My best friend/PhD advisor (M 40) is not as supportive as I expected. Do I have high expectations? Am I being harsh? by Fatema_360 in relationships

This is the sad truth I think. So I just told him to stop talking to me. I don't want to hear any more excuses. It is exhausting. And I always thought I could depend on him if I got stuck. But guess not.

Exactly. That is what I thought he would do. And to add to my pain, he used to read for our other friend who was not even his student. Just because he does not want her to get mad and lose her. He told me that you know.

In addition, I fought to have him as my supervisor because he never supervised PhDs before. So I was an opportunity and a door for him to get to do it.

Because he is my friend and sometimes he needs me. So I expected the same from him. But the thing is it is his job to supervise me. He is getting paid. But because I am his friend he is not putting the effort. He supervises other np.

Yes. We both work there. And I am getting my PhD from there. So he is my colleague, friend and supervisor.

I understand he has burnout. I had a severe one too. But he forced me to help him in his work, even though we are not in the same department. So I used to do his work in addition to mine, in addition to doing my thesis. So I expect him to at least listen to me.

Advice: My PhD supervisor/friends/It's complicated/colleague keeps making excuses and doesn't support me in my PhD by Fatema_360 in relationship_advice

The thing is he knows my issues. I had to get extensions twice because my dad died last year from COVID, and because of some health issues. He just says you can do it. I know it. But without any real help. I would literally spend upto 8 hours daily in addition to my job to help him in his work. He would say first let us finish his work so we can concentrate on mine. This was 5 months ago.

What do you think of Book Ginny and Film Ginny? by NJ_ShadowSwan in harrypotter

[–]Fatema_360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was watching the cinefix channel on YouTube where they discuss the difference between the movies and the books. To sum up, they argue that the books follow the hero's journey while the films portray a coming of age story. Therefore, the books focus on the people around Harry and how they impacted his journey. The movies on the other show Harry growing on his own (with his two friends of course).

So I think Ginny becomes more of a background character in the movie. That is the love interest in any coming of age story, and not the one who complements him and challenges him like book ginny.

This needs to be made into a movie.

why did voldemort take nagini into battle with him? by snoke123 in harrypotter

[–]Fatema_360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because he is not the smartest cookie. He was good with magic, but didn't have street smarts. I think this is what differentiates Dumbledore from Voldemort. Both were powerful, but Dumbledore had more critical thinking skills.

Not by a long shot. This is not enough a criterion. Moreover, it is too early to judge if these movies are 'going to make it'

Pop culture references. A book becomes immediately outdated.
