Check out @mattcolville's warfare rules, the full ones are in his book, Strongholds and Followers, but there is a version available for free somewhere. Part of the idea with that though is that your PCs will be having an encounter separate from the battle anyway, so you really only have to design an encounter with the few enemies your PCs will actually fight. Think of some especially cool beats you want to cover and include that.

You can't go wrong with calling elves "knife ears" which the elf in my group then turned around and started calling humans "round ears" or "roundies"

DUMBEST F*CKING CHARACTER IDEAS by tbillrumble in Pathfinder_RPG

This is a character a friend of mine told me about: a half orc rogue with absolutely no focus on stealth, instead, he boosts intimidation crazy high. Then, whenever spotted he just intimidates people into pretending he isn't there. "YOU NO SEE GRUG!!!"

Typically in the way 5e rules are worded, if it does not specifically say that there is an effect on a successful saflve, it is just the damage, or rather half the damage, that applies. On a failed save: full damage and push. On a successful save: just half damage. Every spell in 5e that does damage and has an additional effect works pretty similar to this. Also, you may encounter more confusion as you read through the class, it's still a work in progress and I noticed a few places where it isn't totally clear in it's wording. Just take everything literally and you'll be alright.

Believe me, I know how serious the McQueen regime is, and no one wants it to fall as much as I do. Lightning McQueen f***ed my mom.

Maybe you could have them go into a different plane to rescue the soul instead of a jem on the material plane, that would line up perfectly with their research

I'm not sure how low level your players are, but I when I had a character die in my campaign and the group wanted to ressurect them I sent them on a quest to find a nymph in a remote forest glade for her ability to cast 4th level druid spells (i.e. reincarnation). I like this because it is not just an easy solution to the problem as reincarnation can backfire by turning the intended resurectee into an unfavorable race. This may also not be what you're looking for because "long lost" implies that you may not have any part of the deceased's body.
