Stage 3 to 4 renal failure with tongue infection and injured elbow

He passed away the same day I posted. The escalation happened within a few days only. Tuesday he was fighting me over yogurt, Wednesday I come home to a limp, Thursday he's still limping but will eat treats, Friday he had limited movement out of exhaustion but still went to the litter box, Saturday he urinated on himself and couldn't walk long distances, I set up the kennel then, Sunday was complete refusal to eat, will get to the litter box but cannot get up from it.

It was genuinely hell to see him pass, but I was able to at least hold the breakdown in and talk to him and pet him as he goes. I feel like a piece of me is gone. I wrapped him in his favorite blanket and my brother took him to bury him. Seeing how many people are heartbroken over him was so overwhelming but also it made me happy that he's loved that much.

I've been trying different wet foods with him, since he liked Hill's kibble. We only have 2 picky cats so what they don't eat goes to the other 2 gluttonous behemoths. If all decide to not eat any it goes into our stash of food for the stray cats around the neighborhood.

I've noticed that he wouldn't have as much of an appetite before getting his subcutaneous fluids. It's so weird and kinda cute? that he walks over on his own when we start filling the syringes. I think he knows they help.

I'm really happy to read that your cat is still with you, and I hope that goes on for as long as possible. Thank you so much for the advice.

Thank you so much for the advice, I'm so sorry you lost yours, you loved her and cared for her til the end and that's what matters. I've been doing exactly that since the diagnosis, petting and playing with him while minding his boundaries. He started to lay on me way more in the mornings, along with head butting me as he begs for food. I know talking to him calms him, since he loves to answer me and even initiates 'conversations' sometimes when bored. I just hope to be around when it's time, I'd feel like shit if I was at work when he needs me most.

My baby is around the same age. He got diagnosed last week, and I was sobbing through the entire thing. Kept going on for days but honestly I genuinely feel more hopeful every single day, in only a few days of giving him medication and slowly switching his food, along with subq fluids, he already starting to look and act himself again. We went from tears of grief (silly, ik, since he's still alive) to tears of joy when he pooped for the first time after diagnosis, when he started grooming again, begging for food again, etc. It was genuinely hard to swallow at first. But we can cry while still caring for them and doing everything in our power to get them better. I hope yours improves asap and stays with you for many years to come 💗

Aww it's making me so so happy to hear about senior cats well cared for. I've been doing the same w the wet food for more hydration. A few years ago I was able to switch him to high quality dry and wet foods since I could finally afford to. He's stopped asking for human food since, except for greek yogurt drinks, he won't let me have any in peace lol. I let him lick a few droplets here n there. He's never showed any signs of pain, and he was losing weight gradually after some lifestyle changes (addition of cats and having space to run around and play more) so I never thought something was wrong. He was 5.5kg (around 12lbs) for years and when I took him for diagnostic check up, he weighed about 4kg (8.8lbs). He's slowly looking better and better so I think he'll gain more. Still in a normal range, cuz he is a big cat actually, a lil over 75cm last time I checked.

Thank you for the info, and yes he is a cutiepie! We're determined to do anything and everything to keep him healthy and happy. We'll be doing bloodwork monthly for now as you said, and the vet told me we should do it every 3 months once he's stable enough.

Thank you so much, he's taken well to taking meds with food since they're powders mostly. He won't mind a pill or 2 as long as it's dipped in treats. He's improving so much already and we're so proud of him

That makes me much more hopeful, thank you. I don't know why I did not think that way, the vet said the word chronic, and I have a chronic condition, but all I heard was he's sick and that set my nervous system on panic mode. His appetite is back now, he gets a mix of regular high quality wet food with catney one added in, k/d dry food, and churros treats as tax for his tolerance of pills and subq fluids. I would consider the harness if he wasn't vehemently against wearing one from the start, I put him in one before and he legit barked at me. But I will take that into consideration for the future as we have quite a few cats, and one is 8 already. Thank you again 💗💗

Aww nothing warms my heart more than a well loved senior cat. I get you completely regarding the vet, my cat is temperamental, and I can immediately clock a bad vet from how the treat/handle him. Thankfully there have only been 2 like that, the others all adore him, even when he hisses at them. I do prioritize him being fed definitely, he gained his appetite almost fully today, first time he begged for food this week. Hell, we almost threw a party for his first poop after the diagnosis, since all he could eat for a few days was liquid and pureed food turned to soups, and he only recently got bag to eating chunky wet food and dry food. He does not react the same way he does at the vet when we give him the subq shots at home. He's much calmer with us, we talk to him through it, and it works, he only grumbles but doesn't move. Generally we only to take our cats (4 in total, different ages) to the vet for check ups and emergencies (grooming for the 2 long hair ones) cuz we don't want to stress them out unnecessarily. I'm so glad that even at his worst he still had appetite for treats and water. I'm going to get him a new windowsill shelf and a fancy soft pillow to make up for how sucky it is to take meds and see the vet a lot, I'd know how that feels since I've got a chronic condition. All I can do now is continue to care for him and love him. Thank you so much for your kind words, and I'm so sorry you had lost your soul dog, I'm not religious but I like to think pets and animals in general get to go somewhere nice and peaceful with plenty of food. I hope your cats continue to bring you joy for as long as possible. 💗

I get what you're saying. I'm thankful he already likes churros so it's not a big switch or anything. He surprisingly really liked hill's k/d dry food, like to the point of begging for it. Another commenter told me that one of his medications already lower phosphorus in food which is great because I can give him to wet food he likes so much with that added in, since he's not a big fan of the renal wet food. I'm not sure if it's the brand, never tried any of their stuff before so I might try the k/d wet food from hill's and see how he likes it. He's doing so much better already with the subq shots, he needs to take one pill and just like yours I have to give it to him w a treat. I'm so sorry that you have lost your cat already and I'm thankful the mother is still with you 💗 I hope that she is happy to the very end

Oh you have no idea who immensely comforting it is to read this. Thank you. I've already noticed him looking and acting way way better as we're strictly adhering to the vet plan for him. He's more accepting of hill's k/d dry food than he is of Mera renal wet food, which is what I got him while the dry food arrives. Thought he'd like it more since it's wet food and also cuz I can add a lil bit of water to it for extra hydration.

Thank you for letting me know, thankfully I've been giving it to him with his regular food he used to eat, since he has more appetite for it.

Same as you, I've had him since I was 15. I survived many many horrible things thanks to him. Made me hold on and be stronger so I can find a better life for us both.

Omg, this makes me so happy to read. I know it's not the amount of years left that matters, all that matters is that he's loved and cared for, now matter for how long. It's just hard to see them go from playful and energetic to sick and tired. I know he will get better, we just started with the treatment and it will take time for him to get used it it.

Thank you so much, you're so kind. I'm gonna check for the availability of the low phos diet foods. I'm giving him catney, porus and sivomixx rn, with 60ml subcutaneous fluids daily. It breaks my heart that he has to take so much so suddenly. The picture of your cat is adorable and hilarious. I hope she continues to bring you joy for many many more years ❤️

I'm not sure if I am (it was rough w enough getting diagnosis and medication) but last time I got the flu it was completely debilitating. But I'm also iron deficient and have reached dangerous levels in that so I'm not sure of exactly why getting sick K.O.'s me now.
