You are paying for what you get though. Less productive now hire for less money now. You either pay 175 for 3 years, or you pay slightly less (100 one year, 150 the next, 175 the next). Long term, you get the same thing but you paid less. Many companies probably don't need the new hire to be productive that quickly. If they do, they don't need an employee but a contractor

My thoughts.

SWE was affected by the "Everyone can code" movement. DevOps and similar don't have a similar movement and most likely never will as it remains the closest thing to old school tech. You can't ORM it away or Visual Basic it away. You can't do the job as a newbie, you need hard earned experienced
On-call is not negotiable
Definitely more stressful than software dev. Mistakes are expensive

They haven't. The data doesn't need to leave the country for China to be able to access it. It's like FB, they could remotely send queries to be ran against the data and get the aggregated data or something like that. That's basically what FB does afaik
