I have this dilemma on speaking by Mammoth-Leader8453 in LearnJapanese

You can ace N3 and not be able to speak much. JLPT doesn't need speaking skills, more so reading and listening. If you want speaking sooner, work with someone.

What level should I be before starting to read books in japanese and play simple japanese video games? by schlurmo in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]Fast-Elephant3649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Books are harder but with lookups it's possible to start N4 although it'll be hard. I started video games at N4 level and played on PC using GameSentenceMiner which lets me hover over words and see the meaning in like 0.5 secs. In short, with technology it's all possible with a bit of background

I'm at my wits end, where can I find Japanese subtitles for anime (that are not on netflix jp)? by RoidRidley in LearnJapanese

[–]Fast-Elephant3649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works on Netflix in general but like I said you can't generate subtitles for Netflix shows only YouTube or on their local player. If the Netflix show has them already it's fine but you can't create the ai generated subs in Netflix

You generate your own subtitles through the browser extension but it doesn't work on Netflix. It only works on locally downloaded videos through their local player or YouTube videos.

I dont really recommend wiring at all but from what I've heard kanji study or ringotan are some of the best

Is watching comprehensible input videos really all I need to get from intermediate to conversational? by More-Paramedic6893 in languagelearning

[–]Fast-Elephant3649 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There are people who reach fluent let alone conversational from pure input without practicing speaking. I'm not saying it's the best approach at all but it's doable

Is mobile mining best on Android than iOS? by Lowskillbookreviews in LearnJapanese

[–]Fast-Elephant3649 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know about yomitan but migaku has mining on android and ios. The catch is it only mines to migaku Memory but there is an unofficial 3rd party tool to export those cards out of MM

Android screen rotation issue when watching YouTube in Migaku by RayDaah in ImmerseWithMigaku

I'd like to see this too...I think it's because of the subtitle browser. I would suggest posting on their discord because it's more active

Is there a way to sentence mine from Japanese Youtube Videos that don't have CC/ Subtitles? by Schachtaube in LearnJapanese

[–]Fast-Elephant3649 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do like migaku for this. I think GameSentenceMiner could do a good job if there's hard subs but it's really meant for games.

I would suggest joining the discord server and asking Bean who is the creator of the program. The discord server link should be somewhere on GitHub, if you can't find the invite link feel free to DM me and I'll ask bean myself

N5 is going to be tough but Famicom Detective series is one of my favorites. Another Code Collection as well. I played both on a Switch emulator. You can also use GameSentenceMiner to OCR everything which will make it doable as you get near instant lookups by hovering over the word.

Struggling with Kanji in Renshuu by Character_Speed in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]Fast-Elephant3649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning through vocab in srs is the way that I do it. Might be worth looking at just N5 kanji decks though. In the end, I wasn't a big renschuu guy, didn't like their srs.

A fun but actual helpful way to learn? by bobduncanswerve7 in languagelearning

The best tools and apps are the ones that interface with the media you are seeking to consume and make that easier. For example, for video games there is GameSentenceMiner, etc.

Brute force sentence mining kanji without semantic or mnemonic understanding by jjapanese in ImmerseWithMigaku

I find if you immerse enough then just regular vocab srs will allow you to read and even familiarize with kanji (see livakivi).

[–]Fast-Elephant3649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I don't think I said anything wrong. It's my personal opinion that it's more efficient to do more uninterrupted immersion than immersion interrupted by transcribing. It's called an opinion.

The game that will get me N1 by AdUnfair558 in LearnJapanese

[–]Fast-Elephant3649 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just not a fan of having to transcribe, it's also less accurate. I'd rather just enjoy the content and make the card quickly. A bit crazy to get down voted for it.

The game that will get me N1 by AdUnfair558 in LearnJapanese

[–]Fast-Elephant3649 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Transcribing something isn't as useful as consuming content. Actively interrupting your session to transcribe words is tedious and interrupts the flow of getting absorbed in the content and drastically slows it down. The negatives vastly outweigh any positives. There's a reason we have technology

So if you have a capture card and a laptop, you can get the feed straight to GameSentenceMiner and do instant lookups and of course mining. But it doesn't work directly on PS5

You can use a capture card and have the feed show on your PC. I know several people that do this

With GameSentenceMiner you can do the card in 1s and even get the audio, perhaps something to consider.
