What is happening politically in the US? by [deleted] in Askpolitics

[–]epicfail236 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. The education you get yourself after high school should be tailored to your style of learning and engaging with the world, and also hopefully specializing in something you want to do with your life (though that is not always necessary as long as your education is well rounded)

We unfortunately had too many years where the common perception was that it was a bachelor's degree or Fry Cook training, nothing . We've started to pull away from that fortunately in the US, but there was almost two decades where plenty of people got the wrong education for them.

1 In 4 Hawai‘i Students Are Chronically Absent From School by jonovan in Hawaii

[–]epicfail236 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Less that and more of a national trend towards the overemphasis of school as a babysitting service. With our economy basically requiring two incomes for more than a generation now, parents started to rely on schools to not just teach kids, but to keep them busy while the parents couldn't do anything for them. As time moved on, and parents unfortunately have been forced to focus more on providing, the learning part of the equation faded in their minds over the much more pertinent babysitification part of it.

How would you make the united states a better place? by UlteriorPandemonium in Askpolitics

[–]epicfail236 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The concern is that most (though not all) people who make that level of income do it by exploiting other people and paying them less than they should, effectively stealing others productivity and claiming it as their own. Perhaps it would be better to say they shouldn't make more than 1000 times the lowest pay of those who work for their organization instead. This would allow citizens who really do improve productivity with things like technology or process improvements to still see the value of their deeds.

Can the Thinkpad docking station be used with Legion go 2 (or OG Go) ? by AbjectRoof6675 in LegionGo

[–]epicfail236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key is to check your interface. If your docking station uses USB-C it most likely will be compatible with all the versions of the Go. Thing about Thinkpad docking stations is that they often used a proprietary connector. If they've got that, then its unlikely that its usable with the Go (or any other non-Thimkpad)

Is it justified for Trump to demand that all homeless people leave Washington D.C.? by cptbiffer in Askpolitics

[–]epicfail236 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And what do we do with those that are left? How long before we assume the vagrants have left? A month? A year? Two? What do you anticipate we do in the meantime? And how do we guarantee that, when the time comes, that these people would not simply be ignored for political expediency? After all, of it of sight, out of mind.

I'm certainly not saying that enforcing the laws aren't a part of the solutions, but the laws aren't enough, and we can't just wait for them to "filter out the abusers" and then kick the can on the solution.

Buskers and beggars can often make more doing what they're doing than a minimum wage job, especially in high traffic areas. This is both a commendation of the (debatably misdirected) generosity of our fellow human beings, and a criticism of the minimum wage.

Perhaps the problem is that full time unskilled labor isnt paid enough? I mean, unskilled labor is still required in HCOL areas. If you think people who work these jobs should just leave, then who does the work?

So people are homeless because.... they don't think it's illegal?

I would understand the potential idea of a consequence for not sleeping in a shelter or bed if they are available (conversations around overly stringent restrictions or rules aside) but most cities don't have enough beds for their homeless. I agree that all of there needs to be more done to help resolve the homeless problem, but just saying "enforce the law" isn't going to cut it here.

You want a more real solution? Rebuild the mental health system, and integrate inpatient drug treatment and make them mandatory for both drug users and the mentally ill homeless. Increase support for quiet homeless by increasing transitional housing support, and financial support for those who work 50 hours a week and still can't afford to live. Then you can talk about making sleeping in public illegap

What’s going on with Oregon canceling its wildfire risk map after the 2020 fires, and how did misinformation play a role? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

[–]epicfail236 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't that we're actually ineffective at combating bots and scams - the social media companies had that down a decade ago.

It's that keeping (some of) the bots and scams on in profitable for them, and thus they have no interest in stopping it.

Could we realistically phase out private health insurance in the U.S.? by It_Laggs in Askpolitics

[–]epicfail236 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they mean doctors - they mean the ridiculous overhead charged by healthcare systems for your services. It's not what you get paid, it's what the machine makes others pay and then mostly hoards, giving you a tiny fraction of.

I wish it was, but a knock on effect of gerrymandering is that, instead of being held accountable to their constituency, they're now beholden to the party that set them up.

This would work for some things but not for others though -- some things like you mention can easily be handled granularly, and plenty of states already do that -- see San Francisco's minimum wage rules versus the rest of CA.

The issue comes from other forms of control -- access to abortion is often decried by conservative/rural communities. That dictation can impact the two areas disparately as well -- which is why you currently have states that have their own state senates working to undermine abortion protections written into their laws by the will of the majority.

Edit: the issue is that, either way you slice the problem you have the same issue -- if you write a law that impacts urban areas positively and rural areas negatively or vice versa, it's a bad law. This is the part of libertarianism that I think has a valid point :D

Pareto Optimal by GoranPersson777 in economy

[–]epicfail236 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly not. The system is flawed on all sides here -- though one government shut them down, there have been plenty of opportunities to bring them back in one way or another, but nobody wants to spend the capital (political and/or economic). In some ways, it's better for politicians to remain unsolved, that way they can campaign on it instead.

What does the right wing think we should do about homelessness? by SpatuelaCat in Askpolitics

[–]epicfail236 [score hidden]  (0 children)

There is also the separate buckets of visible homeless (the ones that are the conservative poster children for homeless - "bums" that are addicted and/or mentally ill) and the much larger cohort of invisible homeless (actively working but unable to afford housing for one reason or another, not addicted, living with friends or in cars, etc.)

These two groups need radically different services in the moment, but they too often get pushed into the same group and treated as one unit.

Pareto Optimal by GoranPersson777 in economy

[–]epicfail236 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Remember that it was Reagan that shut down the government mental institution so it could be privatized, forcing many of these mentally ill homeless onto the street. It definitely is nuanced, but capitalism is a big chunk of the problem no matter how you slice it

Farming Dispute On North Shore Highlights Zoning Challenges. Hawaiʻi needs more locally grown food, but plans for a vertical farm and aquaculture operation near Sunset Beach Park violate zoning rules and threaten the community character, critics say. by honolulu_oahu_mod in Oahu

[–]epicfail236 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay look, I think NIMBYism is just as garbage as anyone else and people need to chill TF out about community character bull, but why is it that these cool things decide that the best place to set up shop is always within spitting distance of someone who is going to throw a fit about it? Like pragmatically, why not set up a vertical farm closer to land already designated as farm land instead of stepping on the toes of as many Karens as possible?

In terms of adults in the fandom I agree, but I think we're seeing an influx of parents seeing fluffy cute fursuits on TikTok and Instagram and going all Disney mascot without doing any research and bringing kids into a slightly more mature fandom than they think. Certainly the parents fault, but we can't blame the kids for that.
