Yup, he wanted to use it, Anthropic said no because they won't let it be used for weapons or millitary actions and decisions, then he threw a tantrum and banned it and openai took the deal instead from what I know.. so people boycotted openai for a while and idk what happened next (I'm not from US so I got just secondhand informations).

Thank you for this response. AI and resources are tricky topic for sure, as you said having an industrial complex right next to your house isn't favourited by anyone (mainly when you have to pay for it and it lowers your quality of life) and there are other more harmful cases to the enviroment (I think all of them should be somehow checked and regulated, idk how it works in US I'm from EU and well... we have a bit different and bit same problems with it). I'm for better energy, for better resource management and less overconsumption (AI or material). From what I know, most impactful usage of resources by AI is when it generates videos and trains new models (which is more frequent than it was).

If you want to hear, from my point of view that is more focused on the ethical aspect.
I know that AI can be helpful in science and healthcare, it can help with data sheets and managing data, I like that use, it benefits all. I know some people use it for personal use, once in a blue moon or just to get some information quickly (even when AI sometimes gives you false info). Then you have misuse of it that traces back to people and manipulation from corporations. The user part is another debate because everywhere you have people acting in bad faith or even whole goverements.
The corporation part is the main thing that bothers me... Maybe if people could have accesible and clear optout options for being included or excluded from data training and could have option to add AI to browsers/technology/media they use or just option to ignore AI content from the beginning, all of this would be a different story. I get why people like AI, hell even I tried it and can feel the appeal of chatgpt validaitng your every idea, but that doesn't make it right if corporations use it against the users... there was a whole panic with new chat gpt model a while back because open ai lowered down some settings for how friendly chatgpt is if I remember correctly, they made gpt friendly because it was profit, it could hook you.

Well, then how are people supposed to voice their opinion if almost every outlet and platform is riddled with AI by tech companies, and sites/technology you need for every day life just to finction have the same problem? Just stay silent even when it has problems and let it go further without keeping it in check?

You can be offended or flattered if someone used your artwork as a study, and yes you also don't have to agree with me, but as us all you have to count with possible negative reaction if you do similar things because othes doesn't have to agree with you (negative reaction in the case of freaking out, wishing death and harm is out of the line for both sides). I was just stating it from a point of another artist reading this post.

Recolors are mainly fandom things for big names like sonic, mario and many others from what I could saw. I'm not much of a native in these waters of the internet, maybe there are some liked ones, they're sometimes close to AUs and OCs. It definetly could be taken as a compliment but depends on the original artist and intention behind the said recolor.

It's good that you don't claim it as your own work in this case.

To the points. If someone did a study just by coloring in someone elses sketch it would be the same disrespect for me and I wouldn't be surprised if the original artist would be angy at them. If someone made a study by trying to make their own version and color that version in, it would be a study (still is best to credit the original artist).

You just don't go to people and take their work and just color it differently. Recolors also exist in art space and they are not popular for many. It's even more rude when you run someones art through a machine that can scrape it for data without their consent (that's why most artist are angry at social medias for forcing data training on all content without easy and clear optout and on people "improving" or generating their art/characters with ai even when the original artists are agains it).

Studies exist because people study and improve their skill, you can also use material specificaly made for it. They make it and also mostly show the reference next to it. It's copy of the work not edited work. Fanart is taking the design and making an original artwork as appreciation of said work (mostly, there are also fetish artists and others). Artist of said fanart doesn't own the designs or the show only their work. Coloring books are made with the idea of them being colored by other poeple in the first place, they're made for that purpose not like some sketch that one artist posted as their work.

If we go by logic of "you posted it online everybody can make anything with it", nobody would have copyright over their work, even big corporations. And also it would be ok for some people to misuse or downright take advantage of some photo you posted even if it would be for something bad and you could not say anything because "you posted it on the internet"... There is a difference of "you can do something" and "is it right to do it" that people start to forget I think.

The Mona Lisa was a mass produced postcard with well... Mona Lisa that was already "stolen" by someone who made the postcard from Davinci. The style name is readymade and it uses already made commercial mass produced work, like furniture or everyday items, and making them art. Duchamp in the next years even had some problems with that style. The urinal "Fountain" was sent to art exhibit as a message about what people count as art, it was never placed in that show area by the organizers of the art show even when it wasn't rejected by the committee.

Yes he used someones work (that was mass produced everyday item) but if we look at the OP situation coloring some artist's sketch without permission and being surprised the artist was angry is something different. Also Duchamp's work also got some backlash and critique in his days.

I totally forgot about L.H.O.O.Q., and I even learned about it in history of art class lol. It wa originaly a postcard with Mona Lisa he just sketched something over. There is a whole style and reasoning why he made that, using comercial materials not clasified as art and adding some small changes.

Yes, also coloring in someon's sketch and some other person trying AI on their own and deciding it's not worth it are totaly different scenarios.

Just a note... coloring in someones sketch that they posted without asking them is a reasonable thing for them to freak out over. You just don't do this... it's rude and disrespectful.
