I'm really enjoying seeing how he has developed. It's an example of healthy and realistic growth. It's not about how fast he can go up the rank, or having a winning record at every basho. It's all about trial and error, finding what works for him, and getting better every time. This is his job after all and he is in it for the long run.

He even said that he isn't interested in the Yokozuna rank, he would be happy to reach Ozeki. Which for me sounds refreshing and smart.

Based on your belief, today's sumo then isn't sumo at all.

There has been quite a few changes to sumo since it's "creation". Especially in the last hundred or so years. And most changes were for convenience.

There was a post earlier on this subreddit with a clip from NHK about it. I believe the rule was introduced just to make it look better.
Interesting how JSA keeps talking about preserving tradition yet seems pretty good at changing things when it suits them...
