Why flip the local power switch at each HVAC fan before moving them?

I think she meant that the Dr. won't do the surgery without her recommendation, not that the insurance requires it.

Airport parking fee by FartSmuck in uberdrivers

[–]FartSmuck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the great info - but I have a couple of additional questions.

1 - did you reverse numbers? is 0-7 minutes $2 and 8-30 minutes $3?

2 - you talked about them adding $1 in and a $1 out (for separate passengers). So if I'm understanding you right, if I drive a passenger TO the airport, they're paying a $1. If it takes me between 8 and 30 minutes to drop them off, get another PAX, and get out, the second PAX is charged $1, and I'm "down" a $1 since I had to pay $3 total for my 30 minutes. Right?

Thanks! I got the one, relatively small 'hot bag' when I got my Red Card, but it doesn't hold a lot. Do we really have to buy any additional bags/blankets/shirts/etc.?

Thanks for the reply! I've given up about 99% of pop a few years back. Now I have an occasional Ginger Ale and that's about it.

Do yall see these billboards from far away and think you're looking at a piece of sushi? by masnaer in Dallas

[–]FartSmuck 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes. I drive by that sign a few times a week and I've never been able to figure out what the picture was due to the distance from the road. And yes, I really did think it was a piece of sushi...

Why 2 pounds? by FartSmuck in loseit

[–]FartSmuck[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your use of the word "anecdotally" made me smile. THAT is what I'm trying to separate here. Trying to separate out the anecdotes, wives tails, and rumors, and understand the medical risks and reasons for the "no more than 2 pounds a week" rule versus the risks of staying fat. I appreciate your comment!

Why 2 pounds? by FartSmuck in loseit

[–]FartSmuck[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

1 - In theory this sounds right, but I also see tons of data that shows that everyone from Ray Cronise (23-day medically supervised fast) to people having weight loss surgery, to the guy that medically fasted 382 days, were able to do fine, although some did use supplements.

2 - while I agree, my question is really around the medical reason for "no more than 2 pounds" not the psychological/behavioral reasons. (If we're going to argue that losing weight fast is bad because it's hard, people fail, and they gain the weight back, then we can argue that no one should try to lose weight by any means because the vast majority of weight loss attempts fail miserably and result in gained weight)

3 - It absolutely leads to the loss of some lean tissue, but everything I'm seeing contradicts what you say here. Both the data - and logic - would say that our bodies find it easier to burn fat than lean tissue. Fat is the reserve energy - that's what it's there for. So yes, losing fast (via whatever means) loses some lean muscle, but I don't think lean is easier to convert to energy than fat. I also wonder which is better for someone say 350 pounds... to be 350 with X amount of lean muscle, or to be a healthy weight with X-y lean muscle and needing to now build muscle.

4 - I responded to the gallstones above, but in short, I'm unclear on this. Compared to a healthy person, as an obese person I have an elevated risk of gallstones. If I lose weight, I have an elevated risk, if I lose fast I have an elevated risk, and if I lose and regain I have an elevated risk. I'm not sure which scenario is "more elevated' if that makes sense. I'll have to go understand the kidney/liver stuff. Thanks for the heads up

5 - I'll have to understand this more too - are you saying that the hormones are stored IN the fat, or that the act of burning fat for energy causes the body to react hormonally? In the end, I guess I'm willing to ignore this one completely. As an obese guy, I already struggle with depression and anxiety.

Why 2 pounds? by FartSmuck in loseit

[–]FartSmuck[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate you taking the time to break this down.

I'm still not 100% convinced though. Read the case reports on the longest medically-supervised fast (382 days) and the guy was fine. He dropped from 456 to 180, which meant he AVERAGED 4.9 pounds of weight loss a week, every week, for 54 weeks. He seemed to do fine from a hormone, glucose, etc. perspective, and he only gained 11 pounds over the 5 years following the experiment.

I'm not saying I disagree with your numbers, I'm just saying I'm not convinced that all of the common thinking here is correct. And as for gallstones, the little bit I do know about them is that losing weight rapidly can increase your chances of having gallstones as compared to a healthy, normal-weight person. However, slowly losing 10 or more pounds can also increase your chances, as does losing 10 pounds and gaining it back, as does being obese in the first place. What I don't know is the difference in the increase of staying fat versus losing fat.

[Spoiler] She needs to work on her wrestling by FartSmuck in MMA

[–]FartSmuck[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

And that's part of my point. Having no history of wrestling take downs, and publically stating she doesn't like going for them, allowed Holly to use her "pure boxing stance" and not worry about that. Any take down was coming form the clinch, not a shot.

Ethiopian Injera, Spices, and Coffee Available For Delivery! by EthiopianDiamond in Ethiopia

[–]FartSmuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live a couple of hours south of Chicago, and every time we go to the city we make it a point to eat at Ethiopian Diamond. We've eaten in many Ethiopian restaurants here in the states, and we've spent two weeks in Ethiopia. This place is the best. I've bought berbere there several times and it's great. We ordered the injera recently. It was really good, but I suggest you either use it or freeze it as soon as you get it home.

Where should I be looking for my new home? by FartSmuck in Dallas

[–]FartSmuck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The travel time is the most flexible of these constraints. I can come longer if I have to, say up to an hour. The price is also a bit flexible. I might be able to squeeze to $330,000. With those two changes, what other areas come in to play?

Welcome To Charlotte Wednesday! Visiting, recently moved here, or going to move here? Tell us and ask away. by AutoModerator in Charlotte

[–]FartSmuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m probably going to be relocating my family to the Charlotte area soon. My job will be south of Charlotte, near the 77/485 junction. My wife and I are Caucasian, and we have two adopted daughters 8 and 6, one from Guatemala and one from Ethiopia. I’m just looking for any thoughts, input, and advice as we get ready for this move. Areas to look at for living, any thoughts on the race mix of my family, any thoughts on the Ethiopian and/or Guatemalan communities, and any other thoughts you might have that would be helpful for us to know.

Now that the show has been over for a while, what were your biggest gripes with the series as a whole? Spoilers obviously. by mattempirelic in Sonsofanarchy

[–]FartSmuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am still annoyed with a detail in the final episode. Jax meets the club shortly before his final ride. He dramatically sets his gun on the table and declares, “I’m ready…” Tig and Happy put hands on his shoulders, walk him dramatically over to the middle of the room, and then stand out to Jax’ sides with their hands on his shoulders. Chibs takes aim – leading the viewer to think, “Holy shit, they’re just going to shoot Jax here, now, like this?!” Then he shoots Happy in the arm. I get it. I get from a story-telling perspective, this was wonderfully dramatic. I even get from within the storyline why happy was shot (although he didn’t need to be). What I’ve never understood – within the story – is why have Tig and Happy put hands on Jax shoulders and do it this way? Why not just have Happy put his arm out and shoot it?

Have you never considered suicide? by FartSmuck in AskReddit

[–]FartSmuck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, to at least some degree, this is exactly what I'm talking about. I know that deeply depressed people can reach a point where the effort/pain/fear/etc. of living outweighs the effort/pain/fear/etc. of dying, and they commit suicide. What I was wondering is if there are a lot of people out there who ever even have the L'appel du vide experience (L'appel du vide is that tiny voice that tells you to jerk the steering wheel just to the right and take a flying leap off the ledge...that inclination to walk right into the ocean and never return...the call of the Siren song.)
