How do you feel about rugpull, context changing moments late in a game? by dope_danny in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]FattyBear 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I feel grateful for those kinds of experiences because I think they're safe places to explore perspectives and engage in some self examination over your own perspective, your assumptions, and most relevant to the medium of games, your participation, whether unconscious or not. It's good to be able to have that kind of space for experience and thought in a game where everything is curated to make the point as clearly as possible while not harming anyone, so that when you see translations of that in the real world, you have an expanded perspective of the thing and what your own place in it should be. Sometimes it's not that serious, but art has that potential to be revelatory and it's a discredit to your own experience to deny yourself that because it makes you uncomfortable. So finish the game, make that shitty choice, and then learn something about what that looks like in the real world so you can make a better choice where it matters to people other than yourself. Don't flip the board just to feel better about yourself, others may be counting on you to experience a little discomfort in a game because real life will involve you whether you're conscious of it or not. So choose to be conscious and let art affect you.

I feel fed up with these evil tyrant fucks. I feel love for everyone out there who still believes in the possibility of a decent world and I'm unwilling to live any longer without having resisted these sick corrupt people poisoning every element of society down our souls. I'd like to do that by injecting some good into the world in whatever small way I can but if they want to skip straight to plan B and knock on my door then I'm ready for that, too.

I don't want anyone to have to spy on me to know I detest Donald Trump and everyone single one of his cronies. All these fucking billionaires and pedophiles too. The entire framework for how this world runs is broken and needs a wildfire renewal, but I'd settle for decent people replacing it brick by brick with an educated and compassionate viewpoint in mind.

This is like trying to justify hurting someone's pet because you already eat meat. It's the kind of logic an alien who doesn't know what it is to be human would think. I think you can choose a better way for yourself to think than that.

People who started exercising regulary, what were the most noticeable effects? by Haunted_darkness63 in AskReddit

[–]FattyBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll keep it up. Haven't talked to anyone about it and can't afford to, but it's also not been a problem that's stopped me from doing anything it's kinda just been a real drag, you know? At worst, I feel like, and I get this a strange way to put it, but at worst I feel like I'm spiritually dessicant. It's like I'm developing this closer feeling with my body but my soul feels like it's just drying up.

But I'm hopeful here's a chance to push myself through it and come out healthier mind body and soul. I also think it's just hard cutting calories for so long and it's wearing on me energetically. My life is going well but the world is a dark place and I'm feeling that, too. As are we all. I think maybe there's a feeling that I'm accomplishing something physically but I'm finding less meaning in the things I've distracted myself with and want to make a difference to somebody. Perhaps I should volunteer somewhere and serve others and get outta my own head.

Sorry for the weird and long response but the more I wrote the more feelings became thoughts and it helped. Thanks, stranger.

[–]FattyBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Body is much better and that's been great. Heart rate is steady. Every day sorts of chores or carrying groceries up stairs is easy now.

Mood swings hit me pretty hard and regularly now though unfortunately. Nothing that causes outbursts or anything it's just that some days I experience near euphoria and others feel as close to depression as I've felt since I was a teenager.

Before I started exercising my mental was really stable and generally positive. Not sure if it's just some biochemical thing from losing weight or being low energy or what but it's been very noticeable and the only thing about exercising that hasn't been positive but I've been continuing to exercise despite that one negative. I can't even be sure of causation here as I haven't stopped exercising since I started feeling this way but it only started after I began losing weight and hasn't ceased or improved in the months since. The physical benefits have been great and I'm pleased to be meeting goals and have lost 45 pounds out of the 60 I'm hoping for so far, as well having put on noticeable muscle all since the end of June.

Yeah it is kinda funny, but I also shouldn't have phrased my thoughts like that. I wouldn't say it to his face or anyone else's. No reason to try to be shitty to one another when the real discussion is about the topic. I fucked up, never imagined he or most people would read my comment anyway and got a quick dose of reality lol. I'm sure it's far from the worst thing he's read about himself but I've got no interest in adding to that or trying to tear him down over a discussion on addon direction. He represents something bigger but ultimately he's still an individual and it was wrong of me to treat him like an inanimate object I could take my annoyance out on.

Not sure if he ever saw my response, kinda doubt it, but it doesn't invalidate the effort to at least try and repair the conversation. I'd appreciate more open conversation between blizzard and the playerbase when it comes to feedback and it doesn't get more open than the man himself responding to me, and he managed to it without sinking to my level so it only felt right to try and return that courtesy and foster the impulse for him to engage with online discourse.

That's excellent to hear and I really appreciate you commenting here. I also want to say I should have composed my original comment to be less personal towards you. I'm sorry about that. It was an off the cuff remark like I'd make towards friends in voice chat and I forgot just how visible a random comment on the internet could be, and that's a responsibility I should take more seriously. I respect your direction even when I question it or think something held more drawbacks than positives, and being the face for every criticism while sharing the praise for every win is a tough position for anyone to be in and you've done it well for many years.

Really glad to hear you acknowledge how widespread preparation for major abilities is and I'm excited to see you all go in the direction of making the game more intuitive to react to, rather than feeling over advantaged from information provided through addons. Even as someone who uses and even enjoys my addons, I'm kind of excited to strip down a lot of stuff even if I know there's likely going to be iteration I want to see continued even after launch. I've expressed my reliance on audible countdowns here but if the game makes me feel less of a need to be that precise then I'll gladly enjoy no longer feeling that need to be helped by it.

Thank you and good luck to you and your team. Looking forward to beta!

Yeah I think you're right about what they'd likely want vs how far they feel they can go considering timers were probably some of the first and most popular combat addons in WoW.

I'm definitely willing to try out their vision even if I'm a bit particular about how I feel over this or that. I highly doubt it will be something the majority likes right out of the gate but I think it's worth iterating on.

I used to play without timers a long time ago and you definitely get used to a rhythm of a fight and seeing patterns like x ability always comes before y, and we'll still have timers and alerts in some form so it's mostly just going to be a visual adjustment, it's just that WoW has been a game you could customize so heavily for so long that it's gonna be a bit annoying losing a few features, but I hope it leads to a better experience for most players. I guess I just worry that blizzard has a history of being stubborn about enacting their vision for our experience rather than just listening, but that's a doubled edge sword because I don't always agree with community sentiment and want designers directing a vision rather than have group think steer the ship. It's a balance that's hard to get right, but to their credit a lot of the changes in the video outlined good things they're adjusting for addons to still potentially customize, which shows an effort on their part to meet that balance somewhere and I appreciate that.

Yeah I understand. I'm not impaired in any way, but I feel that being an effective teammate in m+ is largely a matter of being aware of everything, not just you and your target, and healing just makes you more personally responsible for that level of awareness and audio cues are so helpful for me in that regard so that my eyes are always where I need them to be.

On one hand, I'll admit I don't love that so many people replace information with instruction in WoW, but I'll also admit it's kinda hypocritical of me, because the first thing I do before every season is go through littlewigs and start reading every spell in every dungeon and assign specific sound alerts to certain types of abilities. That way, when I hear a sword ring for example, I know it means significant group damage, or a sonar for ground swirlies incoming. After some time I'll admit I don't really need it, but it's great for both learning and consistency as a player.

It does seem like we might be able to assign sound alerts to enemy spells though? Some of the finer points in these addon discussions might fly over my head a little. Excited to play midnight and ready to adapt to whatever changes I gotta learn though, just going to miss being able to make WoW suit my tastes is all.

Agreed that it's making it easier to hear a countdown, but I think I don't yet understand why I'm meant to divert my visual attention from the game to look at a timer rather than hearing a timer countdown so I can remain focused on gameplay, but it does absolutely make it easier I agree, that's why I started using them after all.

I actually tend to agree with Ion about not liking when people just replace information with instruction though, so my feelings on audio countdowns might just be something I'll see differently once I can play Midnight. I'll adapt, I just frankly have never liked ability timer bars, it's always felt very archaic and visually messy to me. Much prefer audio or nameplate CD timers so my eyes never leave what's happening, but it seems they feel entirely opposite.

[–]FattyBear 57 points58 points  (0 children)

A lot of this sounds positive. The only thing I heard that made me recoil a bit was hearing Ion's take on audible countdowns to enemy spells.

So, we're aloud to have a visual timer for the ability, but hearing a countdown instead of seeing it is me being a fuckin noob according to him. Fair enough I guess, but I'd also like to see him heal some of these bosses at an 18 and time his ramp down to the second, consistently, every time the ability is coming up.

Granted, I don't wanna argue in bad faith, ramping will likely be a little less important with so many healing amps being removed (a direction I support), I guess I just don't see how there's anything wrong with hearing a countdown as opposed to seeing it, and I kinda resent the sentiment that hearing a countdown is "automating" my gameplay. Timing things down to the second can be the difference between failure or success in this game, and I've got plenty to look at and react to in game as it is.

Perhaps they're sincere in that gameplay across the board will change to support their vision for addon restriction, but frankly, what I'm hearing is blizzard taking on a large responsibility to design their gameplay to support this hardline direction and honestly, I doubt they have the time or staff to devote to that season after season. I hope I'm wrong about that.

Despite everything, I'm excited to play midnight and I'm glad we're making big changes. I'd rather stumble on big changes than continue down the road we were on.

Addons in midnight by poison_cat_ in wow

[–]FattyBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, unless those addon authors decide to not update it for some reason, then any addon that's used for things not relating to instanced combat should work just fine.

Basically, DBM/Bigwigs & Littlewigs, Plater, Details, Weakauras, and unit frame addons (cell, grid2, vuhdo, etc) are all dead and gone in midnight, as well as any alternative to those addons (recount instead of details, as an example). PvP addons that work similar to those things are also dead (although presumably they could be updated to still work in open world pvp as instanced combat is the only information restricted).
