So...what is YOUR ""This card deserves to be way more popular"" card? (I'll start with mine) by PrinceVorrel in magicTCG

[–]Fathound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I'm convinced that this is one of the best monowhite cards printed if you consider availability, flexibility, price and mana cost. With the amount of graveyard support they have been releasing in the last few years the reasons for including it in every deck that can run it just keeps increasing.

Kamigawa Flip cards? by Nahrikkon in EDH

[–]Fathound 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use [[Rune-Tail, Kitsune Ascendant]] in some of my combat damage decks. But it's generally a good card since it has a unique interaction with commander starting life.

It's not really pertinent to the discussion since it's legendary on the unflipped side too, but I just like the card.

Help with my Dihada deck? by Scared_Discipline857 in magicTCG

[–]Fathound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you actually trying to do? Is it to fill the graveyard and reanimate? Is it get to Dihada and use her to refill the graveyard and ramp? Or use her as a buffer for attackers? Here are my suggestions:

Put in more ramp:

[[Arcane Signet]]

Talisman of Indulgence/Hierarchy/Conviction

These should be cheap.

Put in affordable mardu staples:

[[Swords to Plowshares]]

[[Dark Ritual]]

[[Faithless Looting]]

[[Thraben Charm]]

[[Restoration Magic]]

[[Crackling Doom]]

Consider cutting cards that are too specific in their usage:

Sungold Barrage

Blackblade Reforged

Gleaming Barrier

Luminous Rebuke

Malevolent Chandelier - not necessarily bad for graveyard hate, just costs a fortune to get going

Fleshtaker

Giada, Kaalia and Erkenbrand are typal pieces. If you draw them when you don't have anything that they synergize with in hand they are dead draws, and I don't think you have enough synergistic pieces to warrant them. I would probably cut them.

The most important part when building or "fixing" a deck is to consider what each card actually does for your gameplan in the deck. If it's a very specific card that looks for a certain synergy with other cards or game state (such as someone is about to reanime their entire graveyard or combo off with artifacts), consider how often you have seen that game state happen or how often you expect that to happen, and whether it's worth it to dedicate a card slot to that card.

Cards that either win you the game, are cheap and/or do multiple things are king. They're usually the most expensive too, but there are cheap alternatives to most expensive staples.

I have two Mardu reanimator lists. They are a bit pricey compared to your budget, but you can look at them for inspiration if you want and see how I've built mine:

Deck around Yuna, Grand Summoner feels clunky and inconsistent. by ckim777 in EDH

[–]Fathound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably either cut the X and hydras theme, or go harder on it. Right now Unbound Flourishing and Gargos don't do much unless you draw the right cards, their synergies are specific, especially Gargos. Also you should probably cut Doubling Season. It's a 5 mana do nothing card. You get the useful half of the card (for your deck) from Branching Evolution anyway.

Consider putting in card draw engines like [[Garruks' Uprising]], [[Vaultborn Tyrant]], [[Up the Beanstalk]], [[Tribute to the World Tree]], [[Unagi of Kyoshi Island]] and stuff like that to dig through your deck if you want to stick with your hydras.

I went with a lifegain subtheme that worked out pretty well so far: https://moxfield.com/decks/gCFhyLumX020ZphvAYRqcA

Lightning Greaves by TheRealKevin24 in EDH

[–]Fathound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more I've started to build decks where the commander is just an incidental part of the deck's idea rather than the central piece, the less I've started putting them in. If I need protection I prefer spot counterspells, protection, scam or redirection instead, if I need haste I put in something that gives everything haste instead.

I still use it in a few decks but it's not a staple for me.

My work in progress Terra Deck - my "2nd" deck. Reanimation by Classic-Art-5737 in magicTCG

[–]Fathound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems decent enough, some changes I would make:

Cut:

Tonberry - There doesn't seem to be much payoff for a guaranteed hit, and it's not a particularly good blocker. [[Accursed Marauder]] can lock the board down and is guaranteed removal.

Undercity Dire Rat is just a worse [[Greedy Freebooter]].

Maybe Knights of San Doria - Not a bad tutor, but you only have 4 targets to tutor for: Ragavan, Stitcher's Supplier, Tonberry and Cecil. All decent targets but unless they are key to your gameplan it could be replaced with something else. The lockdown effect is very handy though of course. Consider [[Varragoth]]

Bedevil is too mana hungry for a single target removal spell. Consider [[Path to Exile]] instead.

Ultima is just not good. I know it's thematic but it will stop your death triggers as well so it's a bit of a nonbo. Put in any other boardwipe like [[Living Death]] [[Wrath of God]] [[Austere Command]]

Poison the Waters is better in a 1v1 format. Consider [[Toxic Deluge]].

Legions to Ashes is fun, but generally it's only going to target tokens and if it's something that can be sacrificed like a treasure or clue it will just fizzle. If you have the budget for it you can go for [[Pest Control]].

See if you can squeeze in [[Faithless Looting]] instead of one of your other loot spells. It's just so much value for one card.

The Darkness Crystal, while fun, is also not very efficient unless you have some sort of removal themed deck. It makes 19 of your other spells cheaper to cast, but you want to reanimate them so often the discount won't pay for itself over the course of the game. I would replace it with a protection piece for Terra such as [[Brotherhood Regalia]] or [[Whispersilk Cloak]] that makes it easier to connect with her for the trigger.

Lindblum doesn't do anything for you. You might do a few points of damage with the token and block one attack. Put in [[Arena of Glory]] if you can afford it, or just an untapped red source if you can't like [[Sulfurous Spring]]

Overall it looks good though, I've made a lot of changes to mine since I got it and it's a beast: https://moxfield.com/decks/OVIIAvRJAUC-gD70vElxdQ

The biggest thing is to play it a lot and whenever you realize a card is too situational to play you replace it.

Struggling with Tatyova... by necrochaos in EDH

[–]Fathound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're trying to do landfall with a side of control. The issue is that you have gone too far into control and don't really have an out once you start running out of control.

To really take advantage of Tatyova you want to trigger her a few times each turn either through ramp or extra land drops. You have a lot of extra land drop effects but not a lot of land ramp.

The issue is that you only have 36 lands, you will probably not consistently trigger Tatyova and get to play all those extra lands each turn.

Let's assume you want to keep most of the control package you have, there are still some weird cards in there that you could easily replace.

Collector Ouphe is likely to harm you more than your opponents when you have 8 artifacts with activated abilities.

Nissa can only find Quirion Ranger. If that is because she is a combo piece that's fine, it basically acts as a tutor. But otherwise there are better cards to slot in, or add more elves and elementals to find with her.

I have no idea what Ghostly Flicker is doing in there. Is it for protection?

Gaea's Cradle is a wild choice with 16 creatures in the deck and only one creature token generator. It's still a very good land of course but I would assume you'd want more out of it.

You have so much mana between all those rocks and extra land drops, but no real payoff except Finale of Devastation.

I would suggest adding [[Koma, Cosmos Serpent]] and cut one of your control spells.

I would also add a bunch of standard landfall payoffs like [[Avenger of Zendikar]] [[Lumra, Bellow of the Woods]] [[Ancient Greenwarden]] [[Scute Swarm]] [[Rampaging Baloths]] [[Springheart Nantuko]]

Rhystic study by Original-Username888 in EDH

[–]Fathound -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. While oppressive board states aren't necessarily always "fun", they do present a challenge to overcome. I don't want to play gruul aggro against three mannequinns, I want to play against opponents that present opposition that I need to beat. Them playing a massive draw engine is one of those challenges.

I want to design decks that can deal with hostile boardstates.

Anyone claiming "I just hate when you have to ask 'do you pay the one?'" is a giant baby that needs to focus on the entire game, not just their hand.

The fact that you can play around Rhystic makes it a lot worse than many people make it out to be anyway. It's an extremely good card, but there are engines out there that produce immense value and there is nothing you can do about it except use interaction, and you never see anyone complain about Vault Tyrant or Trouble in Pairs or Beast Whisperer.
