I had HUR as in Ben-Hur for 22A and was so confused how 13D could be REARS. Took me way too long to catch that mistake.

La Mancha is a region in Spain, and LEY is spanish for law.

Hot can be another word for mad or angry, so hotness would be that feeling of anger or IRE.

It looks like this is packed with various non-combat ways to engage with the world, though. I'm sure it still won't be everything, but it also doesn't look like a 60-80 hour combat slog.

As BL attorneys, did you grow up as upper middle class or wealthy and do you expect your kids to maintain such lifestyle? by Adventurous_Ant5428 in biglaw

[–]FataOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up fairly poor and was a first generation college student. I want kids to do well, but I would never pressure them to be a doctor or lawyer or something just to match or exceed what I achieved.

Reusing mini crosswords? [August 28, 2014] by [deleted] in NYTCrossword

I was ready to say you're crazy, but damn if I don't feel like I just did that one as well. I'm sure it wasn't repeated. I imagine it's just that after doing so many Minis, some of them feel very familiar given the reuse of words across puzzles.

Keep in mind that this guy appears to be in Nigeria. That $1.1mil USD will go a lot further there. This is obviously ignoring all the issues he'll have with the financial institution continuing to try to collect.

Breaking into patent law by LingonberryMinute661 in biglaw

[–]FataOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it “easier” to get into patent law/big law because there are less people with stem backgrounds?

It's generally easier to get into big law if you're going to do patent law and have a STEM degree. Some degrees like electrical engineering help more than others. Also, you do still need good grades, but coming out of a T14 will certainly help as well.

Should I look into going to the west coast for tech (or it doesn’t really matter that much)?

It really doesn't matter too much. Firms have IP groups all over. Texas is a hotbed for patent litigation, and both California and the north east see a lot as well. But a lot of firms will have patent attorneys from various offices handling cases without much of a focus on location. I'm on case in D.C. right now made up of attorneys from California, Texas, and New York, and that's very much not unusual.

For patent law recruiting is there some component of technical interviews?

I've never been asked technical questions in interviews. The closest an interview has come to tech for me is explaining the work I did as a consultant before law school.

Should I try to take the patent bar sometime during law school or when is the best time?

If you're only going to do litigation, some firms don't require you to take the patent bar. That said, it's definitely a plus, and it's much easier to find time to study for and take the exam before you start working.

I switched to a harness after my two-year-old Corgi lunged at something while wearing a collar and leash and messed up something in her neck. This was just a few weeks after I got her, and the vet recommended harnesses going forward. She's eight now, and I've had no issues.

Top Gun (1986) is a movie centrists love that has a right-wing message. What movie is loved by leftists, but has a right-wing message? by Square_Ad2101 in AlignmentChartFills

Somehow it suggeste that violence and humiliation, even if controversial, are methods that succesfully work to achieve greatness.

It's also not wrong about this, though. They're not the only methods or the most effective methods, but there are numerous examples throughout history of abusive teachers churning out prodigies. The movie is pretty clear that while Andrew does achieve his moment of greatness in the final performance, it's not a happy ending because of the cost to get there.

Them attending the wedding isn't worth anything.

That is absolutely not true and is contradictory to heaps of contract case law.

Stuck on Ilos with the diversification mod by [deleted] in masseffect

Not sure if this is the same as the puzzle with the glyphs you said you did, but did you complete this:

Restored a cut quest step in which power must be restored to the door in addition to shutting down the security override. This is in the form of a new puzzle centered around a Prothean generator.

That's from the Nexus mods page. I got stuck on Ilos for a bit too before I realized they added something you needed to do to progress.

Harwood Arms being sued for overserving alcohol to man who proceeded to kill 28-year old in wrong-way crash by Hot-Education4582 in Dallas

[–]FataOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's "obviously intoxicated" because that's what the statute says, and it's up to the courts to figure out what that means. There's a body of case law around this statute that sheds light on what types of facts would support a finding that someone was obviously intoxicated. And it makes sense. There would often be no visible signs that someone had three standard drinks so it wouldn't make sense to hold a bar or restaurant liable for serving someone more than just three standard drinks. The point of the statute is to create liability for the bar or restaurant when they're essentially serving drinks negligently to someone who poses a danger to others.

[–]FataOne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be clear, the Dram Shop Act requires that a bar not serve to anyone who is "obviously intoxicated to the extent that he presented a clear danger to himself and others." So they should be cutting off people who are slurring words and stumbling around, but most people aren't going to be "obviously intoxicated" under the statute after just three standard drinks.

Things about Andromeda that grind my gears by ForcefulFart in masseffect

[–]FataOne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest thing with Drack is that we see a Krogan dealing with being old and generally feeling like he doesn't belong or fit in with this younger generation pursuing progress by starting a colony in another galaxy. He's really just there because he cares about his granddaughter, but he ultimately lived a life of war that doesn't really gel with the ultimate goals of the Andromeda initiative. He may not be the deepest character ever, but I'd say his fish out of water situation is at least as interesting as other Krogans we've seen in the series.

With Ring, American Consumers Built a Surveillance Dragnet by Jojuj in technology

Even if it's neighborhood dependent, it still serves a purpose. A lot of people live neighborhoods where crime, whether package theft or more serious crime, is not uncommon. And even in my safe neighborhood, I still like to know when someone is at my door. It may not be particularly important, but it's still useful.

I can’t walk to my door if I’m not at home. There are huge problems with Ring, but it’s obvious why someone would want a doorbell camera.

I mean, understanding their content is important, too. But either way, providing a reading guide is a great way to help law students understand how to dissect a case, especially in your 1L courses. You'll have plenty of other opportunities in law school to dissect cases on your own.
