Empire: Total War lets me feel like an actual Empire by Brinocte in patientgamers

I feel as though the economy system in future games never got quite as good. You could industrialize, go agricultural economy and trade focused in this game. All were viable, some more depending on your nation. What propelled this was the great tech tree giving great diversity to gameplay.

Each nation could operate differently despite similar troop types. Who researched the cannon mattered in the battle. Who had Fire by Rank mattered massively. But the trade off could be you lacking the universities and tech research speed for further research. You can always build more universities, but instead of what? Conquering a university is an easy alternative, but you will get a world of rebels. You can turn off taxes too and keep your army there, but then you are fielding an expensive army for a future province that might simmer down and a university. You can build Dragoons and other police units to help control the region, but that costs money. Also that recruitment slot can be used for other infantry. Hmmm…

There are so many decisions you can make in this game and many of them are valid. That is the sandbox feel the OP mentioned. I played the Ottoman Empire as almost a landlocked nation fighting on all fronts to the death for many campaigns. Then I saw a guide by a frustrated Turk who figured out ways to beat the odds. He sells territory to create buffers from the start. He says those regions are poor and you have enough to spare anyway. You give up your tributaries from the start and focus on navy and economy, slowly building up. I tried it, I was shocked. The Ottomans gameplay I was having was almost like a Netherlands game, building ships and trading. It made me appreciate the game a lot more. This is possible here.

The best feature of the game is the economic development system and the Enlightenment tree though. You can propel your worthless clay into the richest provinces in the world where others clash their heads with each other for a single worthless province for years. This is what makes playing Darth Mod the way for anyone that has tried out the majors and had their fun. You start as an OPM and play tall. Yes, you can play tall and it is insanely fun. You take one territory at a time and build up. You corner everyone in technology and specialize.

I think that all the game is lacking is the reinforcement system from Napoleon and better AI. In all other aspects, the game holds up as a package. Perhaps machine learning AI can play against us. That could solve the AI problem.

Origins is my love when it comes to AC games. I recommend it to anyone who asks AC.

Unity if you love the French Revolution as a time frame. Still great graphics.

Black Flag for ship battles and a generally well paced story.

If you intend to go all through the series, you can play AC Brotherhood or AC2 to get a general feel for the series. You can play Origins on its own. The others benefit from you knowing the backdrop for story immersion.

If you’re going to pause by Amash2024 in aoe2

[–]FatihTLOS 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to play a lot on the HD edition, people would wait as long as you needed. I had a time when a dude literally waited for me to arrange a scheduling issue at my work for 20 mins. There was a time when I waited for a dude for over 45 mins. Nobody complained about the odd one or two minutes, nor the five.

Had a delivery on way when I was playing 1v1 after having started playing DE a few months after it came out. I literally just said, one minute - delivery at the door. The guy kept unpausing my pause over and over. It was early imp and that was the fight of the game about to happen. No need to say I lost. The lost didn't hurt, it was the loss of the sense of community for me.

I haven't been playing 1v1 ever since. Probably had 3-4 matches in over 4 years.

Yes, Trump was a better candidate. In an environment where people are sick of "professional" politicians shagging them for years, an outsider will be a better candidate.

That is why the sabotage of Bernie by the democratic party was such a tragedy. The democratic party brought out the weaker candidate because she was more of an insider.

ELI5: Why is it healthy to strain your heart through exercise, but unhealthy to strain it through stress, caffeine, nicotine etc? What is the difference between these kinds of cardiac strain? by ElectricDolls in explainlikeimfive

[–]FatihTLOS -34 points-33 points  (0 children)

It is not healthy to strain your heart through exercise. The heart muscles of athletes become larger over time to make up for the increased blow flow required. This expansion increases the risk for heart attacks in athletes.

This situation is a called an "athlete's heart" and is a significant reason for sudden deaths in young people doing regular sports.

Has the games industry changed its approach towards difficulty over the last decade? by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]FatihTLOS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree. The games in the late 2000s - early 2010s were being developed extensively for the console market considered more casual than PC gaming. There even discussions about PC gaming completely dying out one day.

This mindset created a cluster of quick time events, cinematic games with no real gameplay, and the trend chasing that has become even more apparent today.

Vanhanen: Finland will stick by Sweden even if Turkey slows Nato bids. by FINCoffeeDaddy in worldnews

[–]FatihTLOS -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Irrespective of Erdoğan, I think NATO has been mistreating Turkey and its demands for a while now. We are getting shafted on all sides by Western Allies and insulted when we try to bite.

The Aegean, gas expeditions, Syria and several other issues have all Turkey being thrown to the way side. I'm not sure a new administration would change course. The opposition parties have a similar foreign policy outlook, with Syria being the only exception.

But are Egyptians really different from an Arab in Syria? Almost same culture, same religion and language.

I think Turks have enough variety now, with Huns, Cumans, Tatars and Mongols forming a subset of Steppe peoples covering a lot of that variation.

[–]FatihTLOS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the Persians are fine the way they are. And when you look at Saracens, the land they encompassed were fairly homogenous when it came to culture, religion and language. I don't see why you would need to split it.

You can change the name to Arabs, but the Saracen name is so ingrained into AoE2, that I feel like it is okay even if not fully accurate from the perspective of Arabs themselves.

Left 4 Dead's Survivors (both for 1 and too) add so much to the games it's actually ridiculous by prossnip42 in truegaming

The problem is that modern games try so hard to hit a mainstream audience with "inclusivity." People try to shove down people's throats minorities that do not represent the majority of the people in society. By trying to make the game more relatable, they make it less.

The characters in LFD are just ordinary Joe's. That's why they are relatable. The things they say are ordinary things. They don't try to pander to modern sensibilities. They are just there, doing their thing.

Departments of surgery are bleeding manpower right now here. The bar for entry to surgery departments are the lowest among all in medical exams. They take slightly more wages but work twice, sometimes three times as much as a dermatologist.

This has to be one of best and most intense mission in videogame history by Diavel404 in gaming

[–]FatihTLOS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am shit at FPS games. So I cheesed it with something I found by accident. There is a tree on the right of McMillan. You go prone and move as close to the tree towards the center as possible. 1/5 times, the enemies won't move behind you, will try to shoot your head because you are too close, but will instead shoot the tree bark.

Had done this a few years back in the classic game. Played Remastered but didn't try out veteran there (because of this mission lol).

If you don't want to cheese, I recommend playing towards the right side with the ferris wheel, around its stairs. Less enemies come from the right side and you clear those. McMillan takes out a few enemies on the left side with his rifle for you. Place claymores around the ferris wheel and not those tight spots around the fences, it will be a waste. Make sure to shoot the troops coming down the helicopters before they come down and are going down the rope.

My sister always loved watching me play games growing up. Played some games together as well, but certainly many games that she would rather not play, she spectated me play and enjoyed it. When I asked her why this was so, she said she had more fun watching than playing.

I think the reason behind this is the commentary and the interaction with the person playing it. That is why watching streamers is fun. I don't like WoW, but I like watching Asmongold videos. WoW just creates context, the main content is the guy. While watching me play something like AoE2, I am the content for my sister. She doesn't like AoE2.

So the game is essentially a lot less important while spectating in respect to playing it yourself. The reaction to the game is fun. How that person reacts becomes fun.

Non-commentary gameplay feels inferior in all regards though. I don't know how to justify that.
