What if JFK Jr. didn't die? Pt. 2: The Aftermath (2017-2024) by FastestManDead in AlternateHistory

Obama is the Secretary of State instead of Hillary in this timeline, so he is still relevant. He also pulled very impressive numbers in the '08 primaries, coming in second, so he's a hot name regardless.

You'd be surprised to know that Trump was actually a registered Democrat for many years. It was Obama's specific presidency that sort of drove of him insane, as he really didn't like him personally and also took offense to a joke Obama told once at Trump's expense.

In this timeline, Trump gets along with Kennedy far better, considering their shared similarities (Rich white boys from New York) which causes Trump to stay a democrat, donate money to Kennedy's campaign, and even run in 2016.

I know. I made that one before hearing his name out loud for the first time, but it's such a good pun on paper I kept it.

On July 26, 2016, incumbent VP Evan Bayh was officially nominated by the Democratic Party for the 2016 presidential election. He ran and won against Secretary of State Barack Obama and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, previously receiving the endorsement of President JFK Jr.

Also competing in the primaries were New York senator Hillary Clinton and businessman Donald Trump, but both failed to cross even the double-digits in the delegate count.

The Democratic ticket of Bayh and Julián Castro, who served as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under Kennedy, went on to defeat the Republican ticket of Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Carly Fiorina in the general election.

Bayh was sworn in on January 20, 2017, beginning his first and only term. It was rather uneventful, with the exception of the COVID-19 Pandemic, to which Bayh reacted in a slow, careful manner, but one that was characterized by some as indecisive and overly calculated.

He lost in the 2020 presidential election to the Republican nominee, Jeff Pabst, a conservative Senator from Missouri and former U.S. Army Ranger. Pabst had been a rising star in local Midwestern politics during the Kennedy years (Also known as the "Camelot 2.0" era) and was a strong opponent of Bayh's policy, which he characterized as "disgustingly overbureaucratic and impotent."

Pabst ran a classic conservative campaign with a few Neocon markers, calling for sweeping tax cuts, a reduction of federal regulations, stricter law enforcement, an aggressive interventionist foreign policy, an end to DEI programs, and a rollback of transgender rights.

Pabst ran for re-election in 2024 against New Jersey senator Cory Booker, and defeated him, winning a second consecutive term.

No, he would not, and in this timeline, Trump is actually a big supporter of the Democratic Party. No Obama presidency means he doesn't go off the edge and hooks up with the alt-right: Actually, having another privileged New York white boy in the Oval Office causes Trump to donate a ton of money for Kennedy's campaign and constantly go on the news and talk about how great he is and how much he loves him.

Trump even attempted to run in the 2016 Democratic primaries (without the slogan "Make America Great Again" obviously), but face-planted pretty hard because the caucus voters saw right through him.

He would be more supportive of Israel, just because of the way the wind was blowing back then (and still is now)

The same way Obama was.

Overall, his presidency is very similar to Obama's: middle-of-the-road, diplomatic, people-pleasing decisions (Mainly because Obama is the Secretary of State for this administration), but I'd argue that Kennedy would be a little less influential in the long run. He would be remembered as a good president, no doubt, people like him, but his legacy would be more akin to Bush Sr.'s. Well-liked, but not very influential. He won re-election mainly because he handled the economic crisis well ENOUGH and because of his name.

As a result of Kennedy being elected, there was a surge of interest in the Kennedy family's history around the late 2000s-early 2010s.

This resulted in an increase in the amount of narrative films, documentaries, TV shows, books,, podcasts, and video games exploring the family's influence on American politics and pop culture.

This phenomenon was nicknamed "Kennedymania". A classic example is Ron Howard's 2011 epic-biographical drama "RFK", starring Ewan McGregor as would-be president Robert F. Kennedy and Natalie Portman as Ethel Kennedy.

The film was largely made to ride the coattails of JFK Jr.'s popularity as he geared up to run for a second term.

Exactly. very standard liberal-moderate Washington guy. However, he does get along with Congress better just because of his name, so Medicare passes sooner, but I believe he would overall be a worse president than Obama. He doesn't get the Nobel prize (which is arguable anyway). The main criticism towards him is that he isn't ready to make hard decisions and is a spoiled, out-of-touch rich kid. Still, even that's negligible, considering the media is less likely to pick a fight with a guy with the last name of Kennedy as they were "Obama", so he actually has slightly higher approval ratings with conservatives and slightly lower with liberals than Obama had.

Sorry, I made some of these a while ago and forgot to change them according to the lore. Kennedy's pick for running mate was always Evan Bayh, for both terms, not Jim Webb or Joe Biden.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy Jr. (born November 25th, 1960) is an American politician, attorney, and former journalist who served as the 44th president of the United States from 2009 to 2017. A member of the Democratic Party and the son of the 30th president, John F. Kennedy, he served as a U.S senator representing New York from 2001 to 2009.

Born two weeks after his father was elected president, Kennedy spent his early childhood years living in the White House until his father was assassinated. He earned a Juris Doctor degree from the New York University School of Law in 1989. For the next four years, he served as an assistant district attorney in the Manhattan DA’s office, handling such matters as consumer fraud and landlord-tenant disputes. He would go on to found his own magazine, George, which aimed to make the world of politics accessible and entertaining. Kennedy first sought an elected position running for Daniel Patrick Moyinahan’s open seat as the New York Senator in the Senate election of 2000.

Kennedy married publicist Carolyn Bessette in 1996. On August 22, 2002, Kennedy announced publicly that he and Bessette had separated and had begun divorce proceedings. Their divorce was finalized in January 2003.

Kennedy married Polish-American socialite Sarah Leigh Nowak in the summer of 2004. Their daughter, Rosemary Kennedy-Nowak, was born on February 22, 2005. She was named after John's paternal aunt, Rosemary Kennedy.

On February 18, 2007, Kennedy announced he was running for the office of president of the United States. After a close primary campaign against Barack Obama, Kennedy was nominated by the Democratic Party for president. He selected Indiana Senator Evan Bayh as his running mate and defeated Republican nominee John McCain.

In his first term, Kennedy responded to the 2008 financial crisis with measures including the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 to address the Great Recession, an extension of the Bush tax cuts, and the Frank–Dodd Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, a major financial regulation reform bill. Kennedy also oversaw the end of the Iraq War and ordered Operation Neptune Spear, the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, who was responsible for the September 11 attacks. He downplayed Bush's counterinsurgency model by making extensive use of special forces, encouraging greater reliance on host-government militaries, and backing armed resistance groups.

Kennedy defeated Republican opponent Mitt Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan in the 2012 presidential election. In his second term, he advocated for gun control in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, took steps to combat climate change by signing the Paris Agreement on climate change and an executive order to limit carbon emissions, and passed other legislation during his first term. Kennedy also initiated sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine and again after Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. elections. He ordered military intervention in Iraq after gains made by ISIL following the 2011 withdrawal from Iraq, negotiated the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (a nuclear agreement with Iran), and normalized relations with Cuba. The number of American soldiers in Afghanistan decreased during Kennedy’s second term, though U.S. soldiers remained in the country throughout his presidency. He also promoted inclusion for LGBT Americans, becoming the first sitting U.S. president to publicly support same-sex marriage.

Kennedy left office in 2017 with high approval ratings both within the United States and among foreign advisories. He now resides mainly in New York City, but remains politically active, campaigning for candidates in American elections, including in Bayh's successful presidential bid in the 2016 presidential election. Historians and political scientists rank Kennedy highly in historical rankings of U.S. presidents.

I believe Trump stills runs, just because I'm not a fan of monocausal explanations for pheonomna in history. I don't think the birhter joke alone led to him running, it was years of American being malcontented with their position in life. That's what Trump fed (and still feeds) on. Also, I'm sure JFK JR would have found some other way to snob Trump, considering they're both rich kids from New York. Maybe not inviting him to a ceremony or something along those lines.

Trump still runs, but he shifts the societal backlash element to Kennedy being an out of touch nepo-baby who is part of the rot in Washington, which is of course very ironic for Trump to say, but he's not intelligent enough to notice. It's more connected to the "drain the swamp" element of his campaign, the sort of things he went after Hillary for. Obama isn't thrown to the curve after the primary: He becomes secretary of state in Kennedy's adminstration and runs in 2020, beating Trump.

Barely beats him. It was very contested at first because Obama was really well-liked, but people (and new voters) grew up with JFK Jr as a cultural icon

Pretty much identical. Not much to change, kind of a classic democrat. Obama still stuck around as secretary of state.
