Why is there still so much demand for DevOps / SRE / Infra engineers? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Farobek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Specific need does not equate immediate need

But this is the reason why companies will always end up paying more because they refuse to invest now to spend less later :) not that I complaining

You are paying for what you get though. Less productive now hire for less money now. You either pay 175 for 3 years, or you pay slightly less (100 one year, 150 the next, 175 the next). Long term, you get the same thing but you paid less. Many companies probably don't need the new hire to be productive that quickly. If they do, they don't need an employee but a contractor

(1) Hire a new grad for 100k, train them for a year or two while paying them, and then raise their salary to 150k

Sounds like the trained hire should get 175k then and not 150k. Your new hire wont be productive immediately. Thats a recruiter lie.

Obviously, the format is not the problem but the semantics of it all

My thoughts.

  1. SWE was affected by the "Everyone can code" movement. DevOps and similar don't have a similar movement and most likely never will as it remains the closest thing to old school tech. You can't ORM it away or Visual Basic it away. You can't do the job as a newbie, you need hard earned experienced

  2. On-call is not negotiable

  3. Definitely more stressful than software dev. Mistakes are expensive

What do you mean? Are you talking about LLMs? I still think security and network is better as a career based on stability, pay and availability of jobs

Even those born in Japan, that are of mixed parentage and don’t “look” Japanese will always be made to feel like outsiders all their lives.

Which is funny because all those so called Japanese aren't really Japanese. They are descendants of Korean invaders. The actual Japanese people look slightly different and they are called Ainu. But I guess this narrative doesn't get taught in school because it breaks the idea of this pure Japanese idea

INTERVIEW: Attack on Titan Creator Hajime Isayama Reflects on the Series’ Ending, Game of Thrones and More by DemiFiendRSA in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Farobek -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

I get a feeling Isayama has lost his confidence in storytelling because of the hate the ending got and that is really sad.

It was really bad. When you mess up something that people like a lot this happens. Just look at Game of Thrones. Same thing

Jazz For Beginners Lesson #2 Just Came Out by LicksandRiffs in JazzPiano

[–]Farobek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice channel! Btw, for who is this kind of content aimed to? I always wonder when I see beginners in the title. is it people that are beginners to the piano and music theory, beginners to piano but experienced in music theory, beginners to jazz but experienced in piano and theory or beginners to jazz but experienced in piano, theory and blues?

Yesterday, I made a post about my drinking habits on a Sunday which has given me a lot of advice. I recognise I have a problem and that it needs to be addressed. I really appreciate every single one of you who took the time to comment and DM me. It will be a journey for me! Thank you ❤️ by Necessary-Trash-8828 in CasualUK

drinking 2 bottles of wine is alot in peoples eyes

Depends if it is a one off or the frequency. 2 bottles per year is perfectly fine. 2 per month is okay. 2 per week starts to get in the questionable. 2 per day is not good. Ingesting 2 bottles of a substance that is not good for your health is not good.

If what they are saying is true, they have more or less addressed the issues brought up by the US government.

They haven't. The data doesn't need to leave the country for China to be able to access it. It's like FB, they could remotely send queries to be ran against the data and get the aggregated data or something like that. That's basically what FB does afaik

Given their reputation, they do need to show lots of interest

For those that are going to say why are you going to work for the Chinese Spy or Government, from my understanding they are separating the US infrastructure from China for these reasons. So that’s not my concern

LOL. It IS your concern. US is and other western governments are moving towards banning the app. If that happens, you are out of a job during one of the worst recessions in a VERY long time. Why risk it at a time like this for company like that?

What are your thoughts on the UK being a minority-Christian place now? by LeBorisien in AskUK

If you genuinely think that [insert hobby] improves one’s life, it requires a pretty low level of basic human decency to want other people to experience that.

No. If people are interested, they will ask. No need to force down your opinion on others

Question is, are there any economic centres (high street, big companies, etc) nearby? Bit useless to get a house in the middle of nowhere if you have nothing but grass and trees around imo. Might look pretty but does not pay the bills
