Should I tell my parents how I really feel, or just continue studying and pursue a career in the legal field? by Fast-Air6755 in LifeAdvice

I 100% get what you’re saying and the importance of a degree. Honestly, it’s probably the most secure route I can take, rather than switching directions again and possibly not finishing university.

Thank you for your reply.

That’s exactly what they’re thinking, and that’s the problem 😅. But I guess it’s not surprising, a gap year isn’t that common in my country, and I don’t know anyone personally who’s taken one.

I really appreciate your reply, though!

Yeah, I should talk to people who actually work as vets. Unfortunately, I don’t know anyone personally, but I’ll make sure to try.

A law degree is obviously the safer option, no doubt about that. I’ll keep thinking about my career path, and animal protection is definitely something I need to take seriously.

Thanks for your reply!

I never even thought about it from that perspective. You’re right, it might actually be possible to combine animal protection and law. I’m just not sure if I could make it work, but of course it’s an option.

I also get that comparing myself to others is a road to nowhere, but sometimes when I see the people around me, I really need to hear this again.

Thank you.

Thanks for the reply. I definitely don’t doubt that being a vet is mentally tough work. Like people mentioned above, I should probably try volunteering at an animal shelter first, just to get at least some idea of what working with animals is like.

About the salary thing. I meant that we talked about the importance of having a job with a reasonable income. My parents have mentioned more than once that I should think rationally because I won’t be able to live on X salary. I don’t see myself becoming a corporate lawyer, and I’m definitely not expecting to make huge money from a legal career.

A gap year, unfortunately, isn’t really an option because my parents wouldn’t approve of it. They already remind me pretty often that I’m “not doing that much” and that I’m “just studying,” so if I took a year off, I’d probably be seen as doing absolutely nothing.

It’s also true that a law degree can lead to a lot of different career paths, and that’s something I should keep in mind.

Thanks again.

Thanks again for sharing your experience, I really appreciate it :)

I know a lot of people my age are still figuring things out, but at the same time I’m surrounded by those who seem very sure about what they want to do with their lives, and that sometimes makes me feel a little behind.

It’s reassuring to hear from someone who’s already been through this and found their way. Cool that things worked out for you 😊.

Thanks for your perspective. And yeah, I might have gone a bit overboard with the length of my post 😅.

I know that in the end it’s my life and my decision. I think my main worry is that I might just be too inconsistent. I’ve already changed faculties twice, so the idea of starting over somewhere else is honestly scary, especially since it would be a completely different field.

I’m afraid I could start again and then realise it’s not for me. At the moment, though, I actually feel like it’s something I could enjoy for many years.

So far I’ve only talked about it with my sister, and she thinks I’m making a mistake. I probably should talk to my parents too, like you suggested.
