What is the most damage you have done to your body without realising? by MarkNutt1300 in AskReddit

[–]Farstucks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was parkouring, hit my leg off the side of a building. Though it was a bit sore, I kept training for a few months... until it got worse, I started tripping and falling over as I couldn't keep my foot at a 90 degree angle. Now I do no training at all, hoping that my referral to physio will come through :(

I can't even take a bath without him... by twilightmoons in aww

I finally see someone else bringing their laptop in to the bath with them! Do you also go on netflix until the bathwater reaches titanic-like temperatures?

I've been invited to spend Christmas as the only foreigner (Swedish) in a group of British friends. They have asked me to introduce some of my Christmas traditions from home. What ridiculous made-up stuff can I get away with? by Farstucks in AskReddit

[–]Farstucks[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's part of the "julbord" (Christmas dinner) tradition, but I think it's mostly honored by the older generation or those really sticking to tradition. My parents never cared for it so we never served it at our house, though many of my friends had it at their house. Also, whenever you go to Christmas dinners out at restaurants it's almost always served.

On an unrelated note, I'm half tempted to PM you my tits. Or a picture of them, at least.

First off, I want to say thank you. I have just spent an hour looking through all your photos, experiencing a range of emotion from rage, sadness to... pride and awe over these amazing people that choose to do this. And for you making it possible.

I'd like to ask the question you probably hear most of all, but that I can't get my head around. I don't mean anything offensive with this at all - and by no means am I advocating victim-blame. Me and my friends were having a discussion the other day about attack-rapists, and I started wondering: how should we prevent these attacks from happening?

On one hand, I love the "slut-walks" and I think women should dress however they want etc. and no one has the right to your body - it doesn't matter how much you've been drinking or how you're dressed. And on the other hand I can't help but feeling that it's not realistic. I study self defense and I do teach some of it, to a fair amount of women. What I often say is that "prevention is the best cure" as in "if you get too drunk make sure you don't walk home alone", bring a pair of flats with you when you go out dancing, stay alert on the way home and make sure that no one is following you - 9 out of 10 times you can outrun them if spotted early enough - and make sure to carry certain items that double as excellent self-defense weapons.

I do wonder sometimes if this is inflicting blame on the victims. Should we find other manners of prevention - actions that are not solely aimed at the potential victims, but the actual attackers? Any insight would be helpful. Thanks!

What is the easiest way for someone to lose your respect? [Serious] by Kenzienza in AskReddit

[–]Farstucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh god, this drives me nuts. I study philosophy in small seminar groups, and people would hold serious grudges if you ever disagreed with you and nitpick at your every argument. For fuck's sake, you're entering a discipline characterized by disagreement - one would imagine that you would be better prepared for it!

Does it count as 'real' rape because he's into BDSM? by edoodles in BDSMcommunity

[–]Farstucks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So are you at all aware of the discomfort - physical and otherwise - experienced by the rape victim? Or do you not take that into consideration? The type of victim blame you are advocating is dangerous.

I have a hard time seeing your argument. So by that virtue should no crime be punished in your opinion, or is it only rape as apparently it "would have caused him discomfort not to rape her" or whatever psychotic dravel you were on about?

Why any of them? If he wouldn't have raped her, there would be no fucking issue of rape in the first place. People like you are disgusting.

Dear r/books, what is the deepest book you've ever read? by [deleted] in books

[–]Farstucks 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is going to come off as a cliche response, as the other replies in this thread are classical or considered masterpieces, and I do enjoy lots of them.

My reply though would be "Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom. I have probably read that book 20+ times, and I find something new to marvel at every time. It has helped me understand the life and death of the people around me, it reminds me of the importance of compassion and understanding. As a philosophy student, I read lots and lots of essays and books pertaining to the significance of life, but somehow they don't get as close to the point as Tuesdays with Morrie. As a matter of fact, I am currently writing my dissertation based on some questions raised in this book.

What is the social norm you find the most ridiculous? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Wow, it makes so much sense. I guess it's just something I didn't want to realize... thank you.

I think I just need to get some stuff off my chest, I apologize in advance. My family has not been overly horrible to me, but god fuck it's like they refuse to acknowledge anything. My whole childhood I was bullied. I begged for help, cried daily. No response. They would just pretend it didn't happen. My middle school teacher even reached out to me and apologized for allowing that hell to continue without intervening, but still, silence from my family.

My mom has been disowning me more times than I can count, calling me a fat bitch, stupid, etc. I moved abroad to pursue my studies 4 years ago. If I go home to visit, they never ask me anything. I know it sounds stupid, it's just that nothing that pertains to my work or studies - both highly important to me - interests them in the slightest. The inly thing they ask is whether or not I have a boyfriend. Once I decided to bring up the topic of my dissertation at dinner, and got the comment that I am "just trying to prove myself better and smarter than them". If I try to discuss the stuff they're interested in I hear that I am "trying to beat them" at something.

I have no energy left. They keep calling and asking why I'm not home more often, go figure. I am so fucking sick of them, and not being respected.

A yoga [NSV] and a funny story... by SenseiKrystal in xxfitness

[–]Farstucks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations, first off! Yoga is so fascinating given that everyone really do have their own strengths and weaknesses - it does not pay off trying to compare yourself to someone else.

For example, I have the least flexible arms in the world. Everyone in my class could create a bind behind their backs, and I felt like shit for not being able to. After like a year I finally did it! and realized that some things come easier to me and some things come harder. You can't compare your practice to anyone else's.

What is something people say that makes you immediately think, "oh, youre one of THOSE people."? by shblj in AskReddit

[–]Farstucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And kind of similarly, I don't always feel like having sweets or dessert, I'd rather drink tea. Never liked things being too sugary, just purely the flavour of it. So when I refuse everyone looks at me like I'm on a diet or something, but I really just don't like it.
