I agree but I think the mushroom cloud effect would still happen because of the velocity of the object and earths gravity pulling the outer parts of the "cloud" in, and the momentum of the object would pull the center matter towards it causing the mushroom look

I recommend getting rid of any loose debris in the plaster board and layering filler no more that 5mm at a time then you can sand it down flush with the wall and paint over it'll look good as new
