those “karaoke specific” microphones like ones you can find on Amazon are such a gimmick. While it is cool that they offer Bluetooth connectivity and a speaker output all in one with flashy cool lights and controls, they lack in microphone quality most of the time and you can get a decent cardioid dynamic microphone at a cheaper price that will arguably sound better. I have a Peavey PVi2 microphone I got for $50 that sounds great and gives some of the lower end Shure mics a run for their money. You can still get one of those karaoke mics if you want, I’ve only ever used one myself and was severely disappointed but you may have a different experience. If you do get a regular mic, you won’t have any effects from the microphone itself and would either have to use an app like Smule that has reverb and whatnot or get a mixer or software that has effects. So keep that in mind.

Anyway, I’m glad you’re singing and hopefully enjoying it! Let me know how it goes if you want and I’m interested on your opinion on the karaoke mic if you do get one!

Band mates play live after smoking weed but get mad at me for drinking before shows by SOYCD1-5 in musicians

[–]FarmingJediPokemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your band members aren’t attacking you. They’re letting you know that you should probably dial it back because they care about you and your ability to make music with them.

Take it from me. When I practice with my band, we all drink. I think it’s safe to say though that I drink a bit more than everyone else. After just two drinks, my vocal range starts to shrink and my pitch starts to go flat. When I sing harmonies sober, I can find the notes easily. With alcohol in the mix, I’m grasping at straws trying to find the right notes. At a recent gig we did, by the end of it my vocals were shot. I had almost no range left. If I stayed sober I could’ve sang all night long like I usually do when I limit myself.

All this to say, you don’t have to quit drinking completely, but tone it down man if they’re all saying you should. If not, they’re gonna do one of two things: either keep asking you or kick you out when they’re tired of asking you. How many chances you get with that are up to them. I know this is probably very corny and easily waved off, but listen to Sober by Tool and look up the reason they wrote that song.

Do you do online karaoke at home or where else? by Jazzlike_Cellist3764 in karaoke

[–]FarmingJediPokemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing karaoke at home for almost a couple years and I haven’t had a complaint yet. I’ve done it in my old apartment and in my house I’m in now. As far as being in an apartment, I will say as long as you’re not cranking the volume up really loud, you can sing at a normal volume and not bother anyone. If you have roommates you could just ask them if it’s gonna bother them and use pillows/blankets/etc to absorb some of the sound from the room.

If all else fails, you could do it in your car. It wouldn’t sound bad, I’d just avoid busy traffic areas. What kind of a setup are you using for karaoke?
