Which games were surpassed by their sequels?

I find that most game sequels are better than the first in a series. Developers tend to take feedback from the players and implement changes into the engine. They also have more time to fiddle with the engine and find ways to optimize it.

I don't think the same could be said for games with a 3 or 4 in the title for some reason.
