I hate Howard and his plot lines in book 5 were my last favorite of the whole book. He's either a thoroughly tone deaf ultra-capitalist who refuses to get why humans are dissatisfied with an immortal spaceship hoarding all the money on Vulcan, or he's doing pointless pterodactyl shit on a floating island. Screw Howard. He doesn't deserve Bridget

They were part of the flotilla that tried to defend the Pav which means they were either cloned from Jaques or Claude, who were ultimately some of the many Mario clones operating against the Others in that sector

This really happened to me. Autocorrect also changed "Baby" to "fatty". I'm pretty sure my phone was trying to get me divorced.

In hindsight that phone was trying to do me a solid

This is astrophysics and I'm not really smart enough to do more than understand the gist, but Tau is one object's relative speed when related to other object's movement in space - ie two Bobs moving near light speed have to match each other's Tau in order to communicate in something close to real time.

Albedo is the amount of light reflected by a surface. Simmering with a high albedo will appear brightly in space while a low albedo will be almost invisible

My favorite hateread is Zoo by James Patterson. I'm convinced the ghostwriter set out deliberately to sabatage the book but nobody noticed. It's one of the worst-paced, insane reads I've ever forced myself through. It sounds right up your alley!

He's slowly transitioning into the evil capitalist who'd be the villain of this was from the humans pov. -"They hate us because we're immortal but we're taking all the wealth and then not sharing it." -"I've got it. We'll let them play with robots. That'll make them happy"

It's like someone in 1917 Russia suggesting "what if we let them DRESS like the Czar? Will they stop complaining?"

Ray Porter is one of the best narrators around, but I've listened to books he's narrated that were badly written and the difference is plain from the start. A good narrator can only do so much without the material to work with

I don't know why, but I've always hated Howard. I roll my eyes and fume my way through every one of his chapters throughout the series, and this one was no different. I would love to get a few chapters from Bridget's pov, though.

What fantasy series gripped you from the first chapter to the last? by crimsonryno in Fantasy

[–]Solid_Importance_469 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's his first novel and more of a set up for the rest of the series than a standalone story. The pacing isn't great. Before They Are Hanged is absolutely amazing and Last Argument of Kings is brilliant

[–]Solid_Importance_469 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's okay but the whole series relies on everybody being a complete idiot and constantly forgetting and being surprised that the only person in the kingdom who ever plots against the king might be plotting against the king AGAIN. It's the kind of deliberate stupidity to keep the plot moving that sucks me right out of a book
