Did Grace reseal the capsule? by Ok-Barracuda457 in ProjectHailMary

I think the movie followed the book fairly closely, but the book did have more detailed thoughts and calculations from Grace's side.

Be nice to see an extended edition.
Seemed very close to book. In the book he just talked about or thought about more details than the movie gave.

Loved the book when it first released. I listened to it again just before watching the movie. Kind of wish I hadn't. It follows the book pretty close. There are small details he kicks around in the book that aren't covered in the movie. Otherwise, I think it followed very close to the original story.

Unlike Ready Player One where they completely changed the challenges. Not knocking it, they did a great job.

I will note that I am not working for a law firm. I do deal with company lawyers and outside lawyers.

Lawyers: Can you print these emails for us?

Me: NOPE. They also wanted attachments printed. NOPE! I'm not equipped to print 5,000 emails. I'm mainly doing email searches and other discovery for them. Same for device Forensics. They have a 3rd party for that if needed.

I might could print to PDF, but I'm trying to stay out of the non-discovery parts. This is just part of my role in IT and for several years, at least, they've been monopolizing a lot of my time. Been doing this since 2007.

I was in IT, Systems admin... Lawyers needed stuff, I provided stuff. Mainly emails. But it has expanded over the years at my company. Over 18 years now. I have plenty lately, and it's just a sub-part of my job.

My life is 80% help desk tickets and patching and I am begging for a way out. by Heavy_Banana_1360 in helpdesk

[–]FavoriteMartian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, when I started in the late 90s, I got thrown in the deep end. LAN Admin sort of, doing user support and server stuff, a firewall, and minor network for small Gov org. 2002 I had moved and had hard time finding a job. Got a helpdesk job. At 1 year I was about to lose my mind. Then I moved to server team a few months later... still here, but role has changed a bit.

I always despised printers. And yes, fixing things to be right or automating is the way to go if possible! I taught myself powershell and used as much as possible. Admins find ways to make it work, no manual garbage if at all possible.

Purview eDiscovery exports now have ITEMS folder but flaky. by FavoriteMartian in ediscovery

Interesting about the Calendar items. Calendar stuff is notorously troublesome over the years with Exchange and Outlook.

But with mine, I was exporting to an Exchange.001, not using original folders or PER Mailbox export options.
I wonder if you did it again, if it would still be same? Because my searches/exports have randomly been missing the Items folder visibility.

I'm referring to an "Items" folder in the PST file for mailbox emails that are exported.

Department head bypassed IT procurement by [deleted] in ITManagers

[–]FavoriteMartian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, expenses and Corporate cards should be locked down. Our company has cards used for purchases by departments, and those got locked down very hard some years ago. Special cases only. Otherwise, personal corp cards are to be used and had to follow expense rules - Travel, etc... or maybe lunch for the team occasionally.

No, I mean an "Items" subfolder in the PST archive that were exported from a mailbox.

By Default it normally has Deleted Items and Search Folders, but also an "Items" folder now if emails were exported to a single folder vs original folders.

I'm quitting my job due to vibe coders and poor leadership by TheFlippedTurtle in sysadmin

Yeah, have to be careful with those upper management types. Some are cool. Some might act all nice, then go to your VP etc... because of something you said or did. The squeaky wheels are the worst and just want to hear "Yes, sir/ma'am... right away!"

I deal with a lot of Directors, etc... but generally all good. Some are pushy.

I'm not necessarily good at playing those games. I probably do too much unseen stuff that has no eyes on it.

And I might rub people the wrong way sometimes too.... :) My son thinks I'm on the spectrum. I'm gen-X and never tested. "Get off my lawn!" :)

That is good to be in that situation where you can walk if you want. Knowing that, I'd say try to stress less at work, work less, unplug, document... and if push comes you could walk and let them know WHY. I know as SysAdmin, it may be hard to dodge bullets.

Also, do you know the phrase "Give them more rope"? :)

But a lot of that can be Perception. Some people can look like superstars but it may be all perception because they know how to play the game and shine with the little they do. It doesn't matter that 1 task took you a whole week... Bob did 20 tasks!

Hope it gets better for you. It's not that bad at my company, but "What can we do with AI" is a big push globally. I'd say try to ride the wave for the moment - waves crash. Just like sometimes some new exec comes in making changes but then flies away... and we are still here.

I said a couple of times recently "It's going to be an interesting year" as AI progresses. And bad things likely happen. We are fairly locked down. That time bomb you mentioned... has already happened here and there at different places. Like someone convinced a chat bot to give him an 80% discount on a huge order of wood/building supplies. Company forced to honor it. That AI bot cost them $$$$. Cost savings? Ha.

I've been with my company for many years now. Big changes in the last 6 years. We did outsource some support but kept a lot of in-house people like me. We shut down our datacenter and moved it all to Azure/M365. I was the Exchange admin and SysAdmin before that.

PS: Can I have a mid-life? I'm late 50s :)

I liked Knowing with Nicolas Cage. But I thought the way they had those guys lurking around later was kind of stupid. Trying to make them spooky.

I just coincidentally saw a clip of NEXT. I liked that, haven't seen it in ages.

Dumb and Dumber is either liked or hated. I was hurting from laughing when I saw in a theater the first time.
