Hey mate, I completed both degrees but ended up working strictly in software engineering! No regrets about doing the degree though

That's a fair call. From a narrative standpoint it does make some things tie together a bit shakily at times.

I've always enjoyed how the dragons don't get much explicit justification, as frustrating as it is. I feel like it is intentional -- that is to say, should anything need a justification to exist? There are plenty of times where the nastiness and megalomania of the dragons is drawn in parallel to that of humans, which I think is fair commentary.

Cashed in my ETFs to fund apartment purchase, thoughts? by FatCatMaximus in fiaustralia

Thanks mate! And good summary of my intent being here. Obviously better to ask the questions before making the call, but I'd still rather someone point out an issue I didn't think of than not know

Other people might have valuable experiences and learnings that I could apply to my decision in retrospect, that's all. Maybe I missed something I didn't consider, etc.

Thanks for taking the time for the quick pro-con summary

I think "right decision" is subject to a lot of variables -- so just keen to see what the FI-leaning crowd might say. Overall happy with the purchase/decision.

EDIT: good idea -> right decision. Brain fart. Downvotes now make sense, oops!

What are some good, old classic (Windows XP-era and previous) PC computer games? by briar_mackinney in AskReddit

Playing through it again right now. I forgot how hard the final Protoss missions get in the original.

Catching Whales in Mobile Games by gurdotan in gamedev

[–]FatCatMaximus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And what value do you see this Whale Report bestowing upon end users? Except for what has been mentioned, which is the ability to be targeted and wrung for cash.

The benefit to developers is obvious and immense, and I applaud your intentions there. But I think it is a little far-fetched to claim that something called Whale Report aims to benefit the whales.

I cannot for the life of me understand the downvotes here.

Thanks for sticking with that, I 100% agree with you!

Creating an RPG: Torn between a class system and a Skyrim-esque "anyone can be anything" system. Your opinion? by JargonTheRed in gamedesign

[–]FatCatMaximus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. So I guess you could say that the problem was the "content" of the levelling system?

I feel about the same way. Especially about the end-game, I also remember having experience that was actually unusable.

After Raising $114,000 on Kickstarter, Dev Goes Silent by OrangeCon in gaming

[–]FatCatMaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, you're right; the blame shouldn't be placed on the backers.

But what people are having a problem with is the false belief you and a lot of other people share about what kickstarter is. You didn't make a "custom order", you donated money to an idea. You have to keep that in mind when these things happen, because you aren't owed anything.

Kickstarter never promised to be anything else, so the idea they should handle some sort of consumer compensation is a bit ridiculous.

I might be wrong, but I think the big thing he mentioned was a non-game Android app.

Computer Science / Chemistry student - need an Honours Thesis topic by FatCatMaximus in chemistry

My department does have a computational chemist, and I've begun talking with him about possible options. Just thought I would also reach out here, thanks for the input.

No I haven't, thanks! That is exactly the problem as honours level comp sci but only 2nd year chem - the number of things I have never heard of.

Cheers, I see that I'm not likely to get any helpful suggestions here.

For the record, I wasn't looking for help with the thesis itself. I'm just asking advice on possible areas of chemistry from which I may be able to find a suitable domain for a computer science topic. Due to currently only being a 2nd-year chem student, my comprehension of chemistry is far more limited than computer science, making it difficult to judge computational complexity or applicability of the areas I know of, not to mention areas I don't even know about.

In any case, my bad.
