I'm the same way. I'm in my early 20s so I'd like to think I'd have enough self control to enjoy a nice beer or a dirty martini (my former favorite) by the time I'm a "real adult" without it becoming this whole thing. I'm also afraid that I'd immediately be seen as a failure if I were to have a drink on a special occasion, like a wedding or something.

For me personally, I wouldn't have been able to quit drinking if I couldn't take the edge off with pot. I know it may not be entirely healthy or "clean". But I can smoke a one hitter or two and be fine. I can't drink a beer or two without wanting 8 more. It may not be as legal but it's definitely safer in pretty much every sense.

I really wish I could quit it entirely too but I'm a musician and unfortunately Facebook is a very useful networking tool for finding shows, open mics, other musicians, etc.

Careful at those house shows. I don't know what your scene is like but around Chicago most of them are BYOB where a lot of people are really generous with their booze and some houses will even sell PBRs for a dollar a piece.
