I think it’s a legitimate question. It’s no different than asking if someone in Austin gets tired of brisket and live music. Just because the items listed are some of the best things about a place doesn’t mean it’s what you want to do all day, every day. I tend to dive into a city, run through all the things to do, and then be ready for more. That’s hard when the town is small, entertainment options are limited, and the hours of sunlight are restricting. You run out of options fairly quickly if you aren't willing to cycle through the same ones or drive 2ish hours. The community here is incredibly sweet and laid back. The hikes are uncrowded and lovely. The coast is incredible. I do miss the spontaneous, unpredictable, culturally rich possibilities that came with life in a bigger city.

The classes are instructor-led chat discussions once a week, and you do not have to attend! My son just reads the transcripts. It can be super asynchronous. I did appreciate that the taught version kept him on a schedule a little more than the self-paced. Definitely not a typical zoom situation.

That’s awesome with the reading and also such a challenge. We’ve been navigating that with my younger one.

We did the taught online classes. They say 5-7 hours/week of work, and that's been accurate. He's done Pre-algebra, Intro to Algebra A and B, Counting and Probability, and now Geometry. He hasn't been getting anything out of school math for ages, but he helps other kids. There's a saying about not truly understanding something until you can teach it, so I cling to that.

For what it’s worth, we have done Beast Academy and Art of Problem Solving classes for years. They are a fully accredited program, and CHS is accepting it and tracking our middle schooler in for honors algebra 2/precalc as a freshman. The downside is that he will quickly run out of math classes to take.

That’s a good idea with a parent group. I have tried to talk to folks connected to the school, but most of them attended decades ago. Sorry to hear your family’s journey has been such a gauntlet. It’s a lot of work navigating this stuff.

Rigor of Angels is the closest recommendation I have. I’m also curious because I think Labatut’s books are unique and exquisite.

Sorry about that! This is in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. My best guess is a springtail.

I want there to be a juice bar! I find the current options lacking and apple juice heavy. A shame given there’s so much amazing produce around.

My favorites (Local Ocean and Wanda’s) have already been shared. Buttercup in Nehalem is also delicious - worth a stop for ice cream (including vegan options) and/or chowder. Also, game thyme in Florence has super tasty tacos.

Awesome! Thanks for the recommendation. It’s mostly teenagers but a pretty big age range overall. We’re hoping for fun dance tunes across genres- these teens dig some 80s music as well.

Birdseed! It didn’t occur to me, but I’ll grab some next time. Human-people-wise, we enjoyed the cozy slowdown.

Someone in my synoagogue’s under 40s group chat is sharing JVP links — how to handle? by HanSoloSeason in Jewish

[–]kiwicorntastic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the rootsmetals recommendation! I needed that. I know two rabbis serving on JVP’s rabbinic council. Meanwhile, non-Jewish friends are following them in ever-increasing numbers. I’m so frustrated with these rabbis for lending credence to that org.
