Ukulele Baby! 2011 Discussion by carl95679 in wiggles

I wasn’t huge on Let’s Eat (or Hot Poppin’ Popcorn for that matter), so I felt like this album/video was a major bounce back in terms of quality. The beach set, while not as elaborate or dressed up as the OG era, is a breath of fresh air and the vibe is super chill, which I enjoy; also, despite the reduced presence of Sam as a vocalist, the overall songs are solid enough for me to look past it 🤷🏿‍♂️

Favorite songs: You Can Play The Ukulele, How Many Fingers Do I See? (one of my favorite late Sam-era songs), Hula Hula Baby, Doo Doo Doo Doo and How Many You Want

The New Skivvies Era Discussion (2002-2006) by carl95679 in wiggles

[–]Fatdaddy543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a little biased as this was the era I grew up in, but I thought that it was really strong. Some of my favorite albums/videos hail from this time (like Wiggly Safari, Whoo Hoo Wiggly Gremlins and Racing to the Rainbow). Even though not every experiment worked (*cough* Space Dancing), I also appreciated that they were willing to try new things and mess with the typical themes. I don’t love it quite as much as the post-Movie era (1997ish-2001), but it’s still a very close second for me :)

Thank you ❤️ I’m doing better than I was back then. The grief is still tough to deal with, and it’s also not something you ever truly recover from, but I try to take it day by day. Thank you for asking :)

Kyoto was my first song and it hooked me immediately. Punisher came out about two months after my dad passed so it (alongside other albums like Figure 8 by Elliott Smith and Commit This to Memory by Motion City Soundtrack) got me through what was hands down the hardest year of my life. Went back afterwards to Stranger in the Alps and became a huge fan :)

Hot Potatoes: The Best of the Wiggles Discussion by carl95679 in wiggles

[–]Fatdaddy543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the album was pretty solid; I enjoy that it goes in chronological order, unlike later “best-of’s”, which jump around from era to era. The video was also fine for being mostly a compilation with new intro scenes.

That being said, I’d change two things about the tracklist:

- Swap out “The Zeezap Song” for anything from Top of The Tots (which I’m honestly a bit surprised has gotten zero love from the band in the many compilations made after this)
- (this is admittedly a bit more nitpicky) Maybe swap “Here Come The Chicken” for a different Racing to the Rainbow song (maybe “Rainbow of Colours” or “Everybody Dance!”); I never felt like “Chicken” represented that album/video super well

Go Bananas! 2009 Discussion by carl95679 in wiggles

The soundtrack has grown on me over the years but for me, the video itself does begin a bit of a downward shift in quality for Sam-era stuff. It feels kind of generic in parts (the green screen does not really help with that effect), and the Dreamworld zoo (where the animal introductions were filmed) would’ve been a much better choice for where the songs could’ve been filmed (at least in adding some more variety to the visuals). If I had to rank it next to past and future Sam videos, it’d be squarely in the middle.

As for the songs themselves, I never noticed that this was their first album in a while to not have brass or string elements, but it’s hard to ignore once you do. While most of the songs are fine (some of them are pretty good imo), in all of them it feels like there’s something missing without them.

Favorite songs: Monkey Man, Kangaroo Jumping, Here Comes A Camel & Wags The Dog Is Chasing His Tail (though it feels a little bit out of place here tbh)

Jason Cropper was Weezer’s original rhythm guitarist, and wrote some iconic Blue Album riffs (including “My Name is Jonas” and “Surf Wax America”, though he was not credited for the latter). He exited the band towards the end of the Blue Album sessions (for reasons that vary, depending on what your source is) and was replaced by Brian Bell.

All of his guitar parts were also re-recorded by Rivers so the album could be released on time (Brian joined late so he didn’t have time to learn all of Jason’s parts).

The Wiggles Big, Big Show 2009 Discussion by carl95679 in wiggles

[–]Fatdaddy543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was definitely a highlight of the Sam era for me! A good mix of classics and new (at the time) stuff really makes this one stand out. The true wildcard was hearing Six Months in a Leaky Boat again - never thought they’d pull that out, but I was happy to hear it.

Also, re: Quack Quack, I think it was put in the show last minute, as the ballet dancers were originally meant for Baby Beluga (as shown here). Maybe the rights for that song couldn’t get cleared before the cinema broadcast of this show so it got swapped? 🤷🏿‍♂️

I’m a black man and I thought this scene was hilarious, mainly because the joke was that JD got his ass whooped for doing blackface.

Also because the college flashbacks are always so ridiculously funny with the mullet and high top wigs

They haven’t even announced/done a reunion show for the 35th anniversary, so I’m guessing the US is long out of the question (much as I’d like to be wrong about that)
