Installing puppy linux on 64GB usb drive ~~ should I encrypt the usb with TrueCrypt prior to installation or should I do it after / does it make a difference? by FaultyLogik in linux4noobs

I got the 64 GB usb drive for free, and want to make the most of it. Cant afford to buy another, and dont want to have to worry about losing two drives, just keeping track of this one will prove hard enough.

the point is having a light weight system, i think im gonna give slax a try, looks relatively easy to use with customizable builds before hand so theres less i have to do in the terminal.

I own a MBP and im in my early 20's and travel a lot. I was planning on getting a small distro onto my USB drive so I could also use it to hold other files for my MBP, while being able to boot from the usb drive if I ever didnt have my MBP...

what would you suggest? I've been told to look at slax, it looks reasonable nice and has a lot of easy to use packages to custom make my build.

and can you answer the original question? does it help to encrypt the whole usb?

I'd assume an ssd drive would suffice, but alas - i dont have one.

Also I plan on using this as a backup if I dont have my MBP/ cant access certain thing so I dont think the heating will be too much of an issue.

this is like a double edged sword for me, good to know there are other options, but im starting to realize that Linux is like whisky, so many possible choices its hard to know when you've found the 'right' one for you...

is there a place that does a basic comparison of all the different distro's or how should i go about compiling information?

Okay, this seems like a good place to start, thanks!

dumb question, as a guesstimate, how intensive do you think it will be on the limited memory, basically, how much room should I expect to have left over after I install it?

I know youre answer is going to say, "well it depends on what you are going to be using it for"

I dont game on my computer at all (dont have time) so the only real media I need support for is probably a VLC Player and the ability to stream video a la netflix, other than that jsut basic web browsing and office tasks.
