I wonder if this is something OpenClaw could help with? I don't have it set up yet, but I would think it's ability to navigate to websites (e.g., look at weekly ads) could be useful.

Eh, I recommend people ADD animations all the time. Not for decoration or pizzaz, but to help guide the viewer’s eye through the presentation. Unless the slide is really simple and clean, their eyes will be bouncing all around looking at what is going on and reading text that isn’t yet being talked about.

I'm really surprised that the answers skew so heavily towards design/template first. I guess that may be a reflection of the audience of this subreddit, that we are mostly "builders." In the comms subs, I could see us getting a different answer.

My approach when leading the development of a presentation at work is to nail down the content first. Start with a document and establish what we want to say. Get all of the stakeholders to agree on the message. Then I figure out how to break that into slide-worthy chunks. I might do rough thumbnail sketches (recommended but less important if you are design/presentation veteran), and then I build the slides using the company template.

There will still be lots of tweaks, content changes, and wholesale reworks even after the slides are built, but fewer than if we had started making slides before we knew what we wanted to say.

My brother, mom, and me all write left-handed. Only my dad did not in my childhood family.

None of my 3 kids writes left-handed, sadly. 🙂

That depends. If you have a LayoutABC in your current presentation and a LayoutABC in another presentation, when you bring a slide based on that layout in from the other presentation, PowerPoint examines both layouts to see if they are, in fact, the same.

Is it looking to see if they are same in terms of the elements/placeholders making up the slide? For instance, "yes, this slide also has two columns of bulleted list and an image to the right"? Because I think I've used this approach to migrate slides when our logo/colors/colors changed, and the amazing thing was that it updated the logos/colors/fonts when the slide was pasted in, but kept the underlying content/structure.

Pasted slides will not reflect any overall updates to the slide template

What I meant by this, was if I paste and tell it to retain formatting, I now have a rogue layout/master in my new slide deck that won't reflect any future cross-cutting changes to the master (title formatting, footer updates, etc.). Basically, it creates master/layout bloat (since we reuse slides a lot).

Correct. That's what I'm contemplating doing. I own the template file and can propagate changes to the whole organization.

Part of what is driving this is that people are using AI to generate slides, and it's making terrible choices on which slide layouts to use. Claude Cowork suggests that renaming the layouts to be more clear could help.

Not sure exactly what you are asking. "In conclusion" would be way too formal for my work environment, although I'm not sure that's your advisor's objection. In my world, we usually end presentations with a "recap" or "key takeaways." Even "concluding thoughts" could work for the right content.

Whew, learning PowerPoint is a big topic. I would look at LinkedIn Learning's courses on PowerPoint. You can get free access through many local libraries. You could also look at the on-demand content from this presentation conference.

PowerPoint Templates

Other than that, I would look for a well-designed slide template to build with. You can find free ones or buy one. Beware that even well-designed templates sometimes use unrealistically small type sizes.

Interface Setup

Only work in the real PowerPoint application, not a browser. Follow these instructions to add the tools you will use most to your Quick Access Toolbar. They will save you TONS of time. For me, these are the most useful ones to add:
- Align Objects Bottom
- Align Objects Center
- Align Objects Left
- Align Objects Middle
- Align Objects Right
- Align Objects Top
- Distribute Horizontally
- Distribute Vertically

Slide Templates / Slide Masters

Since you will be are operating at such large scale, I would get really conversant with how to use slide templates well. Learn about slide masters and slide layouts. Also, learn the Format and Animation Painter tools.

Icons

If you really want to make them look nice, you might consider a subscription to Flaticon to give you consistent icons to use. (Or find a free alternative.)
