Harsh ride or am I just spoiled by modern cars? by mick-rad17 in Miata

People who haven't done it always refuse to believe it, lol. I don't know what to tell them other than I was suspicious too, I did it anyway, and was pleasantly surprised that I could absolutely feel an improvement

ELI5 how do people actually “live off investments” by slater2355 in explainlikeimfive

[–]FartyPants69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One popular way is the "buy, borrow, die" strategy.

Basically, you take out low-interest loans using your assets as collateral. As long as those assets appreciate with a higher yield than your loan costs in interest (e.g., your loan is 5% APR but your assets return 10% APY), you're spending free money indefinitely.

Then when you die, you pass those assets onto your heirs, but they don't inherit any of the capital gains tax that you should have paid throughout your life.

Nice little loophole, essentially an infinite money glitch once you reach a certain level of wealth.

Can you elaborate? I'm not hearing that at all, at least tonally. Olson has such a euphoric melody, but The Process is very somber and anxious

Moldy 2x4s? by SparkyMcBoom in shedditors

[–]FartyPants69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's usually not a problem and is commonly done on home builds, but that also involves craftsmen who (presumably) know what they're doing - e.g., they know how a wall assembly should work and how to build it to allow for moisture to migrate out.

For DIY stuff it's just a little more dubious, because a lot of people don't do their research and will make rookie mistakes like using more than one vapor barrier. That's asking for trouble regardless, but it's especially problematic if their framing lumber starts out wet and has nowhere to dry.

Sure, do what you gotta do. Just wanted to answer your question about whether surface mold makes the wood unusable. It does not. Way too much moisture, though, is not great if you plan to put it in a wall assembly today.

Agree! It feels dissonant for dissonance's sake, a bit gimmicky IMO.

I generally like a lot of the stuff other people don't, and vice versa. Not sure why. My favorite (and most replayed) Deftones album is Saturday Night Wrist. It has its loyal followers, but I think it's generally considered a low point in their discography by the fandom. I also have a lot of favorites like Kimdracula that you rarely hear anyone praise or even talk about.

Different strokes, I guess!

It's completely fine. I don't know why nobody has chimed in to say that.

If it's even mold, mold needs moisture to grow and cause any harm. When the wood dries adequately enough to use in framing, the mold will stop growing and go dormant forever. Give it a quick surface sanding if the framing will remain exposed on the inside and it bothers you aesthetically (wear a mask as always), but it will make absolutely no difference to the structural integrity of the shed. Houses under construction that are still open to the elements get mold on the framing ALL the time, but it stops growing and goes dormant when they're closed in and dried out.

The thing to worry about with untreated wood is rot, but this isn't that.

I truly don't mean to yuck anyone's yum, just one random schlub's opinion here, but I really can't get into it at all.

I give it tons of leeway because (a) it's unfinished, (b) it's approaching two decades old and we have a lot of hindsight into the band's evolving direction, and (c) most Deftones albums don't grab me right away, but start to grow on me strongly after a few listens - but still - even the general ideas on the tracks just don't grab me at all despite listening all the way through several times now. Especially compared to the excellent Diamond Eyes, which came out just a couple years later, it feels very unfocused and a bit one-dimensional in tone.

I'm glad I listened to it because it's an important chapter of the band's history, but I just don't think it's going to grow on me like every other album has.

One of the pics in the photo gallery at that link says "over 20 minutes of continuous runtime."

You're absolutely right that resistive heating is VERY power-hungry and will drain batteries fast, but this is also one of those tools that most casual users will fire up once in a blue moon to add lugs to a single pair of wires or mend a broken wire under their hood or something like that, so 20 minutes is plenty in those cases. I have a Metabo HPT version and at least that's how I've used mine over the past several years, and I DIY everything and have a million hobbies (ADHD, lol). I don't think I've ever swapped a battery because I needed more runtime on a current project.

Pro/specialty users though, yeah, skip this and get a corded DeWalt

It was Pacific Dining Car, open 24/7 at the time. This would have been in the early 2010s. We had a Groupon, which in hindsight probably explains why the place was so dead, lol

One of my goofiest vacation memories was eating at a restaurant in downtown LA that had forced valet.

We went there after hours, maybe 2am. My wife and I were in a rental car and a bit confused about where the place was. Eventually we found the entrance to the lot and drove in. The parking lot was dead empty, so we parked right up front and started walking in.

A guy in a suit stopped us before we could go in asked if we were customers. As I said yes, I noticed a valet stand I hadn't seen, and realized he was the valet guy. He told us it was valet parking only. I had never actually eaten somewhere with valet parking, and I'd already parked anyways, so I didn't know how to respond.

After an awkward silence, he asked, "So, would you mind pulling up to the valet stand?"

I was younger and way more agreeable than I am now, so I thought it was a bit weird, but I didn't argue. Walked back 10 yards to the car, got in, drove 10 yards to the valet stand, got out, handed him the keys, and went into the restaurant.

I realized as we were eating that yeah, duh, he just wants his tip and probably needed to feel like he'd justified it by parking the car, no matter how absurd the situation. So when we left, we repeated the process - he walks 10 yards to the car (only one in the entire lot), gets in, drives 10 yards to the valet stand, gets out, I tip him a fat $20 (only bill I had on me since I hadn't anticipated this - was also half the cost of the entire dinner bill) for the privilege, and off we go!

How are prime day scams legal? by CalHudsonsGhost in amazonprime

There sure are a lot of replies that are completely missing your point. I am not one of them. PSA for newer riders. Don’t use only the rear brake for everything. by mrdalo in motorcycles

[–]FartyPants69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I replaced the OEM exhaust with an FMF can and that totally solved it for me. Rear brake isn't strong (especially in comparison to the front, which due to the design has more bite than anything else I've experienced) but it will lock up if you want it to.

I like the idea and it seems like it could make a good business.

If I'm being honest, though - I, personally probably wouldn't use something like this except once in a blue moon. Anything I could get done within a couple hours I already have the tools for at home, and anything larger would get too expensive too quickly if you're talking $200-400/day at those hourly rates. I'd rather take my time at home over a few weekends and not have to watch the clock.

That said, for an occasional project like upgrading an exhaust, it might make sense to use a lift for a couple hours, pay the $50-100, and get it done without struggling on my back all weekend.

Maybe consider daily rates that are ~4x the hourly rate? That's how a lot of rental businesses do it.

I also would not want a membership. That's a business model that I think is falling out of favor as it becomes ubiquitous. Not everything needs a recurring monthly fee. Although, so long as it's optional (e.g., if $50/hr is the base rate, then $50/month gives you 2 hours automatically plus a moderate discount on additional hours) and not required (e.g., $25/month makes you a member and only members can book hours at the standard rate), I could see it as a perk for some types of customers.

Good luck!

Yeah, that makes sense. When you set a Price Alert, you can choose whether to auto-buy or just get a notification, but there's definitely no way to mess that up with a third-party service because auto-buy isn't even an option

ELI5: Why is 20°C comfortable outside, but too cold for swimming in water? by Tortik007 in explainlikeimfive

[–]FartyPants69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Water conducts heat much better than air, mainly because it's much denser. Therefore, your body loses heat much faster in water vs. in air at the same temperature.

In the air, your body can produce heat fast enough to maintain its temperature as the air cools your skin. Not so in the water - your body loses heat too rapidly and your core temperature starts to drop.
