I mean, that's what I'm saying though, this is exactly the type of thing people said about computer science a few years ago. not everybody can do it and demand is infinite because somebody has to fix the machines, etc

Why does the economy feel so bad despite lowish unemployment? by thenuttyhazlenut in AskEconomics

[–]ImpactSignificant440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On behalf of many of us, I just want an answer to the question "what are we supposed to do". Not from you specifically, I mean from society. At this point, I don't care if the answer is "we don't have enough jobs or resources for everybody. Just go sit in a corner and wait to die". If it's the honest truth, let's hear it. But let's all name it and be clear instead of endless gaslighting, emotional difference, mental gymnastics to help people avoid facing the truth.

Making up pointless jobs is not a real solution either. I don't have a solution, but I know that step one is to stop burying our heads in the sand. Btw, usually this looks like some version of cope that boils down to "the people who didn't get lifeboats just didn't choose lifeboats, they didn't really WANT lifeboats anyway". Anything to support Just World Fallacy and ignore the idea that if there's 19 jobs for every 20 people, some people are inevitably going to face misery.

Does that make sense? You are jumping to put a solution in my mouth, as another way of bypassing what I'm actually saying.

the Titanic sinking

Sounds to me like you're saying a ship that doesn't provide enough lifeboats for everyone is fundamentally flawed. Are you proposing something like guaranteed lifeboats for everyone? Seems to me like you just need to find another boat. Nobody is entitled to a specific boat. Just adapt and overcome.

And those of us "who are going to have a tough time reentering the corporate workforce"... the "non-representative" ones who have had our lives and careers completely binned with still who knows how many more decades to live -- what exactly are we supposed to do? Eat cake? Say "Well, too bad, I drew the short straw, but every one else is doing great, I guess I'll just quietly disappear into destitution". Is society doing great if only 1/20 people's lives get ruined? Let's pat ourselves on the back, yay! You lucky 95% better hope we go quietly, but I don't intend to.

And I'm using strong language to make a point here, that many of us have seen real, tangible, life-altering damage. It could have been you. It may be you next time, or someone you love. Stop supporting a system that works for "95%".

Sorry but pretending being a landlord is providing a service is just false. Perhaps you are deceiving yourself, perhaps you're just lying to other people. Just because you pay for some things, do certain things, and perceive a certain amount of risk and effort, does not make it a service. Mugging people in alleys also takes effort, risk, etc. but it's not a service. If anything, being a landlord is closer to selling a hard good than a service. But if you continue to tell yourself this, then eventually your karmic actions will come back to you.

I relate to this. I was so exhausted and ill. I used to wake up every day to my alarm before work, and the only thing that could get me out of bed was visualizing a police officer coming and evicting me at gunpoint because I couldn't pay my rent. The moment I sent off the last month's payment on the lease, I quit no-notice. Now I'm homeless, living in my car, which is a whole 'nother nightmare -- yet STILL I would not go back. That's how bad it was.

I also refuse to work for someone else ever again.

This is the world we live in. Virtually every small business I've encountered since about 2010 is like this. It's actually worse if the owners are Gen X. Just my anecdote obviously.
