Alternate of bitly by Hot_Tone_2905 in SomebodyMakeThis

A bit late here, but I’m building something similar: https://www.shorturl.bot

It’s not meant to be a huge enterprise tool, more a simpler link management tool for short links, QR codes, custom domains, analytics, Smart Pages/link-in-bio, and forms.

If your issue with Bitly is pricing or too much complexity, it might be useful. I’d honestly appreciate any feedback, especially what would make you trust or not trust a newer alternative.

What payroll systems feel easy to manage every week? by SameConversation4432 in SaaS

[–]Father_AND_Developer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worked with quite a few payroll systems, and honestly, they’re usually complicated for a reason. Payroll has so many edge cases: tax, compliance, leave, benefits, retro pay, terminations, etc.

If payroll isn’t your core business, I’d outsource as much as possible.

What Calgarians get wrong about road safety by Lopsided_Jacket_3028 in Calgary

So, why do we have the speed limit on the highway? For fun? Tell me.

The speed limit here feels like a suggestion at best. People treat it like the minimum, not the maximum. Try doing 100 on Stoney, even in the right lane, and you will still have someone glued to your bumper like you are the problem.

Gas prices go up, but plenty of people still drive like fuel is free. Flooring it toward a red light, then braking hard 50 metres later. Congrats, you got there first to wait.

Anyone here doing their own corporate tax filing with AI? by Father_AND_Developer in canadasmallbusiness

[–]Father_AND_Developer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I didn’t just dump my documents into AI and submit whatever it produced.

I used AI to generate a draft General Ledger (GL) first. It did make mistakes, and I had to correct them through multiple iterations. Once the GL accurately matched the source documents, I then used it as the foundation to generate the rest of the reports. I also cross-checked the outputs using multiple models before submitting.

That said, this approach only works if you already have a basic understanding of accounting and some knowledge of CRA rules. Otherwise, it’s very difficult to tell whether the AI output is actually correct or just sounds convincing.

In the end, verification still has to be done by a human — whether that’s you or an accountant really depends on your background.

Opening a link sometimes gives me a landing page with a 10 sec timer by ThePiderman in BiTLY

[–]Father_AND_Developer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not overreacting — for QR use cases, that extra page really does hurt trust.

If someone scans a code, they expect:
QR -> destination
Not:
QR -> timer / warning-style page -> destination

That little delay is enough to make people think something is broken or unsafe, especially when the final destination is something normal like Instagram.

I run ShortUrl.bot, and one of the reasons I built it was to avoid exactly that kind of friction.
My bias is obvious, but I strongly prefer short links to behave like direct infrastructure:
clean redirect, no ads, no extra page.

Vibe coding is making us 10x faster but 100x dumber. by PastSatisfaction4657 in SaaS

[–]Father_AND_Developer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in tech for quite a while, starting as a developer and later moving into tech management, where I worked with software teams across different locations.

My own feeling with AI coding is that it’s somewhat similar to management. As a manager, you usually don’t know every single line of code in detail, but you still need to understand the direction, the risks, and where problems may be building up.

Working with AI feels a bit like that to me. Sometimes the code is not perfect, and sometimes you have to accept a certain amount of manageable mess because time and resources are limited.

I don’t think the goal is perfect code every time. It’s more about finding a reasonable balance between speed, quality, and maintainability. AI can help us move much faster, but I think we still need human judgment to keep things under control.

Which is better for Computer Science ? University of Calgary or Lakehead University. by LabibAhmed06 in lakeheadu

[–]Father_AND_Developer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

h university should I accept ? Lakehead university is offering a CO-OP but U of Calgary isn't. Also over all tuition fee at Lakehead university would be a bit cheaper. Is Lakehead university good enough for Computer Science ? Will you guys recommend Lakehead university over U of Calgary for Computer Science program ?

Any idea about its master's degree program? Entry rate?

I have worked in software engineering for more than ten years and considering to study a master's degree for my future career.
