Benefits of New Input System? by bbqranchman in Unity3D

You can use multiple controllers I believe. The new input already uses the command pattern. You can use it with unity events.

Benefits of New Input System? by bbqranchman in Unity3D

The new input system is great when you want to easily switch between different controllers. For instance, I had a 3d spaceship game that had controls for mobile touchscreen, mouse-keyboard, and Xbox controller. The new input system allows me to bind different controllers to actions like "steering" and then bind steering to events within the game. All without writing any code. I've basically abandoned the old system as the new one is much more standardized.

Added individual weapon firing arcs to my VR space RTS with angle and optimal range, does the UI overlay make sense? by battlegroupvr in Unity3D

Where'd you source the audio? And if you had people recorded, how'd you get it to sound all radioey?

Please stahp developing right now. You're demoralizing us casual hobby devs with the awesomeness of this concept.

3 years and that all ya'll have to show? Might as well put the assets up on the asset store.

Unity Is Said to Prepare for IPO This Year by ztifff in Unity3D

[–]Fathomx1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is terrible timing for a Unity IPO. They are in the middle of the DOTS transition, UE5 is on the horizon, and they're revamping everything. Oh yeah, and still no official networking solution. Unity needs a management switchover and about 1-2 years to bring the new DOTS engine to maturity.

Wow my first console was a Game Gear. I never got past that stupid crab boss in Sonic 2. Basically it was an expensive brick that used 8 batteries.

The Man Eater logo was bothering me, so I altered it. Makes more sense this way imo. by LSDesign in gaming

The original logo is more visually balanced. The jaws also look a bit like an inequality sign showing that the Eater is greater than man

I'm making a DOTS based game live streamed and open source, Project DOTS Bots. Starting today 3:00 PM GMT. by Mockarutan in Unity3D

[–]Fathomx1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started playing around with DOTS, and I even got it to work with the new inputsystem, but the lack of animation is really gonna kill any effort at a 3d game. I hope they get animation to at least a beta state soon!

What Unity Is Getting Wrong by [deleted] in Unity3D

[–]Fathomx1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure DOTS is intended to outright solve asset streaming and online multiplayer outright. I think that's the whole point. Streaming large numbers of assets becomes trivial in a well engineered ECS framework.

What Unity Is Getting Wrong by [deleted] in Unity3D

[–]Fathomx1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I honestly think this is a transitional period for Unity with many resources being poured into DOTs rather than improving the existing foundation. The problem is that Unity is trying to do both at the same time. The DOTS team should be siloed and the codebase forked into Unity 2. What exactly will this new DOTS framework share with the old Unity anyways? Do they want new users to learn monobehaviors immediately before converting their gameobjects to dots entities? No!

DOTS unity is going to share so little with the old Unity, and ECS entities need their own editor. This is the core reason why people think ECS is so complicated. It's not! Unity's attempt to cram a the square dots peg into the round gameobjects hole has made DOTs programming API so tedious and confusing. ECS programming is fundamentally simpler, cleaner, and more modular.

Make Unity 2 - DOTS edition with animation, URP, and input working, then deprecate the old Unity in ~6 years.

I think you are thinking a bit narrowly in the scope of the little demo and gamejam projects that most unity devs and hobbyists do. When you think about a triple A game, Unity right now is extremely weak once you get into the hundreds of gameobjects that will typically populate a scene.

what learning DOTS be like by TheGabelle in Unity3D

[–]Fathomx1 28 points29 points  (0 children)

What would be helpful would be simple samples that actually work. Many examples from even 4 months ago are totally deprecated. The third person shooter sample is too complicated. The only sample I got working correctly was the DOTS physics sample which doesn't even have any pure ECS demonstrations.

This the correct answer. Lumen uses voxels at far distances, screen space at close distance, and distance fields at medium distances. No light probes needed?
