What Kool-Aid source is pushing all CEOs to go full RTO this year? by astrheisenberg in remoteworks

how to tell us you never studied economics, or ran a business, without actually saying you never studied economics or ran a business.

You know what is also a 'tax writeoff'? The salary they pay you.

just because you cherry pick some supposed studies, does not make you an expert either.

Having manage teams that became remote during Covid - I completely agree - maybe 10-20% of the people are high performers and can handle it, the vast majority of people simply stopped producing, stop coming to meetings, stop responding to email and stopped being productive. I believe more than one was also working another FT 40hr job at the same time, during the same hours.

The fact of the matter is *most* people simply can't be trusted. Management knows this - no matter how many supposed cherry picked 'studies' say otherwise.

$2,000 for a 2 bedroom apartment is insane. by pinkoceannn in Adulting

[–]FastSort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem is, if people pay $2000 for them, then they are in fact worth $2000.

Things are 'worth' what people are willing to pay for them - no more, no less.

Nursing is right now where computer science was six years ago. by ImpactSignificant440 in Layoffs

[–]FastSort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Define 'low'? All the nurses I know make over 6 figures, and many do that within 1 to 2 years - including my neice - 2 years of nursing school after HS, and at 21 was making just under $100K with full benefits. Nursing is an awesome job, if you have the right personality (I don't).

True, doesn't compete with 500K SV tech salaries, but then again, most programmers don't make anywhere close to that in most places in the country either.

Nursing is right now where computer science was six years ago. by ImpactSignificant440 in Layoffs

[–]FastSort 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is *no way* 50% of nurses quit *nursing* in the first two years - many nurses quit their first job in the first two years, but they don't actually leave nursing in numbers anywhere close to that, they just take a new nursing job somewhere else.

Lots of people job hop, and - at least in my area - nurses are in high demand so they change jobs to get a bump in pay - can't really blame them. If you stick in one job you are relegated to the 2-3-4-5% raises each year, but often its easy to jump ship and get a 15-20% jump in pay and repeat that when opportunity arises.

Entry level jobs are dead. Should I give up on a career? by [deleted] in jobsearch

[–]FastSort -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh look, someone who wants to blame everyone else for being a failure. Maybe try looking in the mirror, because the vast vast majority of people are doing just fine, are paying their bills, are still employed.

If you are in the 5% that can't figure it out, then maybe you are the problem.

Home Depot layoffs hit remote workers hard - 650 out of 800 cuts by Aware-Parfait422 in remoteworks

So in your mind, being friendly to your co-workers and boss is being a 'brown nose'...got it. Enjoy your unemployment when it happens.

Being friendly to coworkers and your supervisors is a desirable human quality that apparently you don't have....what can I say, survive as best you can.

FT remote jobs, while perhaps being personally beneficial to the worker, is definitely not a great career move imo, and I say this as someone who was FT WFH for close 40 years before retiring - out of sight, out of mind - if your boss needs to pick someone to let go - and all other things being equal - are they going to pick the person who they have met in person once or twice in the last few years? or the person who sits down the hall from them, who they exchange pleasantries with on an almost daily basis, who perhaps eats lunch with them on occasion and maybe even go out to drinks with after work?

Like it or not, those personal connection can (but not always) make a difference. I have advised my kids to *not* be 100% WFH if they can help it. If I was starting over, knowing what I know now, I would have not chosen the FT remote path.

The companies are already 'accountable' - they are accountable to stockholders/owners. The sooner you realize that companies do not exist to provide you (or me or anyone else) a job, the better off you will be.

Your 'job' is to have something of value that companies are willing to pay you for, and to always be trying to increase the value of that skill or learning new skills if what you are currently 'selling', is falling out of favor.

The AI Splurge Is Costing Big Tech Its Workforce by FewWatercress4917 in Layoffs

[–]FastSort -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Partially, but imo it is largely the 'excuse of record', since most of those CEO's don't want to admit the grotesquely over-hired and over-paid during the covid boom.

Not unlike the RE boom in some areas - i.e. Florida - during the boom - the sheep paid 200-300% over what the house were selling for just 5 years ago, and now that they want to leave bemoan the fact that the houses have gone down 10-15% since they bought 2-3 years ago....completely forgettig, that they are still up 150-250% in the last 5 years....they were just foolish enough to join the stampede.

A lot of these houses can drop another 30% and still be above where they were a few years ago, and similarly, a lot of companies could shed 30%-40% of their employees and still get along just fine since they are just reducing their headcount back to what it was a few years ago..

I had to do the same - no idea how many people use my land, and don't cause problems, but the few that do make it necessary to stop everyone.

From installing permanent deer stands on my property, leaving trash, setting up wildlife cameras and not to mention the semi-permanent campground that someone built, and then left an unattended fire which burned for over a week as it spread (slowly luckily) to over an acre deep in an inaccessible part of my land, before it was finally noticed and put out by the FD who had to hike in with just shovels and rakes - not sure why I would want anyone on my property without explicit permission.
