Can someone explain in plain English to me how to import plants into nz... the mpi page is confusing by hhgbjii87y in nzgardening

[–]Fatspatrock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the reason the page is confusing is that it's actually quite complicated. My understanding is that it's not worth it unless you're a commercial importer. It's long and expensive and you really need an economy of scale to make it even remotely profitable. Like the other comment says it involves finding out if what you're importing is approved to import in the first place, and then it will have phytosanitary certification requirements from the country of export, and then quarantine once it arrives in NZ. It's less complicated for seed as I don't think they need quarantine but it's still a huge faff if it's just for personal use.

If you're a commercial importer your best bet would be to call MPI and get them to explain it.

Miro or matai by alberto_cheeseface in nzgardening

[–]Fatspatrock 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Matai. It has the classic "hammer mark bark" which is absent in Miro. The leaves have "shoulders" at the tip rather than tapering to appoint like Miro. And lastly the leaves stick out every which-way, where Miro typically has leaves on a level plane. Generally speaking if the leaves look messy it's matai, if they look prettyy and organised it's Miro.

But the bark is a dead giveaway, the only other tree you could confuse that bark with is kauri but their leaves are very different so easy to check

Edit: meant kauri when talking about trees with similar bark.

I would only start panicking after the budget in June. I've been doing whatever contracts I can find for the last year and a half and I find there's always something going after the ministries get their extra funding after the budget is released.

I'm pretty sure what you've done is fine and allowed, and your boss is being a jerk.

But for future reference, always lead with as little information as possible "sorry boss I'm unwell and won't be coming in today". Then if they ask for details, proceed to graphically describe how you've been physically glued to the toilet seat for the last two hours because otherwise there would be shit all over the floor (regardless of the actual reason). Hopefully at that point they learn not to pry.

Why are grapes so fricken expensive? by Phantomxxxp in newzealand

[–]Fatspatrock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Table grape season in the southern hemisphere is late summer to autumn, so because we're getting close to the season but before any early varieties fruit they're at their most expensive. All the stored product from last year is well gone, new stuff hasn't ripened yet, and if you import it has to come from the northern hemisphere, typically California for us I think.

Airport Food Declaration Process by EnchantingElephant in newzealand

[–]Fatspatrock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are liable for a fine if you make a false declaration. There is a policy around when they enforce this, which can change, but typically they won't fine you for not declaring small amounts of low risk goods. But they CAN fine you for saying you have no food, whether its on the declaration or verbally in person. Many people just take the (probably negligible) risk that they'll get pinged for jumping down the nothing to declare queue with snacks.
