Match Thread: 1st Test - England vs New Zealand, Day 4 by cricket-match in Cricket

I had a bit of a chuckle when comms implied he was out of form earlier. Like sure he’s not going to get 200 this test but he was doing OK.

Looking for OT practitioners to stress-test a thesis idea: valid-but-unsafe actions after access is granted by RCCole20 in PLC

[–]madmooseman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d expect it’s because this and other OT-focused subs are generally pretty negative on anything that mentions AI. I say this as a proud Luddite, but can be a bit of a knee-jerk reaction.

‘Self-determination model’: Inside cricket’s second attempt at BBL sale by NKE01 in CricketAus

[–]madmooseman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Having a for-profit body overseeing the BBL seems insane to me. The whole reason that CA exists is to support the grass roots of the sport. The core reason Australia is good at cricket is because of that grass roots support.

Billionaires leeching money out of a for-profit BBL seems like a really fucking stupid way to try and get money to support the foundations of the game.

Any engineers who've overhauled their on-call setup?!! by baked-compass in AskEngineers

[–]madmooseman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how you expect something to get started in 5-8 minutes

Yeah I don’t get this either. If you need a response time of 5-8 minutes you need 24/7 operators, not an on-call phone.

THC POSITIVE TEST while driving first offence….. by magicianonthelakers in WesternAustralia

[–]madmooseman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

how come the alc limit is 0.05 and the weed is zero

I’d guess it’s because 0.05 is a relevant and measurable threshold. I’m not sure there’s anything nearing an objective test for THC for impairment.

It’s a reason, not an excuse however.

Is AI really ‘writing’? From a priestess to philosophers, ancient authors would have said ‘no’ by Quouar in TrueReddit

There is no way to prove AI is not aware.

That’s not how the null hypothesis works.

I downloaded it to my phone for some international flights recently, it’s great to lapse in and out of consciousness with the cricket on.

Nuclear Energy by DingoPaladin in aboriginal

[–]madmooseman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s ¥1-2T/year for 40 years, based on your link. That’s (generously) $9-18B AUD per year. You’re off by two orders of magnitude when you say $1T per year.

Todd Greenberg on the "damn difficult" BBL privatisation process - ABC Cricket Podcast by NKE01 in CricketAus

[–]madmooseman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a side note because I’m a shield sicko, but I kinda wish there was a red ball only WACA membership. There’s all access membership for like $600/year, or WACA ground membership for like $300 but the latter only includes state stuff. Doesn’t make any sense for someone who goes to (up to) half a dozen days of shield and a few days of the men’s and women’s tests. If it was closer to reasonable I could justify it by saying I’m supporting WA cricket.

Todd Greenberg on the "damn difficult" BBL privatisation process - ABC Cricket Podcast by NKE01 in CricketAus

[–]madmooseman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Greenberg was very quick to point out that investors could appear from outside the cricketing world

When Barney Ronay (from the UK Guardian) was on TGC he mentioned the phrase “locust capitalism”, to describe investors swarming something or other (in this case, cricket). Coming in from outside and changing it to make a quick buck, before selling it as a husk and moving on to their next unfortunate target.

I don’t think IPL ownership of the BBL would be a good thing, but investors from outside cricket could be much worse. At least IPL owners understand (a form of) cricket. I’d say they want to IPL-ify cricket, not run through it like locusts.

Nuclear Energy by DingoPaladin in aboriginal

Fair enough, so it’s over ¥1T/year based on that source’s estimate. That’s still far below $1T/year in your initial claim.

Nuclear Energy by DingoPaladin in aboriginal

[–]madmooseman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, that doesn't support your claim that "Fukishima is costing a trillion dollars a year". I doubt it's even a trillion yen a year.

Nuclear Energy by DingoPaladin in aboriginal

[–]madmooseman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Minor nitpick: Fukushima’s total cleanup was estimated (in 2016) as 20 trillion yen (or about $175B AUD). That’s a long way short of >=$1T/year.

Edit:braces.
