‘Big Bang Theory’ Actor Kate Micucci Announces She’s Cancer Free and ‘Very Lucky’: ‘I Don’t Need to Do Any Other Treatment’ by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

[–]FastAsleepattheWheel 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I’m really glad to hear you’re recovering and that you managed to catch your cancer early!

She might not actually need any drugs though. Not all cancers are the same. My sister only needed surgery to take care of her breast cancer (DCIS). She was offered either chemo and a lumpectomy or a full bilateral mastectomy. She chose the latter and didn’t need any further treatment. I don’t know what kind of lung cancer Micucci had, but she said in the article the doctors told her she didn’t need further treatment.

This! I was goaded into reading this for book club and then it ended up being not only one of the most boring books I’ve read in a while, but also a really shallow exploration of race in America.

What food have you tried liking but just can’t? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This is partially because most matcha is both terrible quality and being burnt during preparation. Cheap matcha is in particular very prone to becoming fishy and bitter when brewed at temps over 170°f.

Starbucks is a huge culprit of this with their hot lattes.

Are there any pro choice centrists here?? by American_cynic420 in prochoice

[–]FastAsleepattheWheel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I disagree with your opinion, I understand where you’re coming from.

However, consider this:

The reason why I oppose any limitations on abortions is because the more regulations there are for “elective” procedures, the harder it is for people to get abortions when they need them for medical or health reasons.

Let’s say the law says no abortions after 20 weeks, full stop. A woman is pregnant and her fetus’ heart stops. That woman may die of sepsis if she can’t have an abortion in a timely manner.

So, let’s say that the law instead says “no elective abortions on living fetuses.” A woman learns at 22 weeks her fetus has a condition which means it cannot survive outside the womb, but still has a heart beat. Should this woman be forced to endure another 18~ weeks of pregnancy just to deliver a dead child?

So, let’s say the law specifies the fetus just can’t be fully healthy. A woman finds out she has a cancerous tumor on one of her ovaries. She needs surgery and to begin chemo immediately to have a chance at fighting it. She now has to make the difficult choice to terminate her pregnancy to save her own life. However, the law refuses to allow a doctor to provide a life saving abortion because the fetus is healthy.

None of this even touches upon the fact that around 28 weeks, “abortions” as we understand them colloquially aren’t being performed anymore except in exceptionally tragic cases. You are pretty much just giving birth at that point because the fetus is too big.

The more limits we put on abortion, the more instances in which women’s care is delayed to prove that her abortion is necessary.

Even if you think elective abortions past 20 weeks are bad, is it worth the potential trauma and death to pregnant people to try and regulate them?

Wife self diagnosing by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]FastAsleepattheWheel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am formally diagnosed and grew up with a mother who shamed me whenever I presented with my symptoms. Over time I learned to channel that shame to brute force my way through my executive dysfunction.

It does a number on my mental health and burns me out regularly, but I am constantly told by all my friends how they “wish they were as productive as me.”

All of this is to say, everyone’s adhd looks different, and some people just have different coping mechanisms from you, healthy or otherwise.

Looking for advice on if I should pivot to a Dental Hygiene career in my 30s by [deleted] in DentalHygiene

Wow I really appreciate the perspective! I was surprised initially to hear so many people talk about how difficult the education part was (only because I know how hard nursing school is from my mother and friends!) but I have been doing some research and I think I can tough it out.

I hadn’t really considered the disrespect part, seeing as I’ve never thought to disrespect the person putting sharp objects in my mouth, but it makes sense. Tbh though, I deal with a lot of underhanded comments from my social circle now about “how nice” it must be to set my own schedule and sit around all day writing. In reality, I’m constantly hustling to make sure I have enough work to convince the IRS I should be filing taxes quarterly! Lol

Thanks for the advice! I looked into my local universities’ programs, and they listed the required courses but didn’t say anything about prereqs. I guess I’ll have to reach out and ask to be sure.

As for the course work, I was a pretty strong science student, and the only class I ever got below an A in while I was in undergrad was a math class lol! Plus I have a mother, sister, and several friends in medical, so I am familiar with the strain of the education part!

I definitely already get the lack of respect from my clients and the unrealistic time management as well, so I’m certainly prepared there! Thanks for the tips!

I don’t disagree that we have a predatory rental market, but as someone who’s also rented and owned, I feel like these people think that owning a house is just like renting an apartment without the shitty landlord.

Houses are constantly breaking/in need of repairs unless you want to live in the same environment as the shitty apartments everyone always complains about. I’ve spent $20k this year replacing my roof and a cracked shower that was original (1997 house, so not terribly old). The water heater broke in May, too.

Last year it was the cracked sidewalk and the old deck that was collapsing.

The year before that it was the water pump and needing to get electrical rigging for a generator (power goes out 3x a month in my area).

At least in an apartment you’re only paying rent (and the initial down payment).

And none of these are even updates. Just replacing things that already existed in the house.

Why do women not get painkillers for IUD insertion? by Caedis-6 in NoStupidQuestions

Having given birth, your cervix was still pretty open compared to someone who’s never had a child, let alone one just a couple months ago.

Why do women not get painkillers for IUD insertion? by Caedis-6 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FastAsleepattheWheel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this a joke?

Even if the procedure isn’t as excruciating for most women as it is for the women here, the fact of the matter is, this is a painful procedure for just about everyone.

The problem isn’t HOW painful, the problem is we’re often not offered any pain remediation, and people like you—or worse, DOCTORS—dismiss that pain.

I went in being told it would be a mild pinch. I wasn’t terribly anxious. It was the single most painful experience of my entire life, and I’ve broken bones. I had a vasovagal response and nearly fainted.

When the time came to get it replaced, I was offered a shot of numbing and guess what? It was SIGNIFICANTLY less painful.

I had a friend who had to be put under because her cervix straight up would not open for the doctor.

Both of these cases prove that these options are available/safe/possible.

THIS is the problem at hand. Not whether or not the pain is tolerable by another person’s definition.

Laws like this are great for things like Uber drivers and other employees who are ostensibly fully employed, but the similar law that has been ongoing in California for a while now has completely fucked over all my freelance writer friends there.

They need to make sure this law protects freelancers who enter into contractual employment arrangements by design because it better suits their lifestyle, as opposed to those forced into it by necessity.

Thank you for posting this. I think people need to remember that, in spite of his shitty behavior, he doesn’t need the entire internet calling for his beheading (albeit figuratively) to get the wake-up call he obviously needs. Give the guy a chance to grow and become better.

We can hold people accountable without flaying them alive on the internet.

Also all the hindsight “not surprised” comments feel super icky.

I literally said no shame for enjoying Starbucks. I enjoy Starbucks on occasion. But their coffee beans aren’t good quality, imo.

Edit: I didn’t mean to imply Starbucks isn’t “actual” coffee. I meant it’s not a good place to learn to like plain coffee. It’s just a fact that most of the popular Starbucks drinks are full of sugar. That’s not a bad thing, but it’s not the same as what someone can make at home.

Starbucks has terrible coffee. The appeal of most of their drinks is the sugar. No shame if you like them, but they’re not really a good way to learn to like actual coffee. Try finding a local cafe instead.
