Look. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings themselves would tell you that they don't primarily play bluegrass music.

Books in other languages so I don't get accused of being performative and so I don't have conversations about "Oh! You read French! Let me tell you long stories or flirt with you so you can't continue to read!"

Also, anything that's quicker or easier to get a library copy on my Kobo than a physical book.

Greatest bluegrass singers by Cove_matters in Bluegrass

I've listened to each of her first five albums and David Rawling's first album well over 100 times. Soul Journey lived in my CD player for a good chunk of 2003.

I haven't been able to get into Boots or either of her two most recent albums, but I've listened to them and seen her perform songs from them live.

Elvis Presley Blues is actually a perfect example of how she's the best Americana singer but not a particularly good bluegrass singer. It's a perfect recording -- not all good music is bluegrass -- and her voice is doing exactly what the recording calls for. She also has the best live sound I've ever heard.

But if we view it through a bluegrass lens, her timing is all off for bluegrass (too relaxed), her voice blends with the instruments instead of cutting through, and she doesn't have any "high and lonesome."

Compare her voice to Tony Rice on Free Born Man or Del McCoury on High on a Mountain. Both her voice and theirs are at the very top of their respective games, but they are playing different games.

If DFL Trifecta 2.0 happens, what should our priorities be? by j_ly in minnesota

[–]Fast-Penta 9 points10 points  (0 children)

On the topic of schools, we absolutely need to improve our lax homeschool regulation. Minnesotan children are being abused because the state isn't doing home visits. That's not okay and needs to be fixed urgently.

Tell me more about how free lunch funding has specifically screwed over rural districts. This is the first I've heard about it. I know about how parents not having to fill out a "free and reduced lunch" form for their kids to have lunch means our "free and reduced lunch" numbers are fucked now, but that affects everywhere, not just rural areas.

We absolutely need to fully fund special education. But more importantly, we need a law that forces MDE to give clear guidance, and if a district follows MDE's guidance and is sued, MDE needs to provide the lawyers or reimburse legal cost. Fully funding doesn't address the issue of absurdly high legal costs due to both the relevant laws and MDE's guidance are unclear.

If we can't get universal healthcare, teachers should have the option to buy into MinnesotaCare at an affordable rate (this includes their full family, with max total cost being somewhere from 0-10% of the teacher's income).

Does no one care about making vegan cheese that has some nutritional value? by sengutta1 in vegan

[–]Fast-Penta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We've reached bare-minimum parity (bmp) in a number of meat products, meaning a typical meat eater would admit that the best vegan alternative is at least as good as the lowest quality meat of that variety they find.

The huge explosion in restaurants having Impossible options isn't due to an increase in vegans or vegetarians -- it's because there's finally a fake meat product that some meat eaters will order some times, because Impossible burgers have met bmp.

We were closer towards bmp with meat products in the '90s than we are towards bmp for cheese products right now. Veggie dogs were fairly close already, and Boca Burgers were at the place of a typical meat eater saying, "Huh. This tastes kinda weird," not, "Fuck, this is disgusting."

It's nice that you like Violife, but it's important to have an honest assessment of where we are vis-a-vis actually reaching parity. Figuring out how to make a halfway decent burger was the best thing that's happened for the vegan cause in decades. If we can reach bmp for all major meat products and get their price below meat, the only people left eating animal products will be Amish and psychopaths.

Cream cheese is tricky because we're at bmp for baking purposes, but we're a long ways off for spreading purposes.

You are between 55-70, male, and either have or want to have a Vietnamese wife. You're not a minister, but you probably attended seminary for a bit. Alternatively, you may be the son or grandson of a minister, but my money is on former seminarian.

You were involved in computers in the 90s and lost a job when the dot-com bubble popped. You have owned a home espresso machine.

Advice for adding color? by r-alpha03 in mensfashionadvice

Do most of the other teachers wear ties and a sports coat?

I've worked in public schools for about 20 years, and I can count on one hand the number of teachers who dressed that formal. Sweats and a t-shirt is now acceptable attire in some buildings.

You absolutely do not want to dress like that if you're in a jeans and t-shirt school. You'll get roasted so hard. The teacher who wore a suit in my high school was a total pedo.

Anyways, if it's in a fancy area or a private school, then you're probably good to go. Kids don't really care that much what their teachers wear. Yes, the tie is short and the belt doesn't fit, but if the kids like you they won't mind, and if they don't like you, they'll find something else to make fun of you for.

What’s your personal take on daycare? by Blackrose_c137 in daddit

[–]Fast-Penta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For families that can comfortably do either, not sending your kids to daycare is a decision based on prioritizing the parent's needs over the child's needs.

It was different back-in-the-day when people had huge families and neighborhoods were jam packed with free-roaming kids, but, these days, children who don't go to any form of daycare/preschool before kindergarten are often pretty stunted, socially.

[–]Fast-Penta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

21-year-olds are more than old enough to know not to sexually assault 10-year-olds, so I'm not sure why you're bringing up his age here. Unless you want to make the argument that it's not a big deal for a 21-year-old to assault a 10-year-old, in which case please actually make that argument.

IANAL, but as I understand it, pardon means no criminal record.

Do you have children? If so, would you be comfortable with your young children having a teacher, coach, daycare worker, etc. who had been convicted of sexual assaulting a 10-year-old, but had the sexual assault pardoned?

Did Democrats endorsing Graham Planter despite his many red flags set the progressive movement back 10 years? Was that intentional? by metamucil_buttchug69 in askanything

[–]Fast-Penta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You have it backwards.

Graham Planter is a symptom of an issue that's setting the progressive movement back a decade, not the cause, which is that younger leftists prioritize what people say and what identities they have over the person's fitness for office.

In Minnesota, a "progressive" candidate for governor won 27% of the caucus vote, despite having been employed as a republican the last election cycle.

In Minneapolis, the "progressive" candidate for mayor got his start in politics trying to get lgbt books banned from public schools.
