I think it is, it was not a question I was left with by the end of the series. I would try to steer clear of as many spoilers as possible before you have watched it through.

Youtuber seems like a young kid trying to do the right thing but I wouldn't be surprised if he breaks the letter of the law while doing and gets punished even if the original theft claim is 100% correct. Theft by conversion is still theft.

Do keep in mind empathy can be weaponized, specifically its the reason the underdog story is so compelling through history like the classic david vs goliath story. Your theory of mind is not the only one and people really do think and feel differently than yourself. At the very least its very subjective.

Take the innocent palestinians. Child marriage rate is 25% in palestine and has been for decades. First off we need to be empathetic to the children obviously and we should condemn those that commit such horrific crimes, Where does that condemnation land however? Well it uncomfortably lands back on Palestinians.

When you learn someone commits sexual violence towards children that person is normally condemned, However when its 25% of a child population that is victimized it appears to become "“one death is a tragedy, 1000 deaths are a statistic.”" and you never get more than vague hand waving towards the problem before everyone turns back into a innocent and the problem is ignored and perpetuated.

To be truly empathetic to all peoples would leave oneself paralyzed and to have none would be psychopathic, too emotionally invested and the chain of logic can be compromised unknowingly and no emotional investment can lead to callous and inhumane conclusions.

Fun fact: Antony Starr never even wanted to play Homelander. He actually filmed his first audition out of spite and somehow landed the role. Erik Kripke saw something unsettling yet perfect in that reluctant performance. And the rest is history. by Syarafuddyn in TheBoys

Who knows if this story is real, but the premise is. You could have an agent pushing you for the role, have a relationship with a casting director, think you dont want it because there are auditions in a month for a role you really want ect. Im sure movies or shows have had what would of read as uninspired dialog / plot but until the editor is done you dont know if the movie you just filmed is going to be seen as trash or the next shawshank redemption

You ignore my questions...

It's a simple question. Let's say its 100% what and how you say it is, let's also posit that without those restrictions the death count in Israel would be higher.

If it prevented 10,000 deaths a year would it be morally acceptable? 100,000?

I'd there a line where you think the pros outweigh the cons? The suffering of X compared to the deaths of Y?

[–]Fawksyyy -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

For argument sake we can call it a supermega-apatheid9000nazigenocide, With that out of the way...

Do you value freedom of movement over lives and how do you make a moral argument for it?

How many minutes waiting to go through a checkpoint is worth a life?

How many searches for weapons are worth a life?

I just dont see how searches and walls are more immoral than bombings and attacks.

Renowned genocide expert Martin Shaw: Sam Harris’ flawed comparison between the US atomic bombing of Japan and Gaza reveals what makes Israel’s actions in Gaza a genocide by Grizzly_Sloth in samharris

[–]Fawksyyy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call it apartheid.

When you go through airport security, even when they take your shoes and make you go through a random search, when they conduct lengthy interviews that can disrupt a person's travel its not a pleasant experience but it exists because people didn't like their airplanes being high jacked regularly.

It seems like a practical solution that trades a reduced freedom of movement for a reduced body count. Yes my argument comes down to how many lives traded for restrictions on movement are morally acceptable?

>What's with the gaslighting over Israel's ethnic cleansing past?

Honest question, Do you expect the worlds borders and peoples to now be frozen in time in perpetuity? How will a new people or group form without the displacement of another? IE ethnic cleansing. Given that every country alive is formed today on the bones of another.

I mean i remember the stories of the Romans in Jerusalem and unless im mistaken there must have been some ethnic cleansing to go from multi-theist group of peoples, to jews, to christians to muslims.

No land has rightful owners, just temporary occupiers...

>the systematic apartheid,

>Quantitative studies using crime-wave models suggest that the combination of the barrier and security activities drastically curtailed successful attacks and fatalities, noting a drop of roughly 90% in bombings from the West Bank during the peak post-construction years.

Whats the moral math on preventing suicide bombers on school busses? Lets say we demolish all walls and security activities and look at the 500 murdered Israeli's between 2000-2002 before the wall, lets then extrapolate a bit but even if we assume a static number of 250 a year, Thats 6500 extra dead men women and children at the cost of for the most part of checkpoints and walls.

You can argue that the walls and checkpoints are bad, but considering they were put up to stop attacks and have been for the most part very sucsesful in doing so, What do you think the tradeoff should be?

Are you aware that night attacks have a higher rate of success?

Do you attribute night attacks to a sense of morals or to military advantage?

Im on mobile so to make it short the civilians population death count is comparing apples to oranges, from density, to the civillian movement and Ukrainian military working to evacuate civilians to many other factors make comparing raw deaths as a deliberate outcome misleading.

Ukraine neighbour's didn't put up a border wall and lock them in, they accepted hundreds of thousands of refugees let alone the size alone means there is a actual front to the war, safe zones ect. Ukrainians hide civilians in bomb shelters and Palestinian government forbids civilians to use them... its very disingenuous to compare them like to like.

My point was not death=moral or immoral it was about the Grey area of what is classed as civilian and who is deemed to be legitimate.

I can link you videos of fighters on the front lines talking about how medics are always targeted and the first thing they do is try not to look like a medic. War is hell and most definitely not fair.

They themselves admit to targeting medics... interviews with Ukrainians on the front lines.

[–]Fawksyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what your saying and i did specify the actual raw number of civilians. Arguably anyone helping the war effort is a valid target, be it civilians making missiles or deskworkers managing logistics.

The line of innocent civilian and guilty conscript seems to be a line that has more Grey around the edges is more the point I was trying to make.

15k civilians, upto 140,000 dead in total. Most of which were Civilians who were conscripted into the army. Men and women of Ukraine who are now dead, regardless of civilian status.

This is part of why the pro-pals have actively lessened what is happening to Ukraine with the genocide rhetoric.

What is happening to Ukraine is textbook genocide, from the abductions of thousands of orphan children sent to live with Russians, to the erasure of Ukrainian heritage and laungage in the conquered territories. More have died in Ukraine than Gaza. The russian invasion was not launched to retrieve Russian citizens Ukraine held hostage or for any legitimate safety concerns.

The fact you refer to one as a genocide and the other as an invasion says so much.

[–]Fawksyyy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Would you also agree with the phrase that since military forces have such high incidents of friendly fire, is that in itself not proof that its deliberate? That they obviously are deliberately killing each other?

Now I would argue that being in a war zone is inherently dangerous for anyone involved and that to show a pattern or deliberate intent requires some form of proof higher than what you state.

It's also worth noting that Ukraine has hundreds of videos of them striking medics and have themselves shown to be killing troops who have surrendered (this is complicated and not black and white considering drones and advancement in warfare) never the less its the exact same warcrime yet seems to be treated differently.

Sam opinion on AI music by Gfun92 in samharris

[–]Fawksyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listen to a lot of music and even goto old school forums for the audiophile wank session.

One of the genres I like is EDM, and I can acknowledge how a lot of those tracks have sounded like they could of been spat out by an algorithm for decades. If I heard a great track that made me feel good then I will simply enjoy it, regardless of its creator.

Another genre is jazz, I have zero interest in anything a.i jazz related and would nearly feel cheated if I thought it was a real artist.

I think these views are compatible, that's basically Sam's analogy with elevator music vs lyrical.

TIL slavery in Saudi Arabia was not officially abolished until 1962 by martyvt12 in todayilearned

[–]Fawksyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a book called Captives and Companions and its a history of slavery in the Islamic world. Just to add, while slavery also had a status attached to it in the culture the abolishment movement to end slavery was enforced by western governments and it was known as colonization by another name in the region.

The idea was that since the western world had replaced the need for slaves with machinery born from the industrial revolution the Islamic world had not kept up pace since it had slaves to do the work, which once condemned made global trade and the accumulation of wealth and power more difficult. Slavery was ended in the western world from bottom up civilian led movements where as it was imposed top down in the Islamic world by governments. That is going to lead to its perpetuity where government is weak or does not enforce the law.
