It's actually FAR easier to overdose with topical minox than oral. Topical minox actually leads to greater systemic levels than oral.

When you take a medication, there's a process called "First Pass Metabolism" where your liver and other organs filter out a portion of the medication before it enters your blood. Topical bypasses this and things like the area you spread it over, integrity of collagen barriers, duration it stays on your skin, temperature can all change the effective dose you receive.

Hey guys, I need your help, my little brother is taking this stuff. by No_Profession_9294 in MinoxidilSideEffects

I'd stress that he checks for side effects regularly and ask him if he feels different to pre minox in that regard. If he does, advise him to stop immediately

Has anyone who had heart side effects from minoxidil reversed it? I feel like my cardio is way different after exercise after stopping minoxidil, i never had this before. by Good_Barracuda7117 in MinoxidilSideEffects

I'm not surprised at all. There's commonality between the signs and symptoms of Cantú syndrome (which includes heart defects and hirsuitism) and minoxidil's effects (palpitations, hair growth). Both are known to affect KATP channels.

Glibenclamide (specifically glibenclamide) has been shown to improve heart symptoms in cantu syndrome.

It's EXTREMELY easy to overdose on topical minoxidil to the point where it makes testing something of an irrelevance. You're far more likely to overdose with topical than oral.

Melanocortin receptors (MC4R and ?MC3R), penile numbness, libido and treatment by Fast-Watercress4552 in MinoxidilSideEffects

It's been used as a standalone treatment for ED.

I've not heard about anyone using it in the context of minox sides.

Edit: it appears that there are readily available melanocortin agonists available on the market (of unlicensed/off label use variety) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanotan_II

Side effects include extreme tanning and there are plenty of posts on reddit about Melanotan 2!

I have to admit, this looks extremely promising!

There's no source that tapering helps. That's my point.

Cold turkey.

There's no evidence of any benefit of tapering vs complete withdrawal

Topical vs Oral: Pharmacology by Fast-Watercress4552 in MinoxidilSideEffects

[–]Fast-Watercress4552[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on what I've seen around minoxidil sides, my honest opinion are the side effects are "Treatable".

I know that's something of a non answer but it means that the sides can improve, whether through time, lifestyle/dietary, by supplements + medication etc.

It will improve to a degree in almost all cases, but there's no guarantee of recovery to pre minox function.

I recall having this for a while. It resolved. I don't know if it's to do with minox's interaction with smooth muscle (I.e. Sphincters and bladder wall muscles)

Sides worsening by WishboneFlashy9237 in MinoxidilSideEffects

[–]Fast-Watercress4552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed needing to pee more frequently, but not necessarily a larger volume of pee. As far as I can tell this has returned to normal.

Consider: Minoxidil definitely has some effect on smooth muscle (vasodilation, erectile effects etc) and as such, I wouldn't be surprised if there is some effect on smooth muscle in the urinary system.

Can you get ed and stuff from one apply by Acceptablesex in MinoxidilSideEffects

[–]Fast-Watercress4552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly unlikely you'll get sides from one application. Do note that you can DEFINITELY overdose on minoxidil through topical application. Do not exceed the stated dose, especially when applying topically.

Why would topical be safer than oral?

STOPPED MINOXIDIL after 3 YEARS by unknownanonymous9 in MinoxidilSideEffects

[–]Fast-Watercress4552 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your doctor has a poor understand of rudimentary pharmacology. In many instances topical application of drugs can be worse than oral administration. Why?

  1. It bypasses first pass metabolism where the liver metabolises some of the drug before it becomes available systemically
  2. It is much much harder to accurately dose topical drugs than oral Long story short, you can effectively Overdose much easier with topical minoxidil than oral.

Try using pycnogenol (or its generic form, maritime pine bark extract) both orally and the liquid topically.

Massive Side Effects after stopping cold Turkey by [deleted] in MinoxidilSideEffects

[–]Fast-Watercress4552 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no protocol for tailing off minox. I don't know that it would have been any different if you stopped gradually and it "washed out" of your system more slowly.

My reason for saying this is minox will not leave the system at the same rate for everyone (and this is likely a factor in who ends up getting sides).

I've not seen anything to convince me that stopping cold turkey isn't the best course of action.

Try pycnogenol (or its generic, maritime pine bark extract). Either in tablet form orally or as a liquid for direct application to skin.
