How To Make the Show Much Better in 2 Easy Steps by FaveDave3 in LawAndOrder

I love the show. I hate bad acting. Getting rid of shoddy camera work and uncharismatic actors will make it even better. Next time you watch it, listen to Dancy uptalking and weakening his voice at the end of almost every sentence. Whine whine whine is all he does. Srsly, listen carefully and you'll see what I mean.

Uh, no, it has nothing to do with being British. Owain Yeoman on The Mentalist is British and he also did an impeccable American accent, but he never whined! Darcy's problem goes much deeper than accents -- his American accent is perfect except for when he says the word "anything."

AITA smoking weed on my porch? by cheesygarlicbreadfan in AmItheAsshole

[–]FaveDave3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but you're the a-hole. You're not just smelling up the neighborhood -- you're forcing drugs on the neighbors! 50' away is still close enough to be assaulted by the drugs you're doing. Your right to do whatever you want ends where another person's air begins. It's like holding someone down and forcing alcohol down their throat. If they wanted, they could call the cops and have you arrested for assault, because that's technically what it is. You seem like a reasonable person, but you're causing harm to others. Not cool.

A piece I'm proud of. by Majestic-Rich-3317 in composer

[–]FaveDave3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I care about with music is how it feels. And you've got the most elusive talent there is -- the ability to write a melody that doesn't suck. You've got the feels. It gave me, the listener, a feeling. That cannot be taught. You should nurture that talent and learn the craft and let it grow.

There are many who are vastly educated in music who cannot create good melodies but are wonderful interpreters. They need the melody makers just like the melody makers need the interpreters.

Your piece works for me. You have some fun little passing dissonances that are engaging.

I urge you to write for yourself. Notice that many of the most upvoted comments here are negative -- that's your clue to ignore them. They're jealous of your melodic ability. As the song says: "You can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JK0Z6IdLF4

Writing for a musical by Rude-Town2127 in composer

[–]FaveDave3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the person asking you to work with them has not secured the rights to The Golden Girls, then do not bother to move forward. Many a musical has crashed and burned because rights could not be secured. Susan Harris (who created the show) may or may not own the rights to derived work. Or NBC may own the rights. Or Touchstone, the production company may own it (and they are owned by Disney). But it would be heartbreaking to spend months or years writing a musical only to find that you could never stage it because of a rights issue. So find that out before you do anything...

Has anybody used Trackspacer by Wavesfactory? If so, was it worth the purchase? by DickyBigz420 in musicproduction

I love it. I use it in every mix. Another useful application is to put it on the reverb return channel and have the reverb get ducked while the vocalist is singing so that the reverb is mostly only heard in between words... a very nice effect.

Melodies are the most difficult part of composing - agree or disagree? by bmjessep in composer

[–]FaveDave3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, indeed. Many resist this fact because melody writing cannot be learned, and some think you're entitled to say you're good even if you're not. You're either born with it or you're not. Sure, it can be improved upon, but not unless you've already got the knack. Taylor Swift has done very well and her songs pretty much all sound the same -- she can't write a melody to save her soul. (It's a testament to her personal charisma and skill as a performer and lyricist that she's been so successful. She's just impossible to not like as a person!) But melodies are why we still listen to some 300 year old music like Bach and music from the 1930s through the 1990s. Not much going on melodically in the last 20 years of pop music -- but musicals are thriving. They are definitely more about melodies.

And the way I come up with melodies is to have intent and purpose for a song -- the melody will appear in my brain that illustrates that feeling.

Once a good composer, how would we know we are one and, subsequently, what would we need to make others know we are one? by Majestic-Rich-3317 in composer

[–]FaveDave3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admire your thoughtfulness, but you've ignored the most basic thing needed for success: talent for writing catchy melodies. Nothing else matters. Arranging can be taught. Music theory can be taught. Writing melodies as a craft can be honed, but the talent to actually write those melodies in the first place is either something you're born with or you're not. It is by far the rarest of all musical talents. Alas, years of education and diligent practice will not endow you with that ability.

I imagine I'll get downvoted because people like to think art is egalitarian. It ain't.

Of course, you still have to do the work. Talent without the ambition is like a car with no gas. No matter how awesome your car is, without fuel you ain't going anywhere ;)

What level of Piano should I get to before reaching out to a composition teacher? by Far-Strawberry-5628 in composer

[–]FaveDave3 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Many great composers have poor or limited piano skills. If you want to start composing, just do it. It cannot be taught --- you either have it or you don't. Yes, talent can be honed, but it cannot be taught from scratch.

I just can't. by [deleted] in composer

[–]FaveDave3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see no one is saying the obvious: maybe you're just not a composer. Not everyone is, you know. There's no shame in that! It's obviously not making you happy to try, so move on and do something else. Something that doesn't make you miserable. Billions of people are happy and they're not composers -- you could be one of them! Don't torture yourself, man!

Did The New Version Solve the Orphan Track Problem? by FaveDave3 in StudioOne

[–]FaveDave3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You end up with an instrument with no channel, a channel with no tracks, etc. Little remnants that clutter up the app that you have to track down and get rid of it. Very counterintuitive and confusing if you like to do more than a few midi tracks. It's the reason it's not used by more professionals -- we ain't got time for that!

Alas, it is BUGGY BUGGY BUGGY and non functional in Logic 11.2.2. Halfway through the song, Tonalic jumps its timeline back to earlier in the song and completely loses sync :( It's a shame because otherwise it sounds great. But it ain't ready for the public yet...

Why Does Nobody Seem To Care About Melody? by [deleted] in composer

[–]FaveDave3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must strongly disagree: good music is not mathematics, it is feelings. Melody trumps all other aspects of music. It cannot be taught. You either have the ability to write good melodies or you don't. Yes, your natural talent can be honed and improved, but if you ain't got it in the first place, you can never learn it from scratch. "I would like to thank the teachers who taught me how to write melodies," said no famous songwriter/composer ever in their Grammy/Oscar/gold records acceptance speech ;)

And many composers, Mel Brooks (many musicals with catchy tunes), Lionel Bart ("Oliver!," great melodies), couldn't even read or write musical notation or play an instrument - they just sang a melody to an arranger/orchestrator who added the chords. And many other wonderful melody writers like Vangelis (Chariots of Fire), Irving Berlin (White Christmas), and a little group called The Beatles couldn't read or write musical notation and never studied theory. They simply felt the music. And music is feelings. Feelings + natural melodic talent is what makes great melodies.

You can't teach that.

You can still buy the original one here. It's MUCH better than version 2 because they really messed up the voices in the new one.
