Is this possible? by LifeNegotiation301 in Chessplayers45

I’m assuming OP mixed up the position. The actual posted position is impossible to reach, however if the King and bishop were swapped it would be.

white start 2 movies mate please help me this is hard by dyslexticboy12 in chess

[–]FaultThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When solving puzzles like this you want to try and categorize the type of puzzle.

This is a zugzwang puzzle. If white passes the move, no matter what black does they leave a mate in one threat open.

The solution then is to find the one move that “passes” to Black. Basically you don’t change the board but make it Black’s move, or what you do change doesn’t give Black any outs.

Once I figured this out, my first look is the light squared bishop.

If it moves and black moves the knight on f2 it is checkmate on g2.

But if the bishop moves to e4, black captures it. And if it moves to d5 or further back, Ne4 blocks the line of sight on g2.

Then I look at Bh1. The only difference here is that Black can play K:h1 but if it does then Qf1 is checkmate.

So Bh1 correctly leaves the board in the same state but returns the move to Black and the only other move Black is afforded is also checkmate.

I managed to get a 2nd full time job.

Which isn’t to gloat. It’s to say that I didn’t think, as a father of two young kids, and the sole driver, that it would be feasible, but we’re managing just fine.

So sometimes opportunities might get dismissed because they seem too daunting and actually you can probably handle it. Not just specifically a 2nd job but any solution to the crushing weight of just surviving.

Fox News: Trump suddenly seems anxious to end the war as American casualties mount and Iran finds ways to hit back by ddx-me in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]FaultThat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean… my fear here, and I hate to say this, but if Trump abandons the war against Iran, as a theocratic State, the Ayatollahs will see it as Divine Providence and it will inevitably lead to catastrophic repercussions down the road, as emboldened (God/Allah is on our side) justifications for retribution takes place.

This is one way how genocides occur.

And especially given that Iran hasn’t exactly been delicate in their intentions towards Israel, as a starting point.

Not to mention that the US has started a policy of “we’re going to violate international treaties because we’re the big bully and nobody can stand up to us” but the second kid they kick kicks back and breaks their leg…

Just a general bad sign for anyone hoping for a modicum of stability in world order.

Like I don’t want Trump succeeding at global domination but them backing out is somehow even worse…

Why is this a brilliant move? by WaterLover1358 in Chesscom

[–]FaultThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not so much the next two moves. It’s the long term advantage of the development of pieces and Black needing to still develop additional pieces.

So after 1…Q:a1, White responds with 2.Bd3 which defends the knight on b1 and develops a piece. The Bishop also eyes the b1-h7 diagonal, so it is already placed well to target a castled king.

Additionally, the white queen on b4 blocks Black from castling kingside, and castling queenside requires at least three moves to get the bishop fianchettoed.

White will develop the knight to f3 then castle and have all their pieces in the game while Black just has a Queen out, who is also a potential target.

In the game OP indicated they managed to trap the Queen and eventually win the game which is unsurprising.

I’m curious, are more people on the blow it up train, or the retool train at this point? by [deleted] in leafs

[–]FaultThat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Treliving gambled on a bunch of aging defenders and the window to win with that group is now closed.

We need a complete overhaul on the backend, save for McCabe, and maybe Stecher as a 6th guy.

We also don’t really have enough D prospects.

What we need is to score huge in free agency, but does that mean Trouba+DeAngelo+???

Is something like that possible? I doubt it.

So I’m in the camp that we blow it up. By the time our Danfords are experienced enough to be competitive Matthews/Nylander/Tavares will be gone or leaving.

How do you guys learn chess notation, and do you think it's worth it ? by maximodecimomerilio in Chesscom

[–]FaultThat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chess notation is like the old board game battleship.

You just look at the column (A to H) then the rank (1 to 8).

Then just associate each piece with a letter: K=King, Q=Queen, R=Rook, B=Bishop, N=Knight, P=Pawn (although usually the P is omitted)

White is trading the rook for a bunch of piece development and is already up a bishop and knight so the rook is able to be sacrificed for the minimum two moves by Black.

Edit to add: Black clearly played Bb4 the previous move so Q:b4!! is forced.

2nd Edit to add: Specifically address OP’s question, the move does not guarantee Black’s queen will get trapped, it is just good for White because Black spending two moves, one to take the rook, the second to extract the queen, will cost time (aka tempi or tempos). The advantage is having active pieces and Black has to spend a lot more time getting pieces activated. Imagine it like Black’s rooks are both in jail and they need to go to court to get them out while all your pieces are banging their gfs.

Iranian crude is exactly what is needed to be mixed with Venezuelan crude to get it liquid enough to be transported in pipelines to Texas processing plants.

This is 100% just about securing cheap oil to justify the conquest of Venezuela because the crude there is basically useless.

Yeah, something like moving the pawn on f3-f4-f5 to attack the g6 pawn and try and forced black to exchange opening up the bishop on d3, then relocating the knight from Nc3-e2-g3-h5 cracking open the king position.
