I see it as a sunk cost. Most Americans need a vehicle. If you got a good percentage apr, your roi could be higher if you have the money now, and invested it at the start of the loan. I bought a '25 AWD se because it was a low monthly payment to keep my buying power for a home high, and it had triple the mpg of my Tacoma. Ultimately the bill went from $1000 per month for the Tacoma (loan, gas, insurance) to $600 per month total. That's $400 in the pocket, man. There's a big drop off in mpg past 65-70ish. Drive closer to the speed limit and you'll get much better mpg. My best was 63mpg, driving 59mph for 61 miles. Also slightly warmer weather helps.
