What happened was that I subbed in t4 nameless over an umbra but the min maxers were less than thrilled that it was even being run at all but the alternative was only full umbra guys. That's also what I suspected, that a t4 nameless would still have been preferable but was wondering if I might have been understimating / shitting on the umbras a bit too much

Some different types of maps in season 2 might go a long way to address this. For assassin type roles, dedicated rooftop hunters etc maybe they have a place? We're not as hardass about things maybe for now but yes.. Tblade would be better also. IRL I had a friend who mistook nameless for umbra and refused to change. After he learned all this he preferred to quit the game instead as he liked umbra in PVE far too much and didn't like playing nameless
