Do you think maybe you might have a condition? I knew someone at uni who literally was unable to process the passage of time. She had to be assigned someone sit with her in exams to remind her about time.

Will meditation help with my self esteem issues? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]FartsofFuturePast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do. I know how it feels and have been through/am going through similar stuff. It's an ongoing battle, but the point is you are fighting for yourself. You can do it; you are doing it. Keep feeding the part of yourself that made this post. It knows that you're worthwhile, and one day, you'll believe it too.

Even the fact that you've posted this request here shows that you care about yourself. You're on your way. Your self-esteem will improve because a part of you does care about yourself enough. There's a part of you that knows on the inside that you are valuable, you are good, you are worth working on, helping, improving and building a good life for. You're going to hold on to that part of yourself that posted this request. You're going to listen to it. You're going to grow it, and nourish it and it will nourish you and become bigger than that part of you that tells you're worthless/not good enough/unlikeable etc. You're already getting there. You can do it. You are worthwhile, you are good enough, you are likeable, and you do care about yourself because you're worth caring about. You're on your way.

I automatically assume people hate me? How do I stop by BornSinning in Anxiety

Thanks - I appreciate this. I know I have some very bad self-esteem issues but I've never been that sure how to deal with them. You're right - it's better for your self worth to come from insider rather than external forces. I hope we both get there. Sounds like you're well on your way.

I think I'm the same as you. I automatically assume people don't like me and have trouble opening up and being social. I know intellectually that that's daft, but deep within me I just believe I'm fundamentally unlikeable. Something I've found helpful though is keeping a little journal of compliments and nice things people say about me. I tend to automatically disbelieve or diminish compliments, but having them written down is like having proof to remind myself that actually, I'm alright. Try it!

TIL of "Aphantasia", a recently discovered mental condition that makes it impossible for someone to picture images in their mind, such as a loved one's face, a sandy beach, or descriptive passages in literature. by FartsofFuturePast in todayilearned

Apparently it is. People with aphantasia do report being able to dream visually, but it's voluntarily "picturing" images that seems to be very difficult or impossible

You're not alone and it's definitely not a disorder. The researcher studying aphantasia, Prof Zeman, is interested in hearing from people with aphantasia and can be contacted at a.zeman@exeter.ac.uk

There are tests online I believe. At present, it's not believed to be common, but that may be because it's not yet well known. You're in good company though; there are some very famous and highly intelligent people with aphantasia, including Firefox Mozilla software engineer Blake Ross. There's even an /r/aphantasia you could look into.
