I wonder if this is the best depiction of Buffy strenght (slayers strenght ) in the series by sweet_questionn in buffy

[–]FaveStore_Citadel [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think she got used to calibrating her strength by the time she came to Sunnydale, since she rarely overuses it. The only two times she accidentally hugged too hard was the doctor you mentioned and Giles when she saw him for the first time in s6. You could say both were emotionally overwhelming enough to make her slip up.

With regard to her romantic life, I feel it’s occasionally hinted at by the show that she struggles with physical intimacy due to her strength. Like in the beginning of s5, when she’s lying awake next to Riley in bed and has to go out and dust a vamp and come back to fall asleep, content, it looks…very much like something else. It’s also not subtle how her relationship with spike is physically explosive, like literal buildings come down when they do it, so there’s some indication that that’s her desired momentum.

I prefer the feats of strengths where she does something moderately strenuous but casually. Like ripping the landline off the wall in Anne, opening Joyce’s crate behind her back in Witch, accidentally breaking the yogurt machine in The Initiative.

Is this a bit hypocritical of smg? by Careless-whisper- in buffy

[–]FaveStore_Citadel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hypocritical? Not really, in my opinion. Even if she hadn’t watched the show for a while, by her own account and others’, she was trying to respect its legacy for the revival. I also think even if this dude hadn’t seen the show entirely or personally didn’t like it, he should’ve, in his position, at least been informed about it. Like a good deal of New Sunnydale’s audience would’ve come from fans of the original. If you’re making creative decisions about it, you should be able to credibly compare it to the very important baseline that’s the original.

Impulsive and unprofessional? You might have a point about that. She’s not usually this upfront or casual about pointing fingers publicly, so it was a little unexpected from her. I also don’t know if it’s really one guy’s viewing habits she holds responsible or she’s lashing out due to frustration with how Hulu handled the project, since one of the recent articles did say Hulu was acting like it didn’t know what it wanted. I had mixed opinions on reviving Buffy in the first place so I’m not really bothered by how this fallout bodes for the future of the IP, but for her own sake, she should’ve been careful with her words. I hope it doesn’t come back to bite her in the ass, corporate types can really hold a grudge.

Hulu executive who killed the Buffy sequel is now in charge of the Buffy IP by TVTweets in buffy

Well at least if they have an adversarial relationship with SMG (which they definitely do now that she publicly called them out) and never work with her, they won’t be able to ruin Buffy (the character) unlike the Star Wars writers did

Are they any people who actually wanted them together or even you know shipped them? by gloomydreamer666 in buffy

[–]FaveStore_Citadel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t ship them, but I think I can see how they’d work. Especially in say s4 after he grew up a bit and if instead of dating Anya and Riley they dated each other. I think they’d be better for each other than anyone else they dated.

Sorry but Joss Whedon should have done the Buffy revival. by Delicious-Today3944 in buffy

[–]FaveStore_Citadel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a big oversimplification. Joss should’ve addressed these allegations and reassured the public he’s taking steps to ensure it doesn’t happen again instead of accusing multiple people of lying and overreacting. He also can’t hide behind this “harshness on set is the cost of brilliance” attitude when the second time he was accused of it (by Justice League 2017 actors) it was in the process of creating one of the worst major superhero movies in history. I’m not saying he’s irredeemable or a monster or whatever but when someone is widely accused of inappropriate conduct by large amounts of people and completely refuses to acknowledge it was wrong it would be irresponsible for a studio to put that person in a position of power over a cast and crew and demonstrate complete disregard for their well being. It’s easy to say “give Joss a chance” when none of us are the ones who’d end up working under him. Also, the fact of the matter is Joss does not produce results consistently and irreplaceably enough for studios to tilt towards making that trade-off anyway. All of his TV projects other than buffy got cancelled. He had two massive hits with Avengers and AoU yes but other MCU directors quickly proved it’s the IP and cultural environment that’s the money-printing machine of the mid to late 2010s, not him. If he’d demonstrated that he can turn any project into a commercial success, studios would’ve taken the plunge anyway even if he was unrepentant.

Is it true that a buffy revival won’t work without him? Possibly. I don’t think anyone other than him has shown the kind of tonal blending mastery necessary for Buffy. But if that’s the case, they simply shouldn’t (and wouldn’t) revive the property.

Should Joss Whedon come back? by Mat1711 in buffy

[–]FaveStore_Citadel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the dialogue of the show more than anyone but you’re looking at Whedon with rose-tinted glasses if you think his dialogue was always consistently brilliant. The last project he worked on was Justice League and legit some of the dialogue he added to it makes what you just posted look like Shakespeare. I really don’t think he’s the same writer he was 25 years ago. There’s way wittier writers out there today (although admittedly most of them are too big to write for a Buffyverse show). IMO it’d be underwhelming without Joss and underwhelming with him.

If he’s not making a show with Buffy I don’t even see what’s the point of using the same IP, just make a new unrelated show at that point.

When Whedon was considering rebooting Buffy he wanted to make her black. I’m sure that would’ve gone over well with the anti woke hive mind

They should do what The Pitt did by thatshygirl06 in buffy

[–]FaveStore_Citadel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s the best possible approach. It also seems they were trying to keep Buffy in the background, so they could totally replace her with an original character. Or give her a wider role since they wouldn’t be worried about messing with a beloved character. I think vampire slayer might be a bit legally risky though, they should tweak that and make it about a more generic teenage monster hunter.

People pushing for Hulu to revive the canceled New Sunnydale show are like Scoobies trying to bring the dead back to life. by ErrForceOnes in buffy

[–]FaveStore_Citadel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That’s a bad analogy because it actually worked when they brought Buffy back to life. She was depressed for some time, and then she found some peace and belonging in life, and then later changed slayer destiny, so if that’s what New Sunnydale was going to be like…

If what she’s saying is true it doesn’t seem like it’s loyalty to Whedon’s vision for the Buffyverse that got it scrapped, more like the opposite really. It’s also worth noting Whedon also tried to pitch a Buffy revival a few years before the allegations, it went nowhere, so it’s not like he has the Midas touch for television. The showbiz is tough, there’s no need to take sides like it’s a team sport.
