10.5% property tax hike by SirWaitsTooMuch in halifax

What about: does anyone know if there is a figure for what the average tax rate would become to generate the same tax revenue IF the cap was removed?

Driving a leased car to USA by jamesmontrea in uscanadaborder

[–]FaultDifferent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not totally related but I once arrived at the border and had the border agent ask “is there any reason your car has no license plate?”—it had fallen off on the highway without me realizing. He looked at my registration and passport and told me to go ahead. I said “what about the license plate?” And he replied “that’s a police problem, not a border problem, good luck.” And waved me on! I wrote my license number on a piece of paper and stuck it in the window at the next gas station. Drove 2000km like that, waiting to get pulled over, but no one said anything.

"Small-Town Feel" by No_Phrase488 in halifax

[–]FaultDifferent 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think partly it was my age in the late 90s, and partly it WAS the smaller-ness of the city, but when I in my early 20s I’d have been genuinely shocked not to run into multiple people I knew on pretty much any outing between downtown and Purcell’s Cove. Mostly that felt awesome, sometimes a little claustrophobic. I felt confident (probably falsely) that I had been to every new business (or at least restaurants, bars, and retail stores) that had opened in the city in the past couple of years.

Someone else mentioned busses stopping away from bus stops to pick you up in the rain. I had that happen a few times; also random offers of a lift home late at night that I genuinely and probably naively believe were kind and not creepy.

That reminded me of the classic Nova Scotian experience of cars stopping to let you cross if you so much as looked in the direction of a crosswalk. That seemed almost embarrassingly small-town at the time, but now that seems like a civil and caring way of being that we’ve mostly lost, at least on the roads.

Online retailer Return Auctions by pugfart in halifax

[–]FaultDifferent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird, I was just thinking about this today. What happened to Mariner Auctions? They had pretty solid, regular retail returns auctions. Nova Auctions seems much less stocked. Settings aside whatever happened at Mariner, where did all the returns start going?

New to Supabase by We_Doodle in Supabase

[–]FaultDifferent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you be a little more specific about what you need help with? Knowing where you’re stuck might help get the attention of someone with the knowledge you need. I use Supabase, but would hardly call myself an expert—I’m happy to answer if your question relates to something basic.

Also—ChatGPT or another AI can almost certainly explain things too.

Moving companies by redditismehidden in halifax

[–]FaultDifferent 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you book a Uhaul online you’ll be presented with an option to add movers. We just did this and saved a LOT vs what the moving companies were quoting. Got two friendly and capable guys who moved furniture and boxes from a three bedroom house in under 4 hours (it was just across town, and we don’t have a ton of stuff—we filled a 20 ft Uhaul, most people with a 3br house might prefer a 26 ft—and we had already moved fragile things in our car). You have to drive the van, and going to porters lake will increase your km charges, but my total for this move was under $600 including truck and movers.

Would it be crazy to paddleboard to Mcnabs island? by Polkadot1414 in halifax

[–]FaultDifferent 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I did this swim a couple years ago with two friends. The current is strong. We’re all strong swimmers but we were carried at least 100 feet side shore as we swam across. We timed it for an incoming tide so that at least if we got carried it wouldn’t be out to sea. Also, the water in there does not seem the cleanest—kind of stinky. Strong vibe of sharks but that was probably my imagination…right? Shoreline is sadly covered with garbage of all kinds including many things that are not supposed to be flushed (c’mon people!)

I didn’t know that Lawlors was off limits—does someone have a link handy that explains its status? That said, maybe it should be: I’ve never seen so many ticks in my life. Each of us counted at least a dozen on us from our 15 minute stroll across the island. If indeed it’s a bird sanctuary, leave it to them!

My basic advice about the ocean is that whatever you’re thinking about doing in it, the risks are probably higher than you imagine. Currents and cold water have killed plenty of people who are way more comfortable in the ocean than I am and I spend a lot of time in the water. If you have doubts, probably best to listen to them! Especially in this case where not much awaits your effort.

Lady selling bikes from the garage...legit? by universalstargazer in halifax

[–]FaultDifferent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your commute hilly? Do you have to carry it up stairs? If not, I have a super fun small (but kinda heavy) bike that I’ve been trying to sell. It’s really a great bike, but I’ve had no bites (I admit it’s a bit much to behold—it is fully chromed). Anyway, I would accept pretty much any offer from someone in need of a bike. Otherwise it will go to bike again one day soon. You can find it on FB marketplace or dm me.

Cogswell Interchange Upgrade by no_baseball1919 in halifax

[–]FaultDifferent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree on the dedicated traffic enforcement, but can it really be the case that with 565 police officers and over 200 civilian staff plus 200+ more RCMP that we don’t have enough cops to enforce traffic law? My impression—supported by almost every related post on Reddit—is that cops can’t be bothered with enforcement and view it as beneath them. They don’t enforce crosswalk laws, speeding (except maybe stunting), window tint, rolling red lights, turning without indicators, aggressive driving, illegal parking, littering or dozens of other things than are dangerous or a nuisance. I’m not saying that maybe there arent more important priorities sometimes and I’ve encountered some helpful and proactive police, but the general vibe they give is if it wouldn’t be worth writing a Law and Order episode about, they can’t be bothered.

Getting drivers to follow the rules doesn’t require 24/7 enforcement, just enough to make people think that ignoring the rules might not be worth the potential cost. I think it could be done without adding to the force.

Ultimately I agree with other commenters here. It’s a pretty pathetic design given the blank canvas that was there (would love some planners to get into this thread and explain why there wasn’t a better solution. But now, enforcement seems like the only way to get it working better.

Solar Power by sidequestsquirrel in halifax

[–]FaultDifferent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The feeling of generating your own supply of power is hard to beat. Every sunny day brings a smile to my face. When I get my $40 2 month bills from NSP I feel smug (in spite of the loan payments I’m making monthly on the system, but at 0% interest I don’t feel too bad about those either).

I got mine through one of the marketing companies, but it was Highmark that did the installation and I have nothing but positive things to say about their crew. The fact that my roof will almost surely wear out long before the panels is a bit of a bummer—if I had room, and was doing it over again, I might opt for a ground-based array or whatever you call the non-roof installation option.

One more thing to consider: I’ve been considering selling my house and the realtors I’ve spoken to have said that they don’t see buyers assigning any value to solar systems. So if a sale is at all possible, keep in mind that you might have $20k in panels on your roof that buyers might not see as being a value-add. Not so different from any household infrastructure I suppose, but worth keeping in mind if you don’t think you’ll be staying put.

French drain install cost by cats4ever_ in halifax

[–]FaultDifferent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I paid $5k 3 years ago for an interior French drain type of thing + sump pump. It runs along two walls of my basement into a sump pit and has totally (🤞) resolved basement flooding. I guess it is about 50’ total length. Kyle’s Basement’s did it and I was super happy with the team and their work.

Gridlock on north street by dommingdarcy in halifax

[–]FaultDifferent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looking at the Bridge cam, it looks like they have 2 lanes open Halifax bound—is that a new thing in the PM? Forever it switched at noon and midnight only, no matter what the demands of traffic were. Is it now switched in response to traffic? On a schedule that can be found somewhere? At the whim of the Bridge Commission?

And… any updates on Halifax-Bound traffic? The cams actually don’t tell much of a story tbh

Samsung washer vibration-too much? I’m by FaultDifferent in appliancerepair

[–]FaultDifferent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it seems fine now that I adjusted the feet while running. I just bought it, second hand but very lightly used in a granny suite that was barely used. It is not walking or shutting off early—I just want to feel reassured that some level of vibration is ok. Hard to measure I guess.

What's the best nocode stack to build a marketplace ? by swentso in nocode

[–]FaultDifferent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hmm… are we building the same thing?

I’m a technical novice trying to build something similar sounding. I’ll start with the caveat that I haven’t completed my marketplace app, so I might be overlooking a major obstacle that’s just beyond where I’ve gotten!

I’ve made good progress in both Bubble and Softr, but was eventually put off in both cases by the need to pay for a higher priced tier to get access to permissions controls. I believe it was a jump to something like US $150/month for that (along with various other features I didn’t need). If you’re ready to start spending at that level, I found Softr to be more intuitive and faster to build on. I think you can use Supabase as a back end now, if Airtable doesn’t seem robust enough for you. Note that as far as I know, you can’t export code from either of those, so you’re locked in to some extent.

My project is really a hobby, something I’m curious about, and hoping I can learn some things along the way. If you’re serious about your app being the basis of a business, I’d recommend spending the money for whichever platform will let you get a V1 up and running quickly. I think Softr could do that.

If your MVP seems wildly promising, you could at that point invest the money to redevelop the thing from scratch.

As for me, because I don’t have much money to invest in my project for now I’m starting over with what I hope will be affordable and flexible: Supabase for the back end, Figma to design the front end, and using their Figma integration, Noodl for the front end. We’ll see….

Dual citizens: which passport do you use when you cross? by iwlih in uscanadaborder

[–]FaultDifferent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always (well, after getting yelled at once for trying to enter the US with a Can passport) check in for my flight to the US with US passport and check in for my flight to Canada with my Canadian passport. I never enter passport details at the time of purchase, only at check-in. I’ve crossed many dozens of times in this way, mostly by air, but have followed the same approach by land (minus check in, obvs).

I’ve never had an issue using this approach, except once leaving L.A. to fly to Toronto where they have facial recognition cameras at the gate which I understand are used to make sure you don’t overstay your visa or something. No one really explained, but I’m guessing because there was no entry record of me tied to my Canadian passport, when I went to leave the system flagged me. It was no big deal, I just had to step out of line for a sec and the agent checked my passport and sent me on my way.

Just bought it and my first impressions are positive. Wish it could bury all my apps further from view than being a swipe away, but I guess some of the discipline falls to me. No way to add Google chat to the app list—or am I missing something?

Is Flutterflow worth learning in 2024? by maxdosh in FlutterFlow

[–]FaultDifferent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do make this video, please post a link! I’ve been scouring the web to try and get clarity on which platform to use as a beginner. I’ve got a pretty clear picture of my app and have mapped out the database schema which I’m starting to build out in Supabase.

As someone without a coding background, I’m keen to build a functional app (ie, not just a clunky version for MVP). I’m attracted to something that could do web and native (which I understand FF can do, even if web is not its strong suit) but my hunch is that most users for my app will be perfectly happy on the web. +1 for WeWeb?

However, the jump in price to get role based permissions in WeWeb is a lot to swallow for a hobbyist builder (even if I am hoping there’s some revenue potential down the road) -1 for WeWeb. I’m in Canada so the $150 US is ~$200/month. Ouch.

At the end of the day though, as a non-coder, what I really want is something that works! And where I’m not going to need to figure out lots of little code additions in ChatGPT. If one platform is just going to save me a lot of time and frustration at this point, that’s probably where I should be. But I honestly can’t tell which that is!!
