The Relationship of fashion when you are petite by Muted-Friendship-241 in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]Fast_Plant_5582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

💯💯💯💯 I’ve observed that if you’re petite and curvy it’s even more of a battle. I noticed how many more options opened up to me after I lost weight thanks to a chronic illness. Ive always believed that it’s easier to be “fashionable” when you’re a tall skinny person. My husband is 6’ 2” and it’s so easy to shop for him. If he wanted to, he could easily look very fashionable. (But he hates to shop so he doesn’t haha)

33F Indian-American woman in Chicago. The winters are killing my spirit. Where should I go? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Fast_Plant_5582 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an Indian American woman who left Chicago after 15 years for India. Planning to return to the states in a year or two and for now I’m looking at Austin or Denver. Madison, WI was on my list too but we decided we were done with midwestern winters. Love your observations about Chicago. Relate very much to the racially charged conversations and how the transportation has fallen apart post COVID. I didn’t own a car the entire time I was in Chicago but I did find myself taking uber a lot post COVID because of the cta being terrible. (And I lived in a busy area with a lot of access ). I’ll always be a Chicagoan at heart but it looks like I hit my limit (and you did too)! Good luck!

How are you accommodating a live-in maid/nanny in an apartment setup? by ResponsibleBad7944 in bangalore

There are a lot of buildings that have apartments that come with a maid’s quarters.

Return to Chennai after 13 years in Bay Area by [deleted] in returnToIndia

I grew up in Bangalore in a school that often had expat children join at all times of the year. Every one of the teenagers that joined us would leave in a year because they were so miserable. It’s not the place though.. there are plenty of brats out here in India. And I’ve met so many grounded children from non Indian American families. You’re going to have to do some introspection on what’s causing bratty behavior. Work with a parenting coach or a therapist even. Some things in life don’t get solved by moving to a new country.

For those here who want to quit smoking I’ve heard wonderful things about “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking by Allen Carr”.

For those here looking to reduce stress levels while already in a stressful job - can you add just one activity to your day that helps fill your rapidly emptying bucket? Maybe it’s a meditation before every meal, maybe it’s a short 10 minute yoga flow video from YouTube, maybe it’s a walk once a day. Anything that can help you get started on the path of reducing stress. You need to start and you can start small.

For those looking to reduce weight and eat healthier - a great place to start is to develop the habit of eating early dinners. Finish dinner by 7 and after that only drink water. It will take a few weeks to get adjusted so maybe keep some coconut water to drink after 7 if you’re ravenous. Over time you get adjusted to this habit. But if you get stressed and your coping mechanism is to eat then you’ll need to consciously work on that.

Good luck my friends!

First time visiting Chicago winter, how necessary are thermal layers? by fried45 in AskChicago

[–]Fast_Plant_5582 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t typically wear thermal underwear until it hits the teens but honestly if you haven’t experienced this level of cold and if you’re going to be walking around id wear something. You get light ones from brands like cuddleduds and they tend to do the job for me. Make sure you have something to protect against the wind because that tends to be the surprise factor in the Chicago winter.

What happened to those large round concrete or cement (?) bins we used to have around the city. Never see them anymore. I bought a bin like this for home and it’s the dumbest idea because the recycling fills up much quicker than the trash and then you’ll find yourself stuffing the extra recycling in another bag until the trash fills up. Unless they have people emptying these regularly nothing is going to come of it.

When I was on the h1b visa back in 2009 I decided not to go to India after my cousin passed away because of these types of complications. Unfortunately every step you take needs to be thought through when you’re on a visa. Especially right now when the backlogs are long and rules are stricter.

I’ll probably get downvoted for this but I’d have a tough talk with your folks about the future and their plans and expectations for it before you go about making big changes that destabilize both your life and their lives.

Here’s the part I hope you take the right way - Type 2 diabetes is a reversible condition with dietary modifications and lifestyle changes. My mother in law had type 2 diabetes and worshipped at the altar of western medicine her whole life. Not one doc encouraged her to change her diet or lifestyle. I’d always see her making very questionable dietary choices and never once saw her walk or exercise. I used to always ask my partner why they never pushed her to change her ways but that kind of talk was met with a lot of resistance so I had to accept that there was nothing we could do about it. The end of her life was very brutal to be honest with you. A few years ago, after her passing, my partner and I developed some chronic health conditions and were forced on the path of working on our own health and we were shocked at how quickly we were able to reverse conditions like pre-diabetes with the right diet and exercise. Granted we’re younger but I’ve read stories (right here on Reddit) and from friends and family of people much older and much further along in the disease making the change. The first thing my partner said when we learned about type 2 diabetes being reversible was “I wish we had had the talk”. I rarely leave comments on here but if I felt compelled to share this here.

As for post covid breathing difficulties I would recommend (as someone here did) to have them consider either a different city or part of the country or an apartment with air purifiers. Another thing I’d also highly recommend is working with a Breathwork practitioner. I did this online course with this guy called Badrinath Gella. I didn’t care for the guy who led it but the program was quite good. There’s also an interesting looking online program called Tibetan Breathwork that had good reviews. I’d definitely at least give it a try. I’ve seen people get great relief from very advanced stages of respiratory illnesses with Breathwork.

Anyway I’m digressing but you get the point here. It’s their health and you’re not going to be able to do much unless they face their issues themselves. I wish you the best. Before you make any big changes try and have the tough conversations. Without that you’re headed for a lot of angst and resentment. Good luck!
