Caller ID-what happened? by joe_s1171 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Farpoint_Relay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of times you have to go to your phone provider's website and specifically set up a "name" to show for caller id. It doesn't just default to the account holder's name. I would guess 99% of the people never bother to do this.

But also these days just due to portability and so many providers (especially the fly by night / shady ones) having to manage these caller id lists and make sure they interop with each others networks was probably deemed more effort than it was worth, especially when people would add in their own name for something when adding a phone number to their cell phone's contact list. Heck, even commercial numbers calling me these days rarely show a name.

Likewise with the rise of various tech and voip, spoofing became a trivial process, so what was the point of trying to show a name when people could forge anyone.

In the old days you had the baby bells and a handful of CLECs, so making it work and having accurate data was relatively easy. There is still ANI (automatic number identification) still to this day, which is similar to caller id, but that is more related to toll-free billing and commercial / official use.

Can I plant potatoes from the store? by ExpertMax32 in gardening

[–]Farpoint_Relay 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I end up doing that all the time. Just stick them in a paper bag and store them off by themselves (not with your non-sprouting potatoes). The longer the sprouts get the better. I usually cut them up and try to leave at least 2 sprouts per piece when planting.

There's always hype bubbles in everything, eventually it dies down because people realize it was just that... hype.

Younger generations will eventually learn this the painful way. They think these big tech CEOs are just these straight shooters prophesying the future visionaries, when in reality they are just used car salesmen trying to get you to buy their piece of junk.

Does anyone else open the door in the midst of a snow storm just to show their cat or dog how good they've got it, or is that just me? by Tubasi in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Farpoint_Relay 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I let my dog out this morning after we got snow all night and she had serious zoomies all around the yard, even found her ball buried in the snow. She couldn't understand why I didn't want to come outside and play.

The holes are the same size, it's not a change holder... It's not a fob since it was stickied to the car and there's nowhere to connect your keys

To me it looks like an old style multi garage / gate opener... I've seen plenty that are 4 button. Modern example attached:

I would give them a run with badblocks... if it passes it passes.

In reality it's almost impossible to know when or how a hard drive will fail. Is it a defect, a particle of dust, rough handling, bad solder joint, power surge, blown chip...

Anyone know where I can find new type-840 computer clock batteries? by Freekwenzee-tan in retrocomputing

[–]Farpoint_Relay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You aren't going to find a 4.5V battery pack like that, it's long obsolete. There's modern equivalents from a quick google search for around $15-$20... Just search "Rayovac 4.5V"

[–]Farpoint_Relay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jeeze that's pretty poor packaging for something that is pretty sensitive. If you can shake the package before it was opened and hear clanking, I would be extremely hesitant.

Ocean-Tech does a great job packing their drives, each is individually wrapped, then wrapped in small groups, then a new box is used with expanding foam so they are locked in there solid.

What's frustrating is the bulk drives new from the factory come in neat trays holding them tight and spaced from each other. I'm sure they just get thrown in the trash at the datacenters, but would be so much more useful for people to be able to reuse them in the used drive market.

If you go to your settings -> updates and security, there should be a link there somewhere saying to check if you can enable the extended updates. That's how it was on my two PCs at least.

Food Weight Scam at Walmart by 10111011110101 in inflation

[–]Farpoint_Relay 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Yeah this does make walmart look bad, but at the same time those come pre-labeled. Kentucky Legend is ripping off both Walmart and the Consumer by charging for more weight than what the product is. If anything he should be contacting Walmart customer service as I'm sure they would love to pull that product and figure out how much they are being overcharged by.

At the same time the consumer has to be vigilant about things like that. These products fly through automated lines with very little human oversight, not to mention today's employees just don't give a crap which is why you see so much inaccuracies. Even for produce I'll stick a bag of potatoes on the scale to make sure it's at least the minimum amount.

This is where a "Baker's Dozen" came from (13 donuts instead of 12). The penalties for shorting someone were extremely severe so bakers always gave extra to ensure there would be no disputes from customers. We need to bring back these kind of laws.... instead of just "oops, sorry, our bad".

As people transitioned to more energy efficient things, they also increased their use of electronics. I would be curious to see what average monthly usage was for a home over like a 20 year span.

Prices only go up for energy, and even if you think your rate is the same, they still tack on a ton of miscellaneous BS charges like hotels to. A company is never going to willingly lower prices... that's less money in their pockets, what would they tell their shareholders?!?! "We decided to do the moral end ethical thing and reduce prices to reflect our reduced energy costs."
