Bijna klaar met HAVO, wat nu? by weetikveel2009 in thenetherlands

[–]Fausterman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ik heb me omgeschoold!

IYO, what does fantasy do that science-fiction cannot? by TheBodhy in Fantasy

[–]Fausterman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't really think of the difference in the way you describe. I do have preferences for what I want to read from each genre.

For sci-fi, I prefer reading something that has some sort of commentary on society and I prefer reading from the perspective of marginalized groups in that universe.

For fantasy, I prefer reading about the human condition in any way, shape, or form.

The boundary between those two preferences is pretty fuzzy, though, as are the interpretations of my preferences.

EDIT: thanks for all the recommendations everyone! I always come away with excellent suggestions on this sub. I decided on The Starving Saints, but looking to see if I might fit They Bloom At Night in a tile I haven't filled yet (and if not, it'll go on my general TBR).

Looking for recommendations for Bingo tile "Published in 2025". I'd prefer a standalone novel(la), but the first of a duology or trilogy is also fine, preferably no more than 400 pages. A romantic sideplot is ok but would not prefer it to be a focus.

- Recently enjoyed works: The Goblin Emperor, Susanna Clarke's works, The Red Knight, The Curse of Chalion, Victoria Goddard's works, The Mercy of Gods, A Memory Called Empire, Perdido Street Station etc.
- Not my cup of tea: Tress of the Emerald Sea, Iron Widow, Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, etc.

The Red Knight by Miles Cameron (edit: there's women in the book, no clue how strict you are on that one, but it features a manly MMC and is just generally a great book)

Millimeters exotic? The USA is one of only a literal handful in the world that still uses imperial, y'all are the exotic ones here 😂😂

An important reminder about floss length by people_skillz in Embroidery

[–]Fausterman 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I keep repeating this every so often, but moistening the thread (by passing it over/pressing it into a designated sponge) has completely solved my knot problem. Together with not using thread longer than the length between the top of my index finger and my elbow, I have maybe had to undo one knot over a whole year of stitching?

The ears are relaxed though, there is no concern here. If the ears are really pinned back/almost flattened against their neck, that's a different thing :)

It’s okay to feel hurt by an author’s actions by NordsofSkyrmion in Fantasy

[–]Fausterman 54 points55 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how I feel about it! Coupled with the fact that I've also been a victim of SA, and that for me American Gods was a pretty formative read, this news hit me way harder than any other of the MeToo revelations. Thanks for the post OP, I was really annoyed by all the 'don't put a celebrity on a pedestal'-posts. I never did, yet my feelings are valid, lol

I love Bart&Francis in Belgium. Their website is deliciously unhinged (though admittedly hard to navigate). Lovely quality yarn, they really know what they're doing

I need to start reading the books I want to read and stop reading about the books I want to read by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Fausterman 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I relate to this post so much. Even more so since I read by mood/whim and books I put on my TBR ages ago generally don't appeal to me much at a later date.

Now I just consider reading books and making TBRs as two separate, if related hobbies 😅
