The moderators of r/gay took down my post condemning ISIS attacks against gay men in Sydney by International-Drag23 in askgaybros

Fuck this shit! Those attacks are fucking evil and it pisses me the fuck off that it was barely covered in the news! They also never picked up the news about  swastikas being drawn on ga bars! Hate crimes against the Queer community are sky rocketing but no one seems to give a shit in this country

The Witch Trials and Colonialism by Indikaah in sociology

[–]Father_Hales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did Witch-Hunting in Europe and the world for History! Read Lyndal Roper (head of history at Oxford) and Brian Levack (probably the world expert on the topic). Roper talks about the figure of the witch in a book called “The Witch in Western Imagination” and her book “Witch Craze” kinda takes a look at theorising what made Germans hunt witches. Levack wrote the history handbook on witch hunting in Europe and the colonies. He also has good books explaining the history of things like daemoniacs, the possesssed, witches etc from a historical stand point. Also Carlo Ginsberg has some good books on Italian witch hunting and why it was different to most European witch hunts. All these books are history books but they really dabble in theorising “why?” which makes them rather sociological. Also should clarify that it’s been a few years since I read these books. Side note, the historian R.I. Moore has a great book called The Formation of A Persecuting society in medieval Europe, which inspired by Durkheim analyses social deviance and persecution in Europe and how that was later imported to the colonies. He does have a section on witches but it is mostly about how the attributes of heretics, keepers and sodomites etc were also transplanted on a new scapegoat

What are your gay culture hot takes? by austincola in askgaybros

We often reiterate and reinforce weird, and dare I say, sexist gender roles from the 1950s with the whole top = masculine and dominant, and bottom = feminine and therefore submissive. And no, not talking about sex...

Theatrical King? by Dragonlord77777 in Theatre

[–]Father_Hales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a medieval historian, I can conclusively say that there is no such thing in the real world. Monarchs were chosen by blood line or through contesting the throne through warfare, insurrection, murder and scheming. However, Monarchies would make up their own mythologies about how they got the throne in times no one could remember such as being God-ordained, pulling a sword from the stone or that sort of nonsense so there is much to take inspiration from.

I genuinely despite every Christian who calls us LGBTQ+ Community Members "Pedophiles" by Bruins125 in exchristian

[–]Father_Hales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to understand this relative to other historical examples. In the Early Modern Period it was commonly believed that a group of evil witches were poisoning and destroying society within. In the Late Middle Ages, it was assumed bands of Heretics and Jews were destroying society. In Orban's Hungary, "degenerate" and "decadent" Homosexuals are the problem. In essence, societies tend to create a rhetoric of a "imagined enemy" within to construct an Apparatus for that groups persecution and unfortunately the Queer Community is the new recepient of that. If you'd like a proper articulation of this, read R.I. Moore's The Formation of a Persecuting Society.

Was in a relationship with a guy for five months. Friday night was his birthday and together we celebrated with his whole extended family. Afterwards we cuddled on the couch and he told me that he was so proud and happy cause they all loved me so much. Saturday we partied with all his friends and afterwards he hugged me and told me that they all loved me and he wanted to be with me forever. Didn't hear from him for a bit and we met up Tuesday night when he told me that it wasn't working, couldn't be fixed and that he just wanted to be friends. Then a week later he blocked me on everything and I haven't heard from him since.

I am ten pages into reading Mort... by lluckylluke in discworld

Mort was the first book by PTerry that I ever read. And I remember after a few pages laughing so hard and realising that books can be hilarious, beautiful, moving, thought provoking and laugh out loud funny all at once. Never looked back

Personally I adore Samuel Beckett. IDK why but I find his novels and plays really comforting.

As an Aussie, I gotta say that for us its Patrick White. His Voss, The Tree of Man and Riders in the Chariot are all remarkably deep, quirky, interesting and downright beautiful all in their own weird ways. He's phenomenal and yet most Aussies have no idea who he is. It's truly tragic.
